In my work at EAA, it is clear that there is some confusion on exactly how BasicMed operates. I thought providing an overview of the process might be helpful. President's Message by Charlie Becker BasicMed is Here! Starting May 1, pilots now have the option of skipping the traditional third class medical and using BasicMed instead. Of course, most of the required items were approved just before the May 1 deadline but everything is now in place. I'm pleased to report that chapter member John Forster has completed the process so it can be done! BasicMed came about through a prolonged effort by EAA and AOPA to get some relief from the burdensome requirements of the 3rd class medical. Like many pilots, I personally believe the 3rd class medical should have been completely eliminated, as there is no proof that it actually does anything to improve safety. However it does "sound like a good idea" to the policymakers and has the backing of powerful political interests so the reality is that it will not be eliminated at this time. The truth is we didn't end up with all we wanted but we did get all we could. Before taking advantage of BasicMed, you must:: Have held a third-class medical certificate or special issuance on or after July 15, New pilots and pilots who fall outside the above window must obtain a one-time thirdclass medical certificate or special issuance before flying under BasicMed. Visit any state-licensed doctor and have them review and sign the FAA's Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC) during the visit. Retain the CMEC in your records. Take one of the online medical self-assessment courses provided by AOPA or Mayo Clinic. AOPA s online medical selfassessment course is approved and available. Mayo is still developing their course. Retain proof of completion. Retain the CMEC course certificate and CMEC checklist in your logbook and go fly! Going forward, the doctor visit is good for 4 years and the course is good for two years. There is much more to BasicMed than the above requirements. Pilots who wish to start flying under BasicMed on May 1 may want to read FAA Advisory Circular 68-1 and EAA s BasicMed FAQs, or visit EAA's Page 2

BasicMed Resource Center. If you have any questions, please EAA us at Don't forget that there are alternatives to BasicMed. Ultralight and glider pilots have no medical requirements. Sport pilots need only a valid state drivers license. But if you want to fly your traditional GA aircraft, BasicMed may be your best option. An item on EAA's advocacy agenda with the FAA is revisiting the definition of light sport aircraft. If they can get that one done, it would not only provide an even better medical option for pilots of two place aircraft but help get some more capable, newly manufactured aircraft for sale at a lower price point. EAA has doing great advocacy work getting the FAA to adopt meaningful reforms like BasicMed and their Dynon STC, so I really believe it will happen. (It just won't happen fast; nothing in government ever does). Tailwinds, Charlie Page 4

Pancake Breakfast/YE Rally From Chapter Treasurer, Fred Stadler: Another great chapter event, with lots of support from our members! Great weather brought lots of airplanes, many happy Young Eagles, increased public awareness of the airport, and ample opportunity for aviation conversations. While those were the highlights, our chapter treasury made out well, too, growing by more than $2,200. A detailed spreadsheet of the financials is attached. Jane recorded 345 paid adult meals, 63 children s meals, and eleven free meals. Generous donations from our primary vendors (Perkins and Kwik Trip) helped keep the food costs low. As in prior events, the total expense of the big ticket food items (pancake batter, eggs, and sausages) was actually less than the cost of incidentals (orange juice, coffee, paper products, ice, milk, propane, etc.). Perhaps most important is that the attendees seemed happy, so we have a market for future events, too. Special thanks to Dan Johnson for stepping up to the challenge of managing this complex event. It all worked well and now it s a wrap! Many thanks to our volunteers: Dennis Moehn, Jim Jones, Wayne Daniels, Kirby Scott, Tracy Noack, Doug Milius, Jim Hiendl, Sam Senderlin, Don Maki, Charlie Becker, Lon Nanke, Fred Stadler, Jane Smith, Al Follendorf, Mike Butler, Kurt Weina, Jim Sreblow, Mike Stopar, Mike Butler, Wes Koplitz, Jim Eagan, and Doc Mosher. Apologies to anyone who was inadvertently omitted from this list. Our event is a success because of all of our Photos courtesy of Kirby Scott. Page 12

Young Eagle RallyVolunteers Thanks to chapter member, Chuck Pazdzioch, who stepped in for Eric Abraham and Kyle Voltz who were both at Sun N Fun. Chuck did a great job of running the event. Other volunteers included Carrie Forster, John Forster, Amber Johnson, and Nicole Brown as ground crew; Jim Casper parking airplenes, and volunteer pilots Elaine Kauh, Curt Carter, Gary Geisler, Galen Killan, Jim Janes, Mike Spurlock, Doug Milius, Hal Bryan, and Steve Benesh. 14 - My Aviation Journey - A chronicle of my aviation experiences from first flight, to obtaining my license and beyond! Building More Solo Time Story and photos by Serena Kamps Though I'd been hoping to fly my first solo cross-country today perhaps and had prepared myself for this, when I arrived at the airport Joe told me that between the cold temperatures, low ceilings and snow showers, he didn't think it would be the best day to make such a flight both for my sake and for the Cub's. He did, however, deem it a good enough day for solo pattern work. The wind was low and practically straight down 29. While Joe warmed the engine, using the engine heater, I preflighted the plane. Joe pushed it out of the hangar and I climbed in and closed the door. Today, for the first time, I would be doing everything from start-up to shutdown on my own. After getting everything in the cockpit situated and in order (important when you're flying solo), I mentally went through the start-up procedures in my mind as my hands performed the steps and the engine roared to life. A look at the instruments showed everything reading the way it was supposed to so I taxied out to the end of the runway. There, I went through the pre-takeoff checklist and, taxiing onto the runway, was set to go. Remembering Joe's admonition just before I'd left to make sure not to advance the throttle too abruptly because of a tendency these engines have to choke and cough and sometimes Turning downwind for Runway 29 even quit when the throttle is pushed forward too quickly in cold temperatures, I made sure to add the power smoothly and gently so the engine wouldn't gulp in too much cold air and was airborne in seconds. I noticed at once the improved engine performance due to the cooler temperature. The climb rate was excellent. It seems that it takes me once around the pattern to sort of re-acquaint myself with things so on my first approach I found myself coming in way too high. Although I might have been able to get it down to the runway safely, since I didn't like the look of things, I simply decided to abandon the approach and go around. Joe had reminded me before I left that this is a perfectly viable option. My next approach was much better and I made a gorgeous three pointer on the grass. Beautiful! I noticed on this flight that it actually seems almost Despite the gray day, there was still a gorgeous sunset that evening. The red sky seems indicative of better weather to come. Perhaps I'll be able to fly my solo cross-country soon! Page 14

easier to land without the extra weight of someone in the front seat. The plane is just lighter and feels easier to control. I made three more fairly decent landings on the grass, then decided that since I was doing fine with those, I would try a couple on the pavement. So next time around, I lined myself up with hard surface 29 and made a landing, admittedly not quite as smooth as those on the grass had been, but I was down safely. After trying one more of those, I decided to try a couple crosswind landings on runway 36. Joe had told me I could try this if I felt comfortable enough. The wind was not blowing too strongly so I figured it would be a good day to try a few solo even though it was a direct crosswind. I entered a new pattern and started my approach. Left stick, right rudder, all the way to the runway and I was down. Whew! I took off again, made one more trip around the pattern, one more crosswind landing and decided to call it a day. Those crosswind landings can still be a little more exciting than I like! I guess that just means I need to work on them more. But it had been almost an hour anyway. So with eight new solo landings to my credit, I taxied back to the hangar, cut the engine and climbed out. I was rather stiff with the cold and back in the warm office I made my first entry in my logbook with a hand still numb but I was excited to have made another successful solo flight and to add another 0.9 hours to my solo flight time. Blue skies and tailwinds! Serena (EAA Lifetime # ) is a Chapter 252 member, EAA employee, Private Pilot with tailwheel endorsement, and accomplished harpist. Serena lives near Pickett, WI. Page 15

EAA Leadership Academy written by Carrie Forster, Newsletter Editor and Vice-President Attending the EAA Chapter Leaders Academy April gave me a new appreciation for our chapter and all the great things we're doing, as well as giving me insight about how to continue to make our chapter stronger. Chapter Secretary, Kurt Weina, and I had the good fortune to be part of the recent leadership class, spending the weekend at the Air Academy Lodge with workshops during the day in the Vette Theatre. Friday evening, attendess were given a personal tour of Sonex by John Monnett, and Saturday evening we had a behind the ropes tour of the Museum, led by Kyle Voltz. During the day, Charlie Becker, Kyle Voltz, and David Leiting led our group through many aspects of chapters. Attendees came from Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, Minnesota, Michigan, Georgia, Florida, Alaska, and even South Africa. More than once I heard comments about our chapter being on "hallowed ground." It really gave me an appreciation of the many resources and opportunities we have being here in Oshkosh. It was a really informative weekend and Kurt and I met and made connections with chapter leaders from all over. The two things that stuck with me the most is Paul Poberezny's quote that chapter are the "churches of aviation" and also Charlie's comments about living "aviation as a lifestyle." I know that for me, personally, my aviation life and my abilities as a pilot are enhanced by my membership in our chapter and by all of the people I've met and relationships I've formed. I hope that I can bring the things I learned to make me a better chapter officer in service of our chapter. Thanks to Charlie, Kyle, David, Serena, and the other EAA staffers who spent their weekend helping all of us, especially Charlie, David, and Kyle who were with us all from early morning until evening.
