5 TAG Fll-Cve-in 09 By Terry MClnthn WNS hs ertinly put mper on ving in the Virginis over the pst yer. Gs pries re reeping up gin, mking trips to TAG, Kentuky, n Inin hr on the wllet. Our ving options re not s vrie s they were just few short yers go. I hve lot of ol friens in TAG with whom I selom get the hne to ve nymore, so for the pst severl yers I ve me speil effort to tten the TAG-Fll-Cve-In to soilize n, of ourse, keep n eye out for ny new hunre foot pits. This yer two things ttrte my ttention. I lerne tht smll group of vers unknown to me h foun new hunre footer in Georgi ve lle Slot Rok. I h lso een informe tht trips were resuming in one populr Tennessee multi-rop lle Deep Thrust whih h een lose for quite while. Deep Thrust, I knew, ontine 147 pit, n the pit in Slot Rok h not een tpe yet, ut ws thought to e well in exess of 100 feet eep. The lure of two new-tome hunre footers sent me on the 600 mile junt own the interstte with high expettions. I pike up To in Winhester n we foun ourselves just north of Chttnoog t roun 5 AM on the Stury morning of the Cve-in. We h een riving through spori ownpours ll night. Although the weeken forest ws for lering, I knew the re roun northwest Georgi h reeive etween inhes of rin in the pst two weeks, so I figure wter levels in the ves woul e high. Slot Rok is lote just north of Trenton, G., smll town only out 20 minutes from the Cve-in site. I h me rrngements to meet some of my TAG friens who h not een to either of our trget ves. Mrty Aerromie, who ws one of the isoverers, took us to the lnowner s house, introue us, n seure permission. The ve is short, wet, four pit multi-rop whih hs een known for over two ees. The lst rop ws prt wy own muh higher ome.

This le them to the top of the high ome. There were no nturl rig points roun the top of the ome so they snke long rope through the rwl. Of ourse there were lot of ru points. They estimte the pit to e out 130 eep. They requeste tht if I went there, woul I set some olts for sfer rig n tpe the rop. Exept for the originl isovery rew, Mrty tol us no other vers h s yet one the new hunre footer. The entrne onsiste of flute 50 pit with two pssges leing from the ottom. Mnuel n I went into rwl to try to lote the top of the hunre footer. Too soon we me to shllower pit whih we relize ws the seon pith in the originl multi-rop route. By the time we ktrke, Brin h foun the orret route. At one point this rwl pinhe into higher tighter 6 onstrition whih h stoppe explorers of the erly 80 s. Following Mrty s iretions, we squeeze into this. It remine snug for nother forty feet to where it pinhe gin. A short nyon trverse eyon the seon pinh le to our ojetive. The top of the ome ws only out four feet ross, ut short istne own the pit elle out. I set two olts on opposite wlls for Y-hng rig own the enter. A rok rop from here inite free rppel, n this turne out to e the se. Most of the top prt of the pit ws niely sulpture n verge out ten feet in imeter. Aout 50 feet from the ottom wterfll entere from the fourth pit of the multi-rop route. The rope hung only ouple of feet from the flls ut you rely got wet t ll. It me for very seni rppel n lim. The pit lso enlrge in this re to out twenty feet in imeter. We tpe the ome t 129. The Georgi hunre foot list is not extensive, in ft, over hlf the totl hunre footers re in Ellisons Cve lone. Well, now there is one more to to the list n it s pretty nie. The rwlwy getting to it ws little muy on this prtiulr y, ut ll in ll not relly tht. We exite Slot Rok, took quik tour of nery ve lle Rnge Pot, with one short rop, n rove over to the TAG Fll-Cve-in with ylight to spre. Some woul sy I m getting soft in my ol ge. Suny morning we hee over to Deep Thrust in Tennessee, whih is out n hour n hlf rive from the Cve-in. Deep Thrust ws populr pull-own trip uring the 80 s. The 147 terminl pit is ome whih rops own right esie the gping tunnels of n tive unergroun limestone qurry. After while the ompny eme onerne with vers exiting vi the qurry n shut own ess. It ws on my to-o list erly on, ut efore I oul t the ve ws lose, n so it remine for quite few yers. I reently lerne through Atlnt ver Any Zellner tht n greement h een me etween vers n the qurry llowing ess to the ve. The stipultion eing vers oul go s fr s the lst pit, ut h to exit through the ve without interfering with qurry opertions, in other wors no more pullowns.

7 We h the sme rew s the y efore with the ition of three Inin vers, Joe Kiner, Drrin Chpmn, n Anrew Kenney. We took four ropes for the three rops n one triky limown whih Any Z. wrne me woul e iffiult to sen for shorter folk. We were lso tol tht reent hevy rins oul mke for some wet pits. The ve entrne is the usul TAG 400 vertil gin up the mountin. There ws smll strem entering the ve opening in the ottom of smll, steep sie sink. Just insie short rwl le to the first rop. It soune little more thn just rippy. The 74 pit splits t the hlfwy point into wet route n rier route. We hose the ltter. Beyon this 100 wet rwl les to the next pit. The rwl is normlly grvel with just few pools, ut on this y it ws fst moving strem out four inhes eep, with severl eeper setions. There were lso ouple of low spots neessitting goo full oy soking. I ws gl I hose my PVC suit. Mnuel n Brin h gone he with the ig rope. I followe. At the en of the rwl ws very wet 25 footer. Brin wite for Me, To, n our Inin ompnions. I took the ig rope from Brin n went in serh of Mnuel who ws route fining using notes furnishe y Aln Cressler. At twelve foot limown, the one Any h wrne us out; I met Mnuel returning from his souting trip. I lime own the rop, ut the lst six feet ws unerut n the wter ws pretty hevy. I knew Brin h short rope to rig this for our sent. I informe Mnuel tht Brin ws witing t the ottom of the lst pit for everyone to th up. I tol him I thought it might e while. In ft I ws wonering if the Inin fellows, two of whom were it on the hevy sie, woul mke it through the low spots in the strem rwl. Before returning to fin me, Mnuel h een leving irns t vrious juntions. He h stoppe t spot where the route ws getting hr to follow. Together Mnuel n I eie to ontinue our serh for the ig pit, tking the rope with us. Muh of the ve t this mile level ws srmling orehole. There ws one rekown re whih use us some hesittion. Mnuel thought it est to wit here for the others. I followe wht ppere to e the most trvele route through the rekown n went on he to fin the lst pit. Shortly fter the rekown mze, the ve opene up into lrge well eorte setion of 7 orehole. At ouple of spots the orehole expne into moerte size hmers fille with sing flowstones, olumns, n stlgmites/stltites. Very nie. The orehole terminte in finl hmer with smll, steeply ownsloping rwlwy t its fr en. Air ws lsting out of this, so I sli own into fissure pssge whih ontinue ngling ownwr. I figure the 147 h to e nery. A ownlim le to short pop-through followe y nother short ownlim. Beyon this ekone gping lkness. I ssesse the rigging options n then returne to see if the others h ught up with Mnuel. I met everyone out hlfwy long the route I h just soloe. I ws orret in my ssumption tht the Inin fellows might e unte y the strem rwl ner the entrne. Two of the three h turne roun. Tht left six of us. It in t tke long to rig the ig rop. It ws lrge volume pit perhps fifty feet in imeter, some smll leges interrupte the rop, preventing free rppel, ut it ws still quite n impressive pit. There were just enough rippies to keep you oole own on the lim. We ll enjoye ouning the pit. It ws pretty ool seeing the ig lit qurry tunnels just off to the sie. 8 Photo-oumenttion Trip to Hellhole Cve, WV From NSS We pge On Stury, 2/20/10, joint West Virgini Deprtment of Nturl Resoures, U.S. Fish n Willife, n NSS projet i photogrphi oumenttion n t popultion survey trip into Hellhole Cve, West Virgini. This projet me together very quikly over the pst 3-4 weeks, one flying ts were oserve outsie the ve. While witing lortory onfirmtion of WNS in ouple of Little Brown ts, orgniztion move forwr on severl fronts. I ws ske to orgnize ve/t photogrphers from roun the ountry n get offiil NSS Projet sttus, while logistis were orgnize in terms of equipment, trvel, n permits n wivers. Fifteen people on three ifferent rews went in to oument three seprte res of the ve. Eh rew h guies from the Germny Vlley Krst Survey, iologist, n photogrphi rews. The jos were to photogrph everything, ount n oserve ts, reple temperture n humiity t loggers, n remove n pproprite numer of t rsses, if ny. We were le to onnet with n inlue Ntionl Geogrphi photogrpher n ssistnt, who re working on WNS story for future issue. Hellhole is only one of the sites they hve visite. For ontext, Hellhole is West Virgini's lrgest t hiernulum. The lst survey (2007) showe over 112,000 ts. The mjority re Little Browns, ut some 4-5% of the known Inin ts live here, n over 6,000 Virgini Big Ers - out 45% of the entire known popultion on the plnet. The lst two speies re feerlly liste s enngere. The news: upon rriving t the sinkhole entrne, plenty of ts were reily oserve exiting the ve n flying outsie. Mny flew off into the istne to ertin eth, given the sene of foo supply this time of yer. Others were seen lning n "wing-wlking" on the snow. In the entrne room ( 160 foot rop into huge ell hmer), ts were everywhere - flying, on the wlls, n the floor littere with rsses. Virtully ll were Little Browns. From one 15- meter squre smple re, gllon-size Ziplo g ws fille with e ts. The rest of the floor ws the sme. For ontext, the 2007 survey oserve only one t in the entrne room. At the ifferent Little Brown roosting sites, WNS ws in ler eviene, n rsses foun long the wy. In the eepest reesses of LBB roosts, lesser mounts of the fungus were evient, implying tht ts h move to the entrne re, onsistent with ehviors oserve in northern sites. The Inin lusters lso showe WNS - rnging from reporte 12% to 50%. An oserver who h NY sites to ompre si it looke like wht they h seen in yer one of n infesttion. For omprison, the t from the northestern sites ffete for severl yers hs shown tht the Inin mortlity numers re in the 50% rnge, s ompre with the Little Browns well into the 90% rnge. The goo news: No eviene of WNS ws seen in the Virgini Big Ers. This ws extremely enourging, s their roosts re lote in ples long the routes where the other infete speies pss. Some pre-trip speultion h hope tht things might e ifferent with this speies. Why 1. It's ifferent speies; 2. They roost in very ry res (70% humiity s onfirme y t loggers); 3. They roost in very ol res - roun 32 egrees F, inluing osionlly elow (gin, temperture loggers t the sites hve shown this onsistently); 4. They rouse quikly, whih my inite they on't nee to urn the sort of ft reserves other speies o in orer to mount n immune response. All of these things will nee to stuie n nlyze, of ourse, ut, for now, the news is very goo. Let's hope it stys tht wy. A ution: we've seen WNS progress very slowing in other how-humiity sites, ut not e stoppe, so we'll nee to see tht the VBEs ontinue to remin untouhe over few yers. This is just one site, n one oservtion, ut it's lerly highly signifint one. The work of ompiling ll the thousns of photogrphs tken, the omprison of the tritionl liker n luster ensity methos of ounting to the new photogrphi methos, n the nlysis of the t logger t, will tke while, so more omplete report will ome lter. Not only is there the ehin the sene work of ln owner o-orintion, loging n knowing where the entrne is lote, there is knowing or seleting the route through the ve, keeping the group together n mking sure everyone sfely returns.

10 This group ws me up of ouple 60 yer ols, ouple, 50 yer ols, n few others who enjoy slower mesure pe where you n enjoy the ve. Even the younger ones ppreite group tht stys together n oesn t leve the slower ones ehin. Tht is the wy I ve, n tht is the wy I le my trips. I pike the Flk-Hnley Turnpike s the ojetive euse it is hr to explin it to someone who hs not een there. It is smll 18 inh wie lege, long the wll tht strts out with 40 foot rop, n 20 feet lter ens up sloping wy to nothing when the floor is only 3 feet wy. It is lote in winow where you n see he ig lk voi of the Flk Room, n no wy own exept ross the lege. When we rrive, n I sw the lege for the first time in 14 yers, I tully foun it hr to elieve tht I h one rwle ross it! The seon time I ws here we rigge rope n rppelle the rop. The 3 hours I h llowe to get to the turnpike ws just out right. The frequent mp heks, plement of few key tril mrker refletors, n ouple photo-shoot set ups y Aln got us there right on sheule. Aln spent plenty of time setting up shots in the huge Hnley Room. I think he got little upset when I kept enourging him to wrp it up. There ws etour he wnte to show us on the wy out, n if we were going to meet the exit time we h nnoune to the fmily where we prke the vehiles n to our hosts t the WVACS fiel house, we h to move out. Route-fining went well. We i get little split up in the Flt Room whih is one of the wys into the Lipps Mze. I knew we weren t on the tril we ome in on, ut Aln ws he n feeling his wy through. I knew there ws more thn one wy out, ut I in t wnt to get split up in the mze. Jonthn gree n we stoppe, lle Aln n his group k, reunite the group, foun our mrker n the proeee out together. Tht s just the wy I (n FCG) o it. Just to emphsis this, the vers in the le misse turn fter going through the Breezewy, n misse the onnetion to the Tresure Pssge. This ws where Aln wnte to show us relly pretty setion. Their wy ws A wy out, ut it wsn t the right wy out.
