The fll turkey seson ws 30 dys in length (October 3- November 1) nd llowed for n unlimited number of hunters to tke one wild turkey of either sex in one of 12 pre-selected permit res ( , Figure 1). Permits for rchery nd youth hunters were vlid sttewide (i.e., no restrictions on permit re). Although significnt chnges were mde to the spring turkey seson structure in 2016, there were no mjor chnges for the 2017 seson. The spring turkey seson ws 49 dys in length (12 April 30 My) nd llowed hunters to tke one berded wild turkey (tom, jke, or berded hen). The spring turkey seson ws divided into six time periods with permits vlid during specified time period (A-F) nd permit re ( ; Figure 1). A restricted number of permits were vilble through lottery system in ech permit re during time periods A nd B (A: April 12-18, nd B: April 19-25). Permits not sold during the lottery process were vilble for over-the-counter surplus sles. Permits for the remining time periods (C: April 26 My 2, D: My 3-9, E: My 10-16, F: My 17-30) were vilble over-thecounter in unlimited quntities in ech permit re. Hunters possessing permit unfilled during time periods A-E were permitted to hunt during the finl time period (F) in their respective permit re. Permits for rchery nd youth hunters were vlid the entire seson nd sttewide (i.e., no time period or permit re restrictions). Fll 2016 Seson Permits Issued Permits issued to hunters incresed slightly from 8,210 permits in 2015 to 8,562 in 2016 (Tble 1, Figure 2). Youth permit sles ccounted for 23.4% of totl license sles during the fll 2016 seson which incresed from 14.5% in fll This my reflect recent regultion chnges which permit youth to hunt sttewide (i.e., no permit re restrictions). 2 Hrvest There were 1,111 hrvested turkeys registered during the fll 2016 seson which ws 1% decrese from 2015 (Tble 1). Hunter success rtes declined slightly (-0.7%) to 13.0% in 2016 from 2015 nd remined below the 5-yer verge (13.9%). The gretest number of permits were issued in permit res 507 nd 508 nd this effort ws reflected in hrvest with these two permit res lso registering the highest hrvest numbers (Tble 2). Sttewide, femles represented 54.4% of the totl hrvest while juvenile mles (jkes) nd mture mles (toms) represented 15.7% nd 30.0% of the totl hrvest respectively (Tble 2). Spring 2017 Seson Permits Issued There were 49,919 permits issued during the spring 2017 seson, including 10,324 generl lottery nd lndowner permits, 11,355 youth permits, 11,249 rchery permits, nd 16,991 surplus over-the-counter permits (Tble 3). The totl number of permits purchsed remined reltively stedy (<1% decrese) in 2017 (Tble 4). Youth permit sles composed 22.7% of totl permit sles in 2017, slight decrese (<1%) from 2016 (Tble 4). Archery permits ccounted for 22.5% of totl permit sles (Tble 3). Archery permits issued incresed 8.8% in 2017 (Tble 4); this follows 105% increse in spring 2016 fter regultion chnges expnded opportunity, llowing rchery hunters to hunt sttewide during ny time period. Purchse of lottery permits declined by 8.9% from 2016, continuing declining trend wheres purchse of surplus gun permits remined stedy in Hrvest Hunters registered 11,854 turkeys (Tbles 3, 4, 5, & 7), which ws bove the 5-yer verge (11,548 turkeys, Figure 3) nd the best consecutive 5-yer hrvest verge (11,610 turkeys during the sesons). Although hrvest remined the highest in the core turkey rnge in permit res 507 (3,098 turkeys) nd 501 (2,622 turkeys), hrvest in permit re 508 (1,632 turkeys) surpssed 503 (1,373 turkeys) for the first time. Youth hrvest (2,168 turkeys) declined 3.5% from 2016 wheres rchery hrvest (1,665 turkeys) incresed 12% from 2016 (Tble 3). The winter of ws gin mild, nd likely ws not significnt fctor beyond norml winter mortlity for turkeys. Spring wether ws vrible, but generlly wrm nd spring green-up ws erlier thn norml.
