While results re not conclusive, they indicte protein content my be incresed by pplying split ppliction of nitrogen t topdress nd t lter growth stge (between flg lef emergence nd heding). Objective To determine how protein content in whet my be incresed with the timing of dditionl nitrogen pplictions. Mterils nd Methods The tril ws locted in field ner Brndon, TX. Four tretments, including the untreted check, were mde in rndomized block design with four replictions. Plots were 10 ft. wide by 20 ft. deep. In the fll prior to tril pplictions, the producer pplied # s of fertilizer per cre with dditionl zinc nd mgnesium. The four dditionl nitrogen tretments were: 1) untreted check (no dditionl N pplied in the spring); 2) 50 lbs of N t topdress; 3) split ppliction of 25 lbs. of N t topdress nd 25 lbs. of N t heding; nd 4) split ppliction of 25 lbs. of N t topdress nd 50 lbs. of N t heding. The tril ws hrvested on June 4, Plots were mchine hrvested using Wintersteiger plot combine. The seed ws then tken bck to the lb nd processed using Scout Pro Ohus scle nd Dickey John GAC 1500 moisture meter. Percent moisture levels were djusted to 13% moisture. Results nd Discussion The djusted yields, test weights, nd % protein for ech tretment with the ccompnying sttisticl nlysis re displyed in the following tble nd grph. The highest yield in the tril, 62.6 bu/c, occurred with the 50 lbs. of N t topdress ppliction. The two split N pplictions hd lower yields, but sttisticlly higher protein content thn the 50 lb N t topdress. 52

3 Conclusions The results from this study re not conclusive enough to offer chnge in best mngement prctices. Currently, producers commonly pply dditionl N to their whet in lte winter topdress ppliction. Dt indictes tht this topdress ppliction is the most efficient in terms of mximizing both yield nd protein. Moreover, if producer ws inclined, the dt does show lter N ppliction (sometime between flg lef emergence to heding) could increse the % protein of the grin. However, results from this study lso indicte splitting the spring nitrogen ppliction t topdress nd t heding my led to sttisticlly lower yield thn single topdress ppliction. For this prctice to be economiclly beneficil to the producer, protein premiums would hve to outweigh the reduced income from lower yields.
