1 Downs Rugby ROUND-UP September 2011 Welcome Downs Rugby supporters to the latest installment of our regular newsletter. Firstly how can we not mention how the mighty Wallabies are going after their against the odds victory at the Rugby World Cup. From all reports it may have been a lucky escape but there is no denying that they still played well enough to beat the powerful Springbok side. Now for the real test against the game s biggest and best - The Kiwis!. Bring it on. A huge well done to the team of volunteers who brought the recent Queensland Junior Rugby Union State Championships to life - You know who you are. This small group of rugby people were a tower of strength and the State Champs simply would not have happened without you. We are forever grateful. This is technically the off season but you would find it hard to believe with the amount still happening on the local front. Please enjoy the read and you will appreciate what we mean. Downs Rugby players enjoying the State Championships QLD JUNIOR RUGBY STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ND SEPTEMBER 2011 The State Championships were held at Downlands College from Tuesday 20 th Thursday 22 nd September. We had players from across Queensland, Victoria (Under 14), Northern Territory (Under 14), PNG (Under 17). With the venue looking fantastic and the weather on our side, the Championships were held in near perfect conditions. September 2011 Page 1
2 All games were played with spirit and enthusiasm which ensured the quality of the rugby played was of exceptionally high standards. Ball Boys at State Championships We were very fortunate to have had the support of a lot of our local clubs and businesses in lending us equipment needed for the event shade structures, ropes, poles, post pads etc. Thank you we appreciated your support. We also had a trusty band of volunteers to assisted over the three days again, without our Volunteers, the event wouldn t have been as successful as it was. Volunteer roles included Ball boys/girls, field marshalls, infrastructure management, equipment installers, results coordination. A huge thank you to all those involved. You certainly made the Championships the success that they were. To all the local businesses that contributed by way of sponsorship or inkind support Thank you!!!. We had great privilege in promoting all the businesses that supported Downs Rugby in their hosting and it was great to be able to acknowledge everyone during the course of the event. STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS SPIRIT OF RUGBY AWARD - This year we re-issued the Spirit of Rugby Award. This award is for the region that performs as well off the field as on, they play in the spirit of the game, they assist all officials as required and overall all; members of that region, participate in a truly admirable manner. This year the award was given to Rugby Gold Coast. CITY-COUNTRY GAMES SATURDAY 24 TH SEPTEMBER In the Under 15, 16 and 17 age groups, selections were made during the course of the Championships for places in both City and Country teams. Players selected into these teams moved into Downlands Boarding Houses for two additional nights camp and participated in the City/Country games on Saturday. Congratulations go to the following players for being selected into the Country teams:- Under 15 - Matthew Chong-nee, Damien Vagg and James McColl; Under 16 - Tim Manns and Dom Watt Under 17 - Ben Hyne, Lochlan Penberthy, Jack Cook and Matthew George Receiving the Spirit of Rugby Award (Left to Right) Ken Greedy of QJRU, Ralf Del a Mer of Rugby Gold Coast and Peter Taylor, September 2011 Mayor of Toowoomba Page 2
3 City and Country teams come together Following the City/Country games, James McColl (Under 15), Tim Manns (Under 16) and Lochlan Penberthy (Under 17) were selected into the respective Qld Teams. Please see the full article published in The Chronicle on our website. SENIOR REPRESENTATIVE COACH NAMED: We are delighted to announce that Andrew Skipper has accepted the position as Head Coach of the Darling Downs Senior Representative team in Andrew has a wealth of experience and we are very fortunate to have someone of his calibre involved with us. By way of example, for the past nine years Andrew has worked in professional coaching and rugby development positions in the United Kingdom. This included positions as a Youth Development Officer (YDO), Director of Rugby at St Joseph s College, Ipswich and, more recently, Club and Coach Officer with the Rugby Football Union (RFU) and assistant coach at Cambridge RUFC. Andrew Skipper Andrew possesses a Level Two Coach Accreditation with the Australian Rugby Union and a Level Three Coach Accreditation with the England Rugby Football Union (RFU). Andrew also undertook the role of RFU Coach Educator and Mentor in his time in the UK. Andrew also has an impressive playing record including captaining Queensland Subbies in 2000 and 2001 and representing the Australian Army Core (RAEME) team and South Queensland Army team whilst serving in the military. Andrew presently resides in Warwick where he teaches at TAFE and is studying secondary school teaching part time. This is great for Downs Rugby as Andrew will be able to leverage off all the tremendous work that Evan Willis has done over the last two years in the role. There is also some great talent to work with given the good number of Downs players who represented South Queensland and Country teams in 2011 which will be combined with the unearthing of new talent from the Finals series this year. 4 FROM THE OFFICE Well the season might be over for 2011, but we have started the season review and planning meetings in relation to all competitions for All Committees have now set their dates for the relevant Committee meetings which will enable this process to commence. We will endeavour to ensure that the competitions we have, meet the requirements of all our members. Thank you to all those who supported our raffle of the James Horwill signed jersey The raffle was won by a Gold Coast Family. DEVELOPMENT OFFICER REPORT Australian Schoolboys Over the weekend the Australian Schoolboy Squad competed in the annual Novotel Trans Tasman Trophy against our biggest rivals the New Zealand Schoolboys. The Australian Schoolboys squad, captained by Queensland representative Curtis Browning dug deep to earn a memorable victory against the New Zealand Schoolboys squad The Australian team ran in 3 tries to 1 on their way to regaining the trophy which has been in the hands of the kiwis for the past two years. Southern Downs Schoolboy 7 s Over the next 3 weeks schools from the Southern Downs will be participating in a Rugby 7 s competition at Risdon Oval, Warwick. This is to coincide with the announcement of the Gold Coast as the new venue for the IRB World Sevens Series. Interest is high in this format of Rugby with the high intensity and pace of the game appealing to a lot of new participants. Below is the ladder of the Southern Downs 7 s competition after week 1. Team Win Loss Draw F/A Warwick SHS Stanthorpe SHS Assumption College Try Sevens Week - QRU Media Release With Queensland playing host as the new home of Sevens Rugby, kids across the state are being encouraged to Try Sevens as part of the week-long Festival of Rugby celebrations in November. Try Sevens is a school program designed to encourage boys and girls to be active and to have fun in a safe and enjoyable environment while introducing youngsters to Sevens and encouraging them to set sights on going all the way to the top - possibly in their own backyard. Going all the way to the top for boys could be representing Australia at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018, while boys and girls will be eligible to represent Australia in Rugby Sevens at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Queensland Reds flanker and Sevens Commonwealth Games silver medallist Liam Gill has encouraged schools to get involved, endorsing Sevens as a fast and fun Super sport for everyone. The opportunity to represent Australia in Sevens at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi was a great honour, Gill said. Sevens is such a fast and exciting game to play, I m sure it will appeal to many of the kids who take part in the Try Sevens program. September 2011 Page 4
