2013 JUNIOR COMPETITION NEWS Under 6 to Under 12 Saturday 31 st August saw the junior competition come to an end with the Dalby Closing Carnival bringing together all the Junior Clubs in the Downs for the final fixtures of the season. The carnival promoted the Positive or its Pointless campaign which aims to reduce poor and unacceptable player, spectator and parent behaviour. The basic principles reinforced through Positive or it s pointless are: Offer positive comments to players, coaches and other spectators Applaud the efforts of match officials, players and coaches Focus on a child s efforts and selfesteem rather than whether they win or lose Remember that children play sport for their enjoyment Remember that children learn best by example - teach them what sportsmanship means Respect the decisions of match officials and teach children to do the same The acknowledgement of these principles was evident throughout the day with great sportsmanship witnessed from all clubs from the Under 6 s through to Under 12 s. It was an excellent day with hundreds of players, parents and friends all making the trip to Dalby for one last round of Junior Rugby. The day was a great success, and an extremely well run carnival and the Dalby Rugby Club should be commended on their efforts, as they also had the pleasure of hosting the senior elimination finals in the afternoon which capped off a massive day of Rugby in Dalby. Big congratulations should go out to the USQ Saints club as they were awarded the Junior Club of the year at the Downs Rugby Awards Night. After a large growth in numbers this season and strong club structures, they were rewarded for their efforts towards junior Rugby on the Downs. Downs hosted the Gold Coast on Sunday 24 th August with teams from the U13, U14 and U16 ages groups travelling to Gold Park for some trial matches in the lead up to the State Championships at the end of September. Whilst the Gold Coast boys had the slight wood over our teams, everyone learnt a lot and they now look towards the start of the Championships on Monday 23 rd September. August 2013 Page 3

2013 QJRU STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS ALBANY CREEK, BRISBANE - 23 TO 25 SEPTEMBER Assistance with Costs - To assist with the costs to attend the State Championships, there are two support programs which may be worth considering: 1. The Young Athlete Assistance Program This program is aimed at young athletes in Queensland who have competed at a State or State School Championship, National or National School Championship or International Championship. This grant funding is perfect for Teenage State Championships that are coming up Scope of financial assistance: Financial assistance of $200 is available to assist with the cost of travel and accommodation for the eligible championship. A list of the eligible championships, as nominated by Queensland School Sport Unit or the relevant State or National Sporting Organisation, is published under the "Eligibility" section above. Athletes are only eligible to receive financial assistance once every two years from the date the application was received by the Department of Communities. Lodging an application does not guarantee funding. Applications will not be considered before the start of a championship. As the funding is provided retrospectively, applicants are required to use their own resources to travel to championships. Financial assistance of $200 is available to eligible athletes once every two years from the date the application was received by the Department of Communities Website 2. Local Sporting Champions Grant to help young people pursue their sporting dreams. Young people find it difficult to meet the ongoing and significant costs associated with participation at sporting competitions, particularly those from regional areas. The Local Sporting Champions program is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance for young people aged towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing, coaching or officiating at an official national sporting organisation (NSO) endorsed state, national or international sporting championships or a School Sport Australia state or national championships. Application forms Local Sporting Champions Program - Individual Application Local Sporting Champions Program - Team Application Who is eligible? The Local Sporting Champions program is designed to support young people participating in state, national and international level sporting championships as either an athlete, coach or official. In order to be eligible to apply for a Local Sporting Champions grant, young people must meet the following criteria: Be between 12 and 18 years of age (inclusive) at the time of the nominated sporting championship. Be an Australian citizen or have been granted permanent resident status, residing in Australia. Be participating as an athlete, coach, umpire or referee. We were both expecting big things for these girls and we were not disappointed. Results are below: Pool Game 1 - Darling Downs 24 VS 0 Clarvaux MacKillop Pool Game 2 - Darling Downs 19 VS 0 Gold Coast 2 Pool Game 3 - Darling Downs 22 VS 0 Sunshine Coast Barbarians August 2013 Page 6

What a start! First game we chose to receive the kick off, ball was kicked to Shenae Ciesiolka who threw a cut out pass to Dominque Du Toit who sprinted down the sideline and scored under the posts! This trend continued in the second game when a perfectly timed after the pass saw Shenea hit a hole up the middle and sprint away to score under the posts from the kick off. We were particularly impressed in their defence with only 1 team so far getting the ball into our half let alone scoring any points. However it wasn t looking good as we only had 3 subs left due to injuries leading into the finals. Quarter Final - Darling Downs 26 VS 5 Pine Rivers Semi Final - Darling Downs 24 VS 5 Nth Qld Barbarians The first 2 finals really tested the girls, especially in defence but with some amazing team efforts we were able to keep these 2 great teams to only 1 try. However this success came at a price with yet another injury leaving the side with 2 subs leading into the Grand Final. The girls were almost completely exhausted as they had already played 5 games and they knew they were coming up against a very strong attacking side. Grand Final - Darling Downs 27 VS 12 Brisbane State High WINNERS! What a way to finish a great day. We left our best rugby to the end as we ran in 5 tries to 2 to claim the Inaugural Q7s title. Special mention to Sophie Fitzgerald who captained the girls and really put in a captains knock for the final, and in my mind was the reason why we kept BSHS to 2 tries. Her defence and breakdown work in the middle of the field was outstanding. We had 4 girls selected in the Queensland U/18 Girls 7s Train-on Squad. Big congratulations to Georgina Rackemann, Dominique Du Toit, Shenae Ciesiolka and Sophie Fitzgerald. These 4 definitely deserved their spot and I wish them all the success in the future. AARONS COACHING TIP OF THE MONTH The Catch and Pass is one of the most important and often most over-looked aspects of Rugby. It is important to try and get youngsters passing with the correct technique and catching with the correct technique from as young as possible. The Spin Pass shouldn t be introduced until they are playing teenage rugby as it is an incredibly inaccurate pass. Some coaching points for Junior Rugby are: Hands Up I get the kids to make a W with their thumbs and pointers Watch the ball Pistols This is pointing after they pass the ball, I get them making pistols with their hands Communication As you get into Teenage Rugby, the coaching points become a bit more technical: Hands Up towards passer Outside Foot up Hips facing passer It is also important to not over complicate the drill you use to help them with these skills. Yours in Rugby, Aaron Burnett aaron.burnett@qru.com.au August 2013 Page 7

Jarrod Meintjes was one of the lucky few that was chosen as a recipient of the Lexus Ball Kid Competition to be one of the official Lexus Ball Kids at the Qantas Wallabies v British & Irish Lions Test Match at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday, June 22. Jarrod had the opportunity to meet the Qantas Wallabies at the Captains Run on Friday 21 st June, have photographs taken with the team and sit in on the exclusive pre-match training session. Not only did Jarrod win this experience he got to share it with his family he also received four tickets for his family to attend the match and they got to drive around in a Lexus RX luxury SUV for the entire weekend of the test match in Brisbane. The Roma 7 s will be back again next year and has been set down to be held on the 15 th February so save the date into your calendars and start getting a team together. More details will be sent out closer to the date. The president of the ARU, David Crombie, took the time to travel to St George and watch grass roots Rugby in one of its most remote locations. He flew out along with Downs Rugby board members Mike Horan (Chair) and Dick Webster as they watched the Frillnecks take on the Toowoomba Bears in their Round 17 Risdon Cup clash. It was a great day of Rugby and they all thoroughly August 2013 Page 9

enjoyed being able to meet and mingle with some of the most travelled Rugby players in the world, as they spoke about the dedication and commitment it takes to play for St George. The day also featured a Rookies2Reds clinic which saw a massive participation of young boys and girls from St George, and was one of the Downs most successful clinics yet. 14 VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH AWARD NATHAN WORM BRADLEY DALBY WHEATMEN Nathan is a current Wheatman player, coach, referee, parent, supporter and water boy Congratulations Nathan 1. Why do you love volunteering for your club? I love being involved with The Dalby Rugby Club because it has such a great community and family atmosphere. I made lifelong friends when I played and now that my son Charlie is playing I want to be part of giving him the same opportunity and experiences. A country rugby club needs parents to volunteer their time to make our club what it is and hopefully continue to be in the future for the up and coming kids. 2. How long have you been involved at the club and how did you become involved? I started being involved in the club in 1998 as a player and now as a junior coach since In the last few years I have been involved also as a Junior game day rep and this year helping on the coaching staff for the seniors and even attempted to throw the boots back on for C grade. 3. What s your best memory or moment? One of the best memories for me was playing in 2 A grade finals and also seeing a bunch of boys as 6 year olds develop into great young men as 10 year olds playing great footy. 4. Why should people volunteer? Volunteering in our club starts from the top with our board members right down to the people who clean up after game days. Without these people our club wouldn t be as successful as it is today which as a volunteer is personally rewarding. Proudly Supported by August 2013 Page 14
