3 Barony of Stierbach 3 From Your Baron Colum Maxwell and Baroness Briana Maclukas Greetings unto the populous of Stierbach, We trust you all had an enjoyable Twelfth Night season and are spending these unseasonably warm winter days preparing for the battles to come in the spring! We have enjoyed spending time with many of you in recent weeks. Baronial at Home and Bardic were wellattended this month. More than a score of talented gentles attended Bardic, which sent us scrambling for places to seat everyone! With contributions of venison, soup, cookies and brownies, no one went hungry either. Winter archery has good attendance, both in Stierbach and Sudentorre. The ranks of Stierbach archers continue to increase and to become more skillful. The Glass Guild is growing and gaining notice among glass artists in Atlantia. We now have a Baronial lampworking kit with torches, glass and beginning supplies, so if you want to come and learn, let either Lady Grace Whyting or Baroness Briana know. Just a reminder that Stierbach and Sudentorre are hosting Kingdom A&S on March 4 th. If you have not yet volunteered to help out, please do so. And, while you re thinking of volunteering, remember that Baronial Birthday is June in Spotsylvania. Lord Marcolo DelMare is Autocrat, and will welcome your assistance.

4 4 The Bull As always, Pennsic looms on the horizon for many of us only six months away!! We hope many of you will camp with us in the baronial encampment, and that one brave soul will step forward as Pennsic Land Agent. In Service to Crown and Barony, Colum and Briana Notes from the December Baronial Business Meeting December 6th, 2005; As reported by Iustinos Countess Denise wants you to know that Stierbach Rocks! At the Kingdom Seneschal s Deputy Meeting, she noted that this barony was the ideal group. She also sent us a nice written note along with a holiday card. Changes at Curia. The Oak is going online and will be published once per year. A hard copy may be requested by anyone. The Kingdom will not take a loss for any event excepting the University of Atlantia. Funds will be expended for University from the University Fund. Crown Tourney adjustment. All the terminology has been cleaned up to say competitor and consort. The gender of the competitor and consort may not be the same. Competitors in Crown Lists must have registered arms or present proof of heraldic submission currently in process. Kingdom Crusades will be held on Columbus Day weekend. University will be the first weekend unless Kingdom Crusades is also the first weekend.

5 Barony of Stierbach 5 Discussion regarding the Kingdom Travel Fund: No final ruling, but here is the synopsis. The members of Curia (Seneschal, Baronage, K&Q, P&P) suggest that the Kingdom Travel Fund be increased from $700 to $1400- $1500. In general, the fund is meant to cover the cost of travel, event fees, and lodging incurred in the process of attending events during their time as Heirs and as the Crowns. The initial amount under discussion comes out of the General Fund. Any additional funds raised during the reign may be applied to additional travel. Money left over in the travel fund gets rolled over to the next Reign. Some suggestions were made about how to fund the travel fund. One idea was to add a surcharge of $1 to each Kingdom Level Event. The General Fund tends to make between $3000 and $5000 each year. The financial health of the Kingdom is good. According to the Kingdom Exchequer, Atlantia can afford this increase. The Barony had extensive discussion. One suggestion made by the group was to change the rollover of funds from Reign to Reign into a Use-or-Lose proposition. Exchequer s Meeting: Overview Request for Warrant Forms do not tell the bank who is authorized to manage the funds of the local group. A new form, the actual Warrant will be distributed for the Exchequer and all Exchequer deputies. Seneschal s Meeting : Overview There is a new office of Media Relations at the Society level. This office will be rolled down into the local groups. (One of the responsibilities of local groups shall be the gathering of newsclippings that mention the SCA from the local area.) Baron Wilhem is the Kingdom Media Relation s Deputy. The goal is to present a positive image of the SCA. The seneschal will be reviewing the guidelines. Effective May 10 th, the Chatelaine Report shall be due

6 6 The Bull on the 10 th of the month. The kingdom will be coming up with newcomer information templates for flyers and posters. Copies of all newcomer materials will be submitted to Kingdom for information. New information will become available staring in January. Strenuous objections were raised to the stratification of the process of developing media materials. All newcomer materials produced must be approved by the Kingdom Media Relations Deputy. After some chewing on the subject, discussion was tabled. A Teen Liaisons is requested from each barony and local group. The liaison will communicate with the Kingdom Teen Liaison and other TLs in the kingdom. That person will be a teenager, not an adult. A new Kingdom Event Bid form has been created. The Archery Marshals meeting was very quiet. See the minutes on the Archery Listserv. Baronage meeting was pretty dull. Holiday Faire Finals We made money! We had lots of fun. 475 people. Lunch ~$200 Silent Auction ~$750 Turkey Shoot ~$122 From Troll: Net $4351 Gross $2649 Comments on Lunch: 200 portions was too much, 150 would have been ample. Sell drinks would be a good idea. Don t forget to feed the archers! (The lunch schedule coincided with the Lochmere arrow.) Vegetarians and Omnivores were pretty happy. Carnivores were not. The heat in the other building was an issue. A site map would have helped a lot to raise awareness of the fact that there was a second building. Merchant List by building would also be nice. The location of Troll should be such that people find it first thing when they enter the event.

7 Barony of Stierbach 7 Christmas Parade: People went. It was cold. Otel the Lumberjack went running up and down the parade route with a Yule log. Potlock was nice. 12 th Night. The barony tables will be in the 40 s. Baronage & 48. Longbow at DftG: Sudentorre hosts at the end of March. Baronial Birthday: We need an autocrat. We really want to book a site. The Miller s Farm from last year was remembered fondly. Some desire for siege practice or siege targeting if we use the site was expressed. Land Agent for Pennsic: Volunteer!! One possibility suggested was to divide the duties of Land Agent from that of Camp Steward. Kingdom A&S. Like to pull together a Hall cleanup crew. The main information is hosted on the Sudentorre website. Brewers & Bakers competition. The Baroness is requesting the artisans of the barony make ~10 small tokens to be handed out at Kingdom A&S. No template or approval process is required. She would like to hand them out to the various and sundry participants in Kingdom A&S. Expense authorized up to $40.50 for cleaning and maintenance on the baronial cornets. Receipts will be submitted for reimbursement. Glass guild would like torches and glass supplies to teach people things. Torches are $40.50 each under sale price. Two starter kits (~$178). Receipts will be submitted for reimbursement. Foam for Targets $120. Receipts will be submitted for reimbursement. Lunch will be paid for by the Barony (~$900) if Sudentorre needs it. All Baronial Devices have been passed. The Names are nowhere and will have to be resubmitted. Enequy will be researching how to do the populace approval on the names.

Karen Addendum by Iustinos: If anyone is interested in more cross-stitch patterns on the theme of Stierbach, here is a link to a website of a Stierbach alumna who made these patterns a few years ago. Isabelle is not active in the SCA anymore and has moved out of the area. If anyone uses them, I'm sure she would be happy to know they were being put to work. She made them for everyone's use. 10 10 The Bull Event Announcement Love Pure and Chaste from Afar February 11th, 2006 Barony of Bright Hills The frigid winds of winter have chased even the hardiest of armies from the fields. Now as the long, cold nights close in, journey to Bright Hills for a day of romance, a feast to delight both your eyes and palate, and an evening of dancing - sweetened by a side boards of deserts, specially created to hand feed to your partner! During the day there will be classes, A&S competitions, and games. Martial Activities: There will be a very great festival of arms and a very noble tourney with weapons of measure and tourney swords, in appropriate armor, with crests, coats of arms of the noble tourneyers, as is the ancient custom. The passages of arms in both armoured and civilian style combats shall include personal challenges of matched weapons, over a barrier or without as it pleases the combatants. Also there shall be a grand melee, consisting of two teams in full harnesses. The winner of the armoured tourney will "crown" their consort the "Queen/King of Love and Beauty". Whilst the winner of the civilian tourney likewise, will "crown" their consort the "Princess/Prince of Love and Beauty." Both of which shall be seated at the high table during for the feast day of Saint Aldobrandini. And at this Tourney Of Love and Beauty there will be noble and rich prizes given by ladies and damsels for the exemplification of the seven knightly virtues; Courage, Justice, Mercy, Generosity, Faith, Nobility, and Hope. Moreover, we entreat all such knights, barons, lords,

11 Barony of Stierbach 11 squires and men at arms who intend to participate in the tourney to bring with them their best displays of heraldic achievements, including banners, shields, surcoats and crests. Arts & Sciences Activities: Lady Martelle von Charlottenburg is coordinating A&S displays. 13 Barony of Stierbach 13 Event Announcement Tournament of Love and Beauty February 18, 2006 Barony of Ponte Alto The time is 1471 in England In honor of the Feast Day of Saint Aldobrandini, the Barony of Ponte Alto is holding a passage of arms that exemplifies chivalric love and honour, both on and off the field, as can be found in the ballads and tourneys of the 15th century, including King Rene of Anjou's Book of Love and The Book of the Tourney. The winner of the heavy tourney will "crown" their consort the "Queen/King of Love and Beauty". The winner of the rapier tourney likewise, will "crown" their consort the "Princess/Prince of Love and Beauty." Aside from the overall combat champion, all rapier and heavy fighters will be vying for prizes won by displaying any of the 7 knightly virtues: Courage, Justice, Mercy, Generosity, Faith, Nobility, Hope. Martial Activities: Fighting activities for heavy and rapier will be in a round robin format. More details about the format will be forthcoming. Arts & Sciences Activities: The Baron and Baroness of Ponte Alto will be seeking to fill the position of Baronial Artisan and Baronial Bard. The current Baronial Notables will be provide details about these competitions. Baroness Elspet Byndelase (Elspet@ gmail.com) is sponsoring a "Best 15th Century Persona Accessory" contest, and documentation is required. These should be common items that might have been used by the person whose clothes you are wearing. Can be any item worn and/or used by a person living in Europe in the 15th Century that is not part of their main dress or clothing (i.e. not part of their "suit of clothes"). Items are limited to those that are either attached to or able to be carried comfortably by a person. Some examples are: jewelry, bags, belts, shoes, trade tools, personal hygiene items, lighting, eating utensils, head-coverings, toys, money, writing implements, livery insignia, games, books, scientific instruments, gloves. Extra points will be awarded to entrants that "wear" the item in context and can speak about its relationship to their persona. Lady Renata will be sponsoring a Scribal competition. More details will be forthcoming. Meistr Gruffudd ap Cadfael (Carl Harris) will be preparing a sumptuous feast in the English 15th century style. 15 Barony of Stierbach 15 Event Announcement A Day in the Middle East February 25, 2006 Barony of Dun Carraig Spend a day in the Medieval Middle East with classes on dancing, henna, and other topics. There will be a wonderful feast, a Children's Corner, A & S and dancing! Attendees are encouraged to bring rugs, pillows or other accessories to add to the Middle Eastern flavor of the event.
