1 1 of 18 6/7/2009 8:38 PM Letters: Greetings unto the great Barony of Stierbach from your Baron and Baroness. We cannot believe that it is May already. Happy birthday to the SCA, AS 44! This means that it is time to once again look to the next year and ask, What do we want to accomplish? If you have ideas on things the Barony or the Cantons should pursue over the next year we encourage you to bring them up to us or any of the seneschals. The next Baronial event is Birthday, which is being held the end of August this year. Lady Alienor de Bathe is the autocrat and I am sure that she would love to hear from you if you would like to help in anyway. Planning is well underway and we understand the theme is

2 2 of 18 6/7/2009 8:38 PM heraldry, so now is the time to work on your heraldic displays! At birthday we will also be choosing our new champions. If you are interested in becoming a Baronial Champion now is the time to start thinking about it. Being the Baronial champion is a wonderful honor, and if you have any questions on what it means to be a champion please feel free to ask us about our expectations, or any previous champion about what they thought of being champion. Between now and Birthday is Pennsic War. If you are intending to go to Pennsic and participate in war points please let our Baronial Warlord, Lord Stefan von Kiel, know so that he can start planning on unit sizes and make up. His Excellency will be joining the ranks as a spearman, and Her Excellency is working on becoming combat archery authorized. In addition we will be fighting in Rapier war points and will join the Barony in the traditional Baronial War Point archery shoot. Keep your eyes open on the Pennsic Moo list for updates on schedules and other information concerning Pennsic. We will be using the Pennsic Moos list to coordinate all Baronial Activities at war, so even if you are not camping with the Barony please watch the list for announcements. If you are planning on joining us on the field at Pennsic, please watch the Moo for Baronial and regional musters. We are working with the Warlord to organize some armoring and ammunition making days to help everyone get ready to take the field. If you need help getting stuff ready please contact the Baronial Warlord or us and let us know how we can help. If you are not going to Pennsic, please feel free to take advantage of these opportunities as well. More fighters means that we can simulate more complicated scenarios and have more fun. Yours, Flaithri et Rhonwen Greetings unto the great Barony of Stierbach from your Chronicler. Spring is a time of new beginnings, ideas, and creativity. Therefore I call upon you to share your creativity with your Barony by contributing to The Bull, our Barony s monthly newsletter. Remember that this is YOUR newsletter. If you think there is nothing interesting to read in it, do not stop reading it but instead contribute to it so we can all find new, interesting things to read for all. Contributions for Scribal Corner (pictures of scrolls, be they ones you have made or have received), general A&S articles, martial art announcements, or anything else you would like to add are always welcome. It is a far better thing to have too many articles to chose between than to send out a bare bones issue and feel that we are at least satisfying Kingdom law. It is our Barony that we should be satisfying, by making our newsletter truly ours. In service, Lady Bianca di Bari Court Report for Sapphire Joust, On the bright spring morning of May 23rd their Majesties Logan and Esa were minded of a bit of official business that they needed to attend to. As they happened to be by the rapier field they called a quick court to allow the following business: Lady Luce Antony Venus transferred the office of Kingdom Chatelaine to Lady Elizabet de Roslyn Their Majesties then caught sight of a number of foreign rapier fighters in the assembly and asked them what purpose brought them. After a quick exchange of words a box was brought forward containing some interesting items intended for a special individual. With a moment of deliberation that person was called forward and recognized:

Might be some interest from Sudentorre Highland River Melees June 05-07, 2009 Barony of Highland Foorde Come and join us as we celebrate our 10th Anniversary as a Barony and the investiture of a new Baron and Baroness of Highland Foorde! In the year 1278, Llewelyn ap Grufudd (Llewelyn the Last) pays homage to King Edward I. He is finally allowed to marry Elinor, daughter of Simon de Montfort. King Edward claims northern Ce redigion and begins building a string of strong castles at Aberystwyth, Flint, Rhuddlan, and Builth to enforce his presence in Wales. Bit by bit Edward and his officials gradually extend English control within Wales. In so doing, they alienate leaders disposed to be their allies. In 1282 Llywelyn s brother Dafydd has had enough, and launches an attack on Hawarden Castle. Dafydd s upris ing spreads quickly, and Llewelyn gives it his support perhaps spurred by the death of Elinor in giving birth to a daughter, Gwenllian. King Edward makes a show of offering concessions, but the arrogance of the terms make it impossible for the Welsh leaders to accept. It is now June 6th and a contingent of King Edward s men are attempting to cross the Menai Straits... which side will you fight on? Prepare yourselves for a day of exiting melee fighting, arts and sciences, and bardic fun. Website:

We have some meetings and activities to help introduce you to the SCA. See the Newcomers Page, or contact for more information. Practices Heavy & Fencing Indoor year round Heavy and Rapier fighter practice in the Manassas area: The Prince William Fencing Academy has offered us space at their gym for practice. Tuesday evenings from 7-9 pm at the Prince William Fencing Academy 8440 Kao Circle Manassas. It is just down the street from the library where the business meetings are held. This is the largest permanent Olympic style fencing gym in Virginia. That being said there are some specific rules that will need to be followed so that we don t break their equipment: To protect the metal floors no going to your knees for either heavy or rapier. Lanyards will need to be worn with rattan weapons. This will ensure no flying weapons since there will be non-armored combatants in the area as well as a wall of mirrors on one side and 2 scoring machines we don t want to replace. No great weapons again to protect the scoring equipment. There is an annual site waiver you will need to sign from the facility to practice. There is a floor fee of $5 a fighter. No street shoes or boots. Sneakers with non-marking soles only. Please contact Lord Alexandre de Tourouvre for more information on heavy weapons and fencing practices. Archery Meets: Mondays.
