LII (2017) Issue 12 The Boar's Head in Hand Have I The year ends with a scene of the hunt. The man on the right blows a horn, probably to signal that the hunt is over. There seem to be at least two breeds of dog represented, a sleek courser (greyhound?) and a more muscular looking, short-snouted dog. Some dogs have collars and some don't I wonder why? Dec 9: Caer Mear Yule (Ashland, VA) Annual Yuletide potluck party. One adult and one children's A&S competition, both with the theme Yule Treats, edible or non. Jan 12-14: Twelfth Night (Virginia Beach, VA) No we're not camping the event will be held in a hotel! 15th century Italian theme (you do not have to dress to the theme). Royal Bard competition, hobbyhorse procession contest, dancing, gaming, Garb Runway Challenge, largess competition, embellished headware competition, Clerk Signet scribal blank competition. Barony or Scriptorium who enters the largest number of scribes (not blanks) also gets a prize! 2 Dance Practice: December 4, 11, 18, 810pm. Join the Dance listserv for the latest news. Archery Arrow Making (Target and Combat): December 10 at 1-4pm, 1819 Potomac Ave SE Washington DC BYO materials if you want to take arrows home; otherwise, just bring yourself to help make/repair baronial loaner gear and learn the skills. Baronial At-Home: None for December. Early Northern European Adhocracy: December 11, 7-9pm, 9426 Canterbury Riding, Laurel, MD. Planning for next year, maybe scroll blanks for 12th Night.

Baronial News Highlights New Location for Populace Meeting: Alas, poor Canterbury Riding. We knew it, Horatio. Join Storvik on the third Sunday of the month at METRO ACCESSIBLE Jason's Deli in College Park for the Populace Meeting. We will start to gather in the reserved back room at 6:30pm, have a dinner or a snack and socialize. Baronial business will be discussed at 7pm. Jason's Deli is in the strip mall at Knox Rd and Rt 1, down a block from weekly practice at St Andrew's. Parking is free on Sundays. Palio Horses at Twelfth Night: There will be a procession of palio horses (tricked-out hobbyhorses) at Twelfth Night, and Storvik intends to Dress(age) to Impress! Only one horse is our Official Baronial Entry, but lots and lots of horses and people can process, displaying heraldry and livery. Come and play! Scribal Blank Competition at Twelfth Night: In addition to the usual Best in Show (for expert and novice), Master Etienne Le Mons will be sponsoring a prize to the barony or scribal group that submits scrolls by the largest number of scribes. Not the largest number of scrolls, total, but the number of folks who participated. Give it a go! Skol! Word-fame for those in Storvik's hall Praise and honor for those of Storvik who braved the lists of Crown Tournament, or who inspired the brave warriors onward: Lord John Angus West, our quartermaster, fighting for Maestra Gracia Esperanca de Seville, our seneschal. Lord Hakon of Ponte Alto fighting for Elenor Bywater, our Armored Champion. Lord Geoffroy Hart fighting for Lady Matilda Wynter, both stalwart companions on Storvik's drekkars. Sir Joscelin d'outremer, now of Ponte Alto but long of Storvik, fighting for Lady Symone de la Rochelle Praise and honor too for Baroness Emma West, the autocrat for Crown Tournament who made it all happen and on fairly short notice as well. She was ably supported by Lady Tirzah MacCrudden at the gate, Lord Carlyle on field set-up, Baroness Janina running A&S and others including a Parking Coordinator, plus all of the staff who supported these leads. Thanks to all who helped with the absolutely fantastic set-up at Crown Tournament. The augmented and repainted lists, the spears, the banners, the new tent it looked incredible. I know Master Llyr 3

Many thanks to Lady Kanamori Tatsume, who has stepped up to be our Webminister. I learned at Univent that the Chronicler is the Webminister if there isn't another one, so especially warm thanks from me to all who have recently held this position! Skol! for newcomer Jacqueline, who volunteered, at her first event, to serve as deputy webminister! And a personal thank you to Lady Kunigunde, who rescued my spoon, the mighty implement called Food Shovel, from an ignominious end at Crown. Someone mistook Food Shovel's burns and battle scars as evidence that it was trash! But Kunigunde's keen eyes saw its true worth, and it has returned to me again. Many thanks! Between the Beltways Twelfth Night is playing at the Shakespeare Theatre Company. Early Music DC lists the period holiday concerts. Beyond the Beltway a selection of the famous Terracotta Warriors are at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond through March 11. 4

Photo by Jamie Lennon On November 14, the Storvik Early Northern European Adhocracy (SENEA) celebrated three years of research into the arts, sciences and history of pre-1100 northern Europe. The group is considering broadening its focus into more general A&S in the coming year. In token of this, this year's dinner was taken from Roman sources as redacted in A Taste of Ancient Rome. The menu was: First Course: Romaine and Endive Salad with Sauce of Cheese and Dates; Herbed Cheese Spread and Bread; Mixed Olives Second Course: Roasted Pork with a Sauce for Boiled Ostrich; Beets with Mustard Sauce; Grilled Mushroom Caps (portabella and morel) Dessert: Savillium, a ricotta-based cheesecake flavored with honey and poppy seeds. Favorites of the night were the pork with the mustard sauce from the beets; the herbed cheese spread; and the mushrooms. The morels, which were reconstituted from dried, had a great flavor and only a slightly weird texture from their processing. There were only five of us eating, and the menu was not so large, but the level of effort required was surprising. Hats off to our feast cooks, who do more complex meals for over ten times the number of people! 5

No Baronial At-Home this month because of holidays. Monday Practice canceled Dec 25 and Jan 1. Events Crown Tournament Baroness Emma did an awesome job! Her staff did an awesome job! We should put in lots of bids for Crown at that site.
