May 2007 Newsletter Under 16s 3rd Lancashire Cup win puts Tarleton alongside the "Big Boys" Vale of Lune 5 Tarleton 50 In securing the third Lancashire Cup win in a row, Tarleton now join Preston Grass Hoppers (twice), Widnes and Fylde as the only clubs to have secured three consecutive Lancashire Cup wins. An outstanding win for the under 16s, with a superb team performance was a fitting swan song, as the boys prepare to step up to colts rugby. Lancashire's John White described the performance as a "whirlwind" that hit Vale full on, never allowing Vale to get into there stride. Andrew Bushell opened the scoring with under a minute gone as the speed and handling of the backs left Vale with no answer. Trys from prop Tom Potter and wing Andrew Fishwick soon followed, bushy kicking two from three for a nineteen point lead with barely ten minutes of play gone!. The game surely now out of Vales grasp. The handling and running of the backs, was a joy to behold after a season of ten man rugby. The forwards who had expected a hammering from the far heavier Vale pack, stood their ground, and at the line out and breakdown were by far the dominant pack. I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E TARLETON RUGBY NEWS Stan Stock not only securing line our ball but stealing a great deal of Vales. Further trys from Sean Murphy and bushy sealed the game. Vale prop Stuart Hesketh scoring for Vale just before the break. The comfortable lead allowed coach Steve Wood an easy decision in bringing on the rest of his squad ensuring as many players as possible became involved in this glorious occasion. The second half continued in much the same vane though at a what appeared a reduced pace. Archie Skofic running in two trys and Sean Taylor one. Bushy kicking five from eight conversions and going on to be awarded the Bill Becket trophy for man of the match. To summarise FANTASTIC! Andrew Bushell Man of the match U16 s Lancashire Cup Final 2007 What is your biggest achievement to date? - Winning Lancashire Cup for School and Club in Not many people know this about me I am a massive PNE supporter! 2 P a g e 2 Tarleton s Community Coach Jamie Albinson About Jamie Albinson - Tarleton RUFC s community sports coach Been playing rugby since age 9 Represented County at every Age Group Represented North England U16s Received Rugby Scholarship from Kirkham Grammar at age 16 Represented England at U18s Got into England U19s Training Squad Got a full-time contract to play for Bristol Shoguns Academy Now Sedgley Park s first team scrum-half in National 1 Employed as CRC in January Work 15 hours per week on the clubs Primary Schools I have been coaching Tag Rugby in the local Primary schools to Tarleton Yr5 & 6. In June we ran a Tag Tournament in which 10 schools attended. That is over 100 new children visiting the club. We repeated this tournament in November with 13 teams and got the local press involved. Club volunteers assisted me in the coaching of some schools in the build up to the Tournament and preparation on the day. The work with these age groups in the primary schools is ongoing. We concluded with a larger Tournament in February involving South Ribble schools. In order to recruit players for our mini section (Yr3 & 4 Primary School) I have been running Tag Taster Days at local primary schools for all children at this age. With the help of a club volunteer at each session we have promoted the club by handing out fliers Jamie s take on his involvement Would you like to help your Rugby Club in a lasting and meaningful way???. Why not become a Founder Member? It is open to all individuals and families at the club. There are about 50 Founder Members who give valuable all year round support to the club charity, in the form of monthly standing order payments (either 5 or 10 per month) under a gift aid scheme. This enables the club to reclaim the tax on the donations. It is painless and, for the equivalent price of a round of drinks at the pub each month, YOU can make a permanent difference. Founder Members enjoy a discount on annual subscriptions. Moreover, it is planned to commemorate the individuals and the families High Schools At High School level, I have been targeting/coaching Yr7 boys at both Bishop Rawsthorn and Tarleton High. From this coaching work both schools have entered in the North Lancashire State Schools Competition as well as the Emerging Schools Tournament for the first year ever (both did really well). They also entered a 4 school Tournament that was held at the club. I have set the PE Teachers up at these Schools with their Level 1 course on the agreement that they will continue to coach rugby, enter our tournaments and promote the club via our Schools Club Links. All schools I have entered have posters and information they need about the club this will provide ongoing recruitment over the years as both these local sides will be playing more rugby and will have the information needed to join the club. I have recently agreed a School Club Link with Hutton Grammar School. I believe this will be extremely valuable to the club long term. No coaching will be done on my part at the School as it is not needed. However the School will promote its players here rather than to Preston Grasshoppers and have all promotional material to do this. In return, I invited Hutton s feeder Primary Schools to our Tag tournament in Feb and assisted them with the coaching that s needed to prepare them. We have also offered the club as a venue for anything run by the School. I also ran sessions for Girls Yr7-9 at Bishop Rawstorne and Tarleton High, and entered them into a Contact Tournament at Ormskirk in which they competed with 4 other schools. Founder Members who have supported the charity as founder members in the form of a plaque in the entrance of the new clubhouse. Contact Jonathan Skofic on or a jskofic@cott.co.uk for more information. The forms required to become a founder member can be downloaded by clicking on the links on the website under Founder Member Scheme (Founder Member Standing Order Form and Gift Aid Declaration Form). Don t think that you need to have been at the club since Day One in order to become a founder member. New members are coming on board regularly. TRUFC want new people to join!

P a g e 3 Hutton Grammar School Rugby Festival On Saturday 10 March 2007 Tarleton RUFC once again hosted Hutton Grammar School s year seven end of season rugby festival. This was played between five under 11s sides; Hutton Grammar A, Hutton Grammar B, Castle Rushen Isle of Man, Longridge Towers, Berwick on Tweed, and Tarleton under 12s.The event was won by Hutton A who won all their matches. Tarleton drew with Hutton B and had narrow defeats against the other sides. Tarleton s try scorers were Jake Mann and Ryan Ball. Special mention must go to James Harrison for some fantastic tackling; against Castle Rushen he put in one try saving tackle which resulted in his opponent landing two yards outside of the pitch! This was the first time the Tarleton twelves had played 15 a side rugby on a full size pitch so their performance has to be highly commended. Team Manager Steve Mann said This was a tremendous experience for the boys. They showed fantastic effort and commitment to play 15 a side rugby against these experienced school teams and to put in such a creditable display. Tarleton Rugby Development Project Phase 4 update Planning is underway to bring the upstairs lounge into use as soon as resources and permissions will allow. Grant applications are being prepared, and will be submitted during the close season to the Big Lottery and to a number of Environmental Trusts. To be successful with those grants, the club will need to demonstrate that the lounge area can provide benefit and value to the wider local community e.g. as a meeting room or small function room Preliminary discussions are also being conducted with local breweries and with the District Council licensing authority. Subject to getting satisfactory outcomes to the above strategy, it is hoped to have the lounge operational before the end of season 2007/08.

P a g e 4 Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the club will be held on Monday 21 st of May at Tarleton Bowling Club at 7.30 p.m. Nominations for office-bearers to serve on the club s Executive Management Committee and the Club Captain need to be submitted to the Club s Secretary, Barry Cook by Monday the 7 th of May. As well as receiving the annual accounts, reports will be presented by the Chairman and the Vice Chairman (playing matters) Tarleton 1st XV two BIG Games remain With the 1st teams league season over with, they have 2 massive games left. Having finished second in North Lancs1 they now have a play off game against Keswick from the Cumbrian league to see who will be promoted into North Lancs Cumbria. This is a big occasion for the club, as the 1 st 's strive for that last promotion spot they set there sights on at the beginning of the season. So if you are about, your support would be grateful on Saturday 28 th April, k..o. 3pm, down at Carr Lane. There next major game is the final of the Lancs Cup on the 7 th May (Bank holiday Monday) k..o against Heaton Moor. This will be a very entertaining and close game with Heaton Moor just narrowly loosing in the league game at Carr Lane. The 1 st team is also struggling with injuries having lost Ben Davis and Ian Turner to rugby related injuries and Pete Sanderson to an off the field incident. Some people have commented on how his looks have improved since this! Also, Ben will be available for autographs on the touchline and should also be able to provide an excellent running commentary of what he would have done in each of the situations that the rest of us mess up. In addition to this bonus, I am sure that Pete 'Mad Dog' Sanderson will also be roaming the 'ARENA' and available to offer his thoughts on the game, who deserves to be tackled late and who needs stamping on!! I'm sure you'll all agree that this is a once in a life time opportunity to spend a Saturday afternoon on the touchline with three of Tarletons finest who in all honesty make Stuart Barnes and Brian Moores rugby commentary bearable!! Team P W D L F A Diff Pts Kirkby Lonsdale Tarleton Eccles Heaton Moor Littleborough Birchfield (Lancs) Burnley Bolton Blackpool Old Bedians Bury Colne & Nelson So if you fancy the trip and would like to come on the coach which leaves Carr Lane at 10.00am ( 5.00 per supporter) then speak to Emma Walmsley All Pitches will be unavailable for use during May, due to ground mainteneance, any issues please speak with John Parton

P a g e 5 Two working parties formed to move the club forward The Executive Management Committee (EMC) has formed two working parties to assist move the club forward on two important playing development areas. Kevin Strange 1 st XV Squad Andy Gough - 2 nd XV Squad Nick Eckersley Colts Rugby Iain Crosley Junior Rugby Paul Cromack Minis Rugby John Pearce Playing Convenor Stuart Urquart North Lancs Rugby Development Officer The brief for the working party will include completion of Job Description, effective publicising of position, recruitment timetable, and the progression of the recruitment process. Review of Colts Coaching & Management A review will take place of Colts coaching and management for future seasons. The working group will be chaired by Greg Carlton assisted by the following coaches. Nick Eckersley Damien Mercer Steve Wood Nick Brown John Pearce The brief for this group includes evaluating strength s and weaknesses of past & current practice, research best practise at other clubs, evaluate and manage relationship between Colts and open age group, making recommendations regarding future coaching and management. Any Members who wish to feed in views to either of these parties should contact a member of the relevant party. Mini s Rugby Under 7 s This has been a season of two halves for our under 7 s squad, who started the season with 2 players and finished with 14!!, which means the children can now compete with all teams they play. The results are improving steadily, along with their skills. Their final game ended in a win against Ormskirk! Under 7 s on Sunday 22/04/07 with Bradley Jones U13 s helper and coaches Dave Hicks & Rob Macadam. Minis Summer Training Summer training will commence on Wednesday 13th June 6pm 7pm. Children from all of the age groups are invited to come down to Carr Lane and join in. Experience has proven that we lose quite a few players over the summer break, so the coaches have decided to run some activity sessions. Each Wednesday there will be different activities including rugby, rounders, football, cricket etc. Everyone is welcome!

Through the efforts of our many volunteers and members, the club has worked tremendously hard to generate additional income and reduce expenditure. It must be borne in mind that this is an exceptional year with the club assisting the Charity meet its financial obligations to the extension. This will be reflected in the year-end accounts that will be presented to the Annual General Meeting. In addition, there has been significant reorganisation going on around our commercial operations this year, notably the expanded catering service and on-line merchandising. I am confident that next year both these functions will contribute even greater income levels to the club s coffers. On the playing side there has been notable success, not least by the 1 st XV, who have reached the Lancashire Plate final (May 7 TH at Fylde against Heaton Moor) and have a promotion play-off against Keswick at home (Saturday 28 th April). This by virtue of finishing runners up to Kirby Lonsdale in North Lancashire Division 1 Our Under 16 s have again won their third consecutive EFE Lancashire Cup final once again against Vale of Lune. Well done lads!!!. The Junior Colts have reached the Lancashire and Cheshire Colts Plate final and play Manchester on Sunday the 29 th of April at Fleetwood. This will be Nick Eckersley s squad s second, consecutive piece of silverware, if they can pull it off. Our under 14 s and 15 s both reached EFE Lancashire finals with the latter unable to contest theirs due to school tour commitments. Both squads should be very proud of what they have achieved. Our minis have made great strides this season in terms of recruitment and re-building. The schools work carried out by Jamie Albinson, our community rugby coach, and the tournaments run in conjunction with many of our local junior schools at Carr Lane have borne much fruit. This bodes well for next and future seasons. The season s end is fast approaching with the ritual of AGM s and presentations and the prospect of summer holidays and summer sports. It will present a welcome respite from bone hard pitches, allowing time for broken bones and bruises to repair. Good luck to all our teams in whatever competitions remain and enjoy your summer break when it comes. Hugh Paterson Chairman
