1 Richard Hale School Science and Engineering Academy DOCTRINA CVM VIRTVTE 11 th November 2016 Dear Parents Remembrance Ceremony Students, old boys, governors, parents association members, police, residents of Bentley House, students from Pinewood School, and staff gathered around the School s war memorial this morning to pay tribute to servicemen and women who lost their lives in the line of duty. I would like to thank the Rev Gerry Booker, who led the prayers. Wreaths were laid by Eric Riddle, for the Richard Hale Association, Jill Murray, on behalf of the Parents Association, Mike Lewis, for the Governors and Head Boy and Girl, Adam Rhodes and Emily Clarke, on behalf of the School. I would also like to thank the trumpet players who gave a fine performance of the last post. The players were led by Bartholomew Pitt, Year 13, who played the Reveille. This year it was good to see a number of our own students along with Eric Burridge, Parachute Regiment, and John Debenham, RAF, carrying standards as follows: Oliver Faulkner Year 13 Bed & Herts Army Cadet Force Joshua Lum Year 11 Bed & Herts Army Cadet Force Mate Jenei Year 9 Police Cadets Hertford and Ware Kieran Vajda Year 9 Sea Scouts Thomas Stephens Year 7 1 st Braughing Scouts Year 12 History Trip On Tuesday 1 st November the Year 12 History students visited Westminster Abbey as part of their Tudors A Level History course. They were given a fascinating tour of the cathedral and were privileged to be shown the tombs of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York (which are not open to the public). Most impressive was the Henry VII extension to Westminster Abbey, the Lady Chapel, designed as a symbol of Henry VII's power and dynasty. The pupils visited the National Portrait Gallery in the afternoon and enjoyed the wonderful paintings of the Tudors and Stuarts, demonstrating just how much they remembered about James I from Key Stage 3! The staff at Westminster Abbey commented on their maturity and knowledge, and their impressive speaking and questioning skills. A strong performance from the whole team. We controlled the majority of the game and was it not for the opposition goalkeeper pulling off some fantastic saves the score line could have been higher. Goals came from Fin Mitham, Luke Bridgeman and Rob Coates. Man of the Match was awarded to Alfie Campbell who defended superbly throughout and was calm and composed when orchestrating attacks from the back. We now face St Joan of Arc in the third round. Senior Girls win their first rugby fixture against Simon Balle 55 5 On Wednesday 9 th November the Senior Girls Rugby squad had their first match of the season against Simon Balle. After a year of frustration with numerous cancelled and postponed fixtures this was a day that some girls probably didn t think would happen. The Simon Balle team only just managed to fulfil the fixture with a small team of 8 and after only one training session this season. We were a squad of 23, some of whom had been preparing for this fixture for over a year. The team started with a little trepidation as five of the starting seven had never played a match before but the experience and guidance (as well as the awesome sidestep) of Annabelle Ross soon put everyone s nerves to rest with an early try. This was quickly followed with tries by two excellent displays of pace from Mhairi Sampson and Annalise Spink. Another runaway try was close to fruition but was bravely stopped by a flying tackle from a Simon Balle centre which unfortunately left her out of the rest of the game. In the second quarter our lead was solidified by Grace Brown s debut try and another from Ross. After half time we switched to our other team who kept up the pressure. Abi Morgan received the kick off and immediately sat three or four of the opposition down before running round and through them to score. The opposition were waning slightly so we bolstered them with a few more of our players and despite some excellent tackling from Head Girl Emily Clarke, they managed to recycle the ball out of a number of tackles to get over for a try. We replied with some solid set plays and some nippy running by scrum-half Lorna Benstead resulting in her first score of the day. Another was to follow soon after along with tries from Cat Briggs and Izzy Wing. In total nine players from the squad scored tries, for six of whom this was their first ever game of rugby which is an excellent team effort. We hope to have a return fixture at Simon Balle in December and a number more in the new year to prepare the squad for the Berkhampsted Sevens tournament in March and then the Rosslyn Park National School Sevens in April. Well done to all the girls who played and thank you to the enthusiastic supporters who cheered every tackle and try. Come and Play Carols Event We are holding a special community come and play event on Sunday 4 th December 2-4pm at Richard Hale School. It is open to current students, siblings, staff, parents and grandparents; all instruments and singers are welcome. Even if you used to play and have an instrument lying around gathering dust, pick it up and come along to get into the festive spirit! It will be an informal event and a chance to meet other musicians whilst playing a selection of carols and Christmas music, rounding off with a short performance from our Concert Band. There is no charge for the event but festive refreshments will be available to purchase. If you would like to come along please send an to book your place/s to music@richardhale.co.uk

4 Glossop, Year 13, who has taken over from Matthew Bendin, Sports Apprentice, as Lead Referee Mentor for Richard Hale. Year 7 Bude DVD Unfortunately, there have been printing issues with the above which has caused a delay for which we apologise. As soon as they are received, parents will be notified. Pupil News Congratulations to: Oli Brady, Year 10, has the honour of being asked to be flag bearer to represent the district scouts at the Remembrance Parade in old Stevenage on Sunday. Will Brady, Year 8, has been selected to be put forward to the Hockey Junior Academy Centre for Hertfordshire U14s this season. Sonny Kirby, Year 7, is currently starring in the West End in Andrew Lloyd-Webber s production of School of Rock. Sonny plays the character James who is charge of the band s security. Opening night was on the 24 th October at the New London Theatre and was attended by Lloyd-Webber himself. As well as performing in the show several times a week the cast recently performed at Proms in the Park in front of an audience of 40,000 and will also be appearing on Michael McIntyre s Big Night In on the 19 th November. We are incredibly proud of Sonny and wish him every success over the coming weeks and months. He is a fantastic asset to the Music Department and is making a significant contribution to our choir for St. Paul s Cathedral William Reilly, Year 8, has been selected to progress to the England Hockey Board s Hertfordshire Junior Academy Centre U13 squad. Junior Ski Trip 2018 This trip is heavily over-subscribed and as a result the ballot will take place next week. We have contacted the ski company to attempt to secure extra places but this has not been possible. There will, therefore, be a number of disappointed boys. Years 8 and 9 will be given priority and those who are unsuccessful will be considered first for 2019 should they apply. Progress Reports Progress Reports for Year 9 will be available on the Parent Portal today. If you have any problems accessing the system please online@richardhale.co.uk. Please note all reports will be uploaded by 3.30pm on the date of issue. Would parents please sign inside the front cover of your son s planner to confirm having seen the report.
