6 Trennick Lane Closure- 30 October 3 November Dear Parents, During the second week of half term Cormac are replacing the road humps, applying an anti-skid surface to four areas and repainting the white lines on the stretch of Trennick Lane from Epworth Close to the SBA car park. Cormac will be on site from 0800 on Monday 30 October and will get the work completed asap but be prepared that it could take all week. Inevitably Trennick Lane will need to be closed for certain times as the road will be totally blocked by the work. Cormac will also have lorries and plant vehicles on the lane and will be parked in the Old Sports Hall car park when not in use. They will keep the road closed for as short a time as possible to minimise disruption but please plan on it being closed throughout and anything less is a bonus. When the road is closed the only access to school will be via the Snake. Parking will be on the SBA car park or overflow car park. During the works, please do not park in front of the chapel or by the fencing centre as these areas will experience two-way traffic. Head Lice It has come to our attention that a pupil in the 1st Year is suffering with head lice which is being treated. However, we need to ask all parents to check their child s and siblings hair for head lice and eggs and to treat as necessary. Please also continue to check each week for 3 weeks as this problem relies on everyone s vigilance to be eradicated. Treatment is by Wet combing this is a method of removing lice with the regular use of a finetoothed comb (the teeth of the comb must be 0.2 to 0.3mm apart). You need to comb through the entire head of washed hair (generously covered in conditioner) every four days for at least two weeks. It s important that you keep doing this until there have been three consecutive sessions without seeing any lice Medicated lotion or spray is an alternative method for treating head lice. However, no medicated treatment is 100% effective. Your pharmacist will be able to recommend an over-the-counter lotion or spray Thank you for your cooperation, From the school nurses

7 Cricket Training During Half Term Dear Players and Parents The first block of pre-season cricket training sessions will take place over the half term break. There are a number of training sessions for all age groups these are; Monday 30 October am - 1st and 2nd Year boys Monday 30 October pm Girls cricket Tuesday 31 October am - 3rd and 4th Year boys Thursday 2 November am - 5th and Sixth Form boys All training will take place in the SBA. The training sessions are for all players who wish to improve their cricketing skills and knowledge and work on techniques in time before the summer begins. The sessions are open to all cricketers but I am anticipating that team players should be present. I am aware that some of you may be going on holiday. The days will be allocated in the first two weeks after half-term. Depending on subject options, it is possible that we will not be able to provide everyone with a Taster in these two weeks and other dates will be arranged. When 5th Year students have a Sixth Form Taster they will be allowed to follow the Sixth Form Dress Code or should wear their school uniform as normal.

8 FTS Christmas Fair Saturday 2 December 2-5pm With now only 9 weeks until Christmas, the countdown continues! We are looking for stalls to sell festive crafts, gifts and goodies. If you are interested in holding a stall please contact Sarah Knowles, Events Manager on or events@truroschool.com With affordable gifts for all the family, festive fun and games, there will be many fabulous things to keep you (& your little helpers) busy. Upcoming FTS events and an appeal for help The busiest time of year for the FTS is fast approaching with the Quiz and Curry Night, Christmas Pudding making and Christmas Fairs. We are looking to the school community for help in running events as we cannot do this without you! 9 Sports Updates Sporting Achievements: Congratulations to Cam Hirst, Eli Evans and Joe Moran who have all been selected to represent Cornwall U14 Boys Football for a fixture vs Berkshire this week. UK ITF (Taekwon-Do) National Championships Congratulations to siblings Maggie and Chris Kent who between them came away with 2 bronze, 2 silver and a gold medal. U19 County Netball Tournament Playing at Truro School there were only 5 teams in the County tournament this year. A round robin tournament was played and all 11 players took to the court. Wins were recorded against Penwith College (12-6), Budehaven School (8-5) and Truro High School (8-7). Truro College proved too strong with a 5-13 loss. Truro School held them in the first half, but too many unforced errors let the college pull away. This was enough for Truro School to be tournament runners up, joining the U16s with a place in the Regional Finals in Bournemouth in January. Friday 29 th September vs Exeter U13 Girls A Team Truro 0 Exeter 3 The U13A team faced tough opponents as the side from Exeter were powerful on the ball and fast on the break which enabled them to take an early lead. The girls rallied well and worked together to form an effective press that an enabled them to have a more solid team defence as the match progressed. Miss Cobner U13 Girls B Team- 1-1 The girls played a rather tough game against a well drilled Exeter team. Truro were solid at the back though and managed to keep the ball out through outstanding defence play from the entire team. We were very unlucky not to get more than one goal as we had a number of chances, but our shots were off target. Truro were quick to react to the ball when Exeter made mistakes and took advantage of one by ensuring they were going to end the game with a draw. Well Done Girls it was a great game and the score line is definitely a fair one! Miss Manley Sunday 1 st October- U18 Girls vs Newquay 2 s This Sunday, Truro U18 Girls Hockey team played against Newquay Ladies 2 nd team. Despite playing a senior ladies team and having many players experimenting with new positions, the girls adapted extremely quickly. After conceding one goal early on from a short corner, Truro had many chances to score with A. Pryor always threatening down the right hand side, we just lacked that killer instinct and the final shot to score. After half time, more team alterations saw a marked improvement in performance, but unfortunately could not create an elusive first goal of the season. Our U18 girls ended up losing 3-0; a score line that we do not feel matched the relative performance of the teams. It was a positive preparation for our upcoming U18 County Tournament on Wednesday and after some finishing practice on Tuesday, we hope to capitalise on all of the chances we created on Sunday. Miss Cobner/Mr Ricketts Wednesday 4 th Oct- U18 Girls County Tournament This Wednesday, Truro School, hosted the Girls U18 County Hockey Tournament with high hopes of progressing to Regionals after a good weekend performance against Newquay 2 s. The girls played Truro High School and Truro College, and much like the game against Newquay, played by far the better hockey for large parts of the game. Unfortunately, we lacked the killer instinct in the D and having missed a couple of excellent opportunities, we were punished by the other teams more clinical finishing. Two goals against the run of play for Truro High School saw us lose with 2-1, and a much more evenly matched game against Truro College also

10 provided our opposition with the flattering score line of 4-2, despite 15 minutes at the end of the game without them leaving their half. A performance to be proud of, but without the results to match. Miss Cobner/Mr Ricketts Wednesday 4 th Oct- U14 Girls vs Penair- 5-0 win It took a while for the girls to settle into the game but when they did they ensured they were in control. Having all the possession, we focussed on transferring the ball around until the gaps appeared in order to create the space to move the ball forward. It took a while to get a goal after having all the possession, but when one goal came the others soon followed. It was a great game for U14 in preparation for their County Tournament in a couple of weeks. Well Done Girls! Miss Manley Wednesday 4 th Oct- U12 Girls vs Helston The U12's played a strong game in unfamiliar settings at Helston Community College this Wednesday. A smaller, square pitch with no side or back lines made for a fluid and fast game. The girls, captained by Emily, went down a goal early on but lifted their heads and fought back to win convincingly 3-1. A goal from Aimee and one from Emily put the team back in the lead and the final, superb goal that started with a brilliant tackle in defence by Anna put the victory out of the opponents reach. Amiee 2, Emily 1. Mrs Mulready Wednesday 4 th Oct- U13 Girls vs Helston The U13's played a gutsy and hard fought game against Helston this Wednesday; playing off the walls with smaller scoring D's took some getting used to but the girls found their feet with an early goal; a strong strike from Caitlin. Helston responded quickly however and levelled the score before the half term whistle. The second half was full of end to end action with both the attack and defence working hard. The girls, captained by Ellie, got stuck in and created many a chance. Anya, played well in goal and it was great to see Ellie playing outfield for a change. The score at the final whistle remained 1-1 and was a fair reflection of the closely fought game. The girls go again on Wednesday at Penair. Mrs Mulready Thursday 5 th Oct- U15 Girls vs Kings Bruton (ISHC)- 2-5 Not knowing what we were going to come up against today, we ensured we focussed on our game and how we play. However Kings Bruton were an extremely drilled team and had a focus; drive forward in space and win something in the D. In the first half we allowed the opposition to control the game but in the second half we upped our intensity and pace and ensured the battle to win the game wasn t over. We were extremely unfortunate not to get a couple more goals, the keeper was fantastic and definitely kept Kings Bruton in the game. If the game continued for another 5 minutes we would of gave the opposition a run for their money with the score line but we were just too late. The girls played outstanding and some fantastic hockey but it just wasn t our day. Well Player Girls! Miss Manley Sunday 8 th October- U18 Girls vs Duchy Following Wednesday s disappointing results in the County Tournament, the U18 Girls Hockey Team put in some much needed goal scoring practice in training and used it to great effect on Sunday vs Duchy Ladies Hockey Club. Despite the early shock of finding out that Team Coach Miss Cobner had decided to abandon us and play for the opposition, the girls continued their impressive performance from Wednesdays County Tournament but this time managed to round their performance off with goals. An early attack down the right led to a textbook pull back from the baseline and first time finish for J. Jones, straight from the training ground. Further goals followed as Truro ended up with a comfortable 4-0 win and a result to match their performances of late. Miss Cobner/Mr Ricketts Sunday 8 th October- U18 Boys vs Duchy- 7-0 win Our U18 boys took a step into the unknown playing against Duchy Senior Men s 1 st XI. After early nerves the boys settled in well and good passing, supporting and high game pace led to Truro quickly gaining the upper

11 hand. Creative attacking and clinical finishing meant that the 7-0 win was entirely deserved and reflected the Boys mature and composed performance. Miss Manley/Mr Ricketts Tuesday 10 th Oct- County Tournament Missing a few of our squad due to injuries the girls brought a couple of U15's to help out. The first half started off well with lovely goals from J.Dobson & M.Browne. In the second half we worked hard but THS stepped up their passing and work rate and scored two goals in the last three minutes to win the match. Runners-up: Group stage: V's Penair - won 5-0 (Goals - M.Browne 2, L.Heather 1, M. Owen 1, E.Powell 1) V's Mounts Bay - won 8-0 (Goals - L.Heather 3, M.Browne 2, M.Owen 2, E.Powell 1) Semi-final V's Richard Lander School - won 3-0 (Goals - M.Owen 1, E.Powell 1, C. Hatcher 1) Final: V's Truro High School - lost 0-2 A great U16 hockey county tournament finishing runners-up. The girls played really well as a team, with some lovely passages of play throughout the tournament. There were some great goals scored in short-corners and lots of great assists finishing with lovely goals. We lost an early goal in the final and with tired legs struggled to catch up in the short 15 minute match. I was really impressed with all of the girls performances and look forward to seeing how they progress at the regionals. Well Done! Mrs Wyatt Wednesday 11 th October- U18 Boys County Tournament vs Truro College loss 3-7 After being left with only 2 teams in the County Tournament, the tension between the college and us commenced. The game got under way and the possession was 50/50, both teams had equal chances, but with excellent keeping from both sides in the first half the goals didn t come easily. The game was intense and 10 minutes before the end of the first half Truro stepped it up a gear and started to control the game. Ending the first half 2-2, the game was all to play for! The second half got under way and both teams were ready to get control of the game, Truro were tired and started making mistakes and college ensured they weren t going to miss these chances. The game was at a fast pace and high intensity but college did manage to come out on top, it was an unfortunate end to a very close game. Well Done Boys! Great Effort! 12 Sunday 15 th October- U14 Boys Hockey vs Duchy Our boys started off on the back foot, with Duchy hitting them hard and scoring a goal within the first 5 minutes. With the goal out of the way the remaining game time our boys maintained all the possession throughout. They had a number of opportunities one after the other and controlled the game with Duchy having all 11 players in their own half attempting to keep the ball out. With 10 minutes to go our boys finally found a gap where they were going to do nothing but ensure that ball hit net. The Score does not reflect the game and Duchy I imagine would be extremely happy ending the game with a draw. Well Done Boys! Miss Manley Sunday 15 th October- U12 Girls Hockey vs Duchy U12 girls played their first 7-a-side School Match vs Duchy Club. From the start the girls were excited to get playing and began the game with great energy, chasing down the ball right from the opposition s centre pass. The ball changed possession regularly with both Truro School and Duchy making good movement on the ball and making some good attempts at winning the ball cleanly. After the first quarter the girls decided to work on passing the ball wide and began to put that in to practice in the second quarter. A quick ball from a free hit taken by Duchy caught the U12 back line off guard and a well timed sweep put Duchy ahead by one goal going in to half time. The second half of the match saw Truro School win possession through great pressing on free hits and Duchy 16s. Lots of position changes and roll on roll off substitutions allowed the girls to try out different skills and both attacking and defending play. Momentum gathered and the home side found after a few good attempts at playing the ball around the defenders they could have a great chance at scoring. After some exciting play from both teams, Truro School on a 1 v 1 with the Duchy goal keeper equalised. Looking like scoring again in the final quarter but time running down saw the match conclude at 1-1. Well played girls. Miss Munn Tuesday 17 th October- U14 Girls vs Truro High School Draw 0-0 A great test for the girls playing a full pitch match before their county tournament coming up soon. We started off fairly strong and in the first half had a lot of the possession but just couldn't manage to score from set plays. I was really impressed with their positional play with some lovely passing and leading ahead. In the second half it was very tight with shots from both sides with some great saves by both goalkeepers. In the last minute a shot on goal was saved and we finished the match drawing 0-0. Lots of positives to take forward to the county tournament - well done girls! Mrs Wyatt Wednesday 18 th October- U12 Girls vs Mounts Bay- 0-8 loss U12 girls played their first fixture against a strong Mounts Bay side. The game was of a good pace and Truro School demonstrated a good understanding of the rules of Hockey. Despite the goals against them they held their momentum and made runs into the Mounts Bay defensive circle but sadly did not manage to capitalise on their attacking play. Miss Munn Wednesday 18 th October- U13 Girls vs Mounts Bay- 3-3 The U13's, missing captain Evelyn and defender Madi, played well in a closely contested fixture against Mounts Bay this week. With end to end action the game was fast paced and it was great to see the girls trying to put recent training regarding utilising the wings, driving towards the base line and crossing in strong to the attacking D into practise. The newly practised short corners due to absence of players seemed to work well too. The final score was 3-3 and a good reflection of the closely matched game...the girls did feel a little aggrevied that the goal scored just a fraction of a second after the final whistle, was quite rightly, disallowed however! Further practice on being proactive in defence further up the field and making the tackle outside of the D will take place after the half term and I am looking forward to another half term of hockey playing.
