T determine the abundance and sizes f crabs present in the San Francisc area. T determine the presence f crab larvae. T sample area B2 fr the cean shrimp Pandalus jrdani. Results: Trawling fr crabs was cnducted at 27 f the 57 randmly selected statins. Gale winds and high seas cmpletely hampered peratins. All crab statins nrth f Pint Reyes and 17 statins in the Gulf f the Farallnes were nt visited. The shrimp survey scheduled fr area B2 (Bdega regin) was nt cnducted. A snag in an area apprximately 2.5 miles west f the Duxbury Reef Buy resulted in the lss f a cmplete trawling rig (net drs and bridles). The 26 drags cmpleted prduced a ttal f 45 crabs (19 males 26 females). Twelve crabs (5 males 7 females) were f the 1966 class. Only tw legal crabs were caught. A list f thse statins prducing crabs and their respective sizes can be fund in Table. Several changes were made in the fishing gear in an effrt t imprve the crab catch. The net was fished with and withut a tickler chain attached between the drs. The amunt f chain n the ft rpe was increased. Our results (45 crabs) d nt indicate that the gear is fish ing efficiently fr crabs. t seems that there shuld be mre crabs in a ne-half mile stretch than ur average f 1.7 crabs per drag shws.

2 -2 Fishermen have lng maintained as many f us have seen that an impending strm des have a direct effect n many marine rganisms. Smehw they sense the n-cming turbulence lng befre it arrives. Burrwers will dig deeper. Attached animals (e.g. abalnes) adhere mre tightly t their substrate. Spiny lbsters will mve ffshre seeking deeper water. Crabs t might be capable f sensing the strm and have tw bvius means f reacting. They culd mve ffshre t deeper water as des the spiny lbster r they culd bury themselves in the substrate. Either means wuld make them less available in the area we were fishing and t ur gear. Perhaps this wuld accunt fr the pr crab catches. Planktn tws were made at the fllwing statins: and V-04 (see Figures and ). Statin V-04 (Drakes Bay) had a relatively higher density f crab larvae than did the ther tw statins. All crab larvae were first-stage zea. Many cincidental species were caught during trawling. A cmplete list f all animals caught n the cruise is given in Table. Persnnel: R. B.
