2 Executive Summary More formally known as Rancho Los Alamos de Santa Elena, this truly unique property was established in1829 as part of a 48,803 acre rancho from the Mexican Land Grant. Today, the ranch consists of 99 +/- acres that encompasses the original adobe residence built in 1830 that served as the headquarters for Rancho Los Alamos and the residence of its founder. Additionally, the ranch boasts a second residence, beautiful grounds with expansive lawns, four large outdoor fountains, a barbeque and outdoors entertainment area, grape arbor, sports courts, steel cattle corrals, and equine facilities. There are about fifty acres of prime irrigated farm land that is currently leased to an international seed company for growing vegetables and other seed crops. Approximately 35 acres of native pasture rises above the headquarters to afford privacy, and provides pasture for grazing horses and cattle. A long, gated private driveway leads up to the headquarters. Lovingly maintained and classically upgraded with modern conveniences during the 180+ year life of the adobe structure, the hacienda serves as the main residence with three bedrooms, three and one-half baths. The four working fireplaces throughout the hacienda provided the original source of heat and still provide warmth and cheer, but today heat is provided by a modern forced air/gas system. A new septic system was installed in The second residence, with three bedrooms and three baths, was built in 1968 and was tastefully designed to complement the Old World charm of the original adobe hacienda. Additionally, there is a garage, shop, and equipment building. Equine facilities include a six stall barn, two tack rooms, riding arena and a pole barn for hay storage. Water for the residences and livestock is provided through a domestic well and a gravity flow system that includes two 15,000 gallon Danish underground cisterns. Irrigation water is from a well tested at 500+/- gallons per minute, and is distributed throughout the farming areas via underground mainlines. A new irrigation pump was installed in this well in 2016 that runs on natural gas. An unused reservoir is designed to capture water from an intermittent spring and for storage of irrigation water. Approximately 10 acres of the farm ground is certified as organic.

3 Early History of Rancho Los Alamos de Santa Elena Rancho Los Alamos is an exceptional opportunity to actually experience the true remnants of the Old Californio lifestyle in today s frantic world. The hacienda at Rancho Los Alamos was established by Don Jose Antonio de la Guerra y Carrillo in 1829, and remains today much as it was in those early times. Located on a small knoll overlooking the Los Alamos Valley, the hacienda was constructed of adobe bricks forming walls two feet thick. Today the hacienda is one of the few remaining habitable adobes from this era. Formally granted to Don Jose de la Guerra in 1839 by Governor Juan Alverado as one of the Mexican Land Grants, the rancho soon became one of the principal outposts of Mission La Purisima. Travelers going between missions long ago followed what is now Highway 135, which later became the route of the narrow gauge railroad. The hacienda was strategically situated on a knoll to overlook this route, enabling the family to see travelers approaching from a distance in either direction. Today this strategic location provides beautiful views up and down the bucolic Los Alamos Valley. Early occupants of the rancho still remain here today. A headstone located on the hill above the headquarters marks the final resting place of Guillermo de la Guerra de Ortega, the son of Don Jose de la Guerra, who was laid to rest there in Rancho Los Alamos is named in the National Register of Historic Places and is designated a National Historic Landmark. Neither of these designations restrict the private use of the property.

4 The Grounds of the Hacienda Life outside the hacienda is a true experience of peace and tranquility. Start the day with a warm cup of coffee under the 100 foot veranda along the front of the hacienda, and imagine the generations that have done so before you. As you walk into the courtyard, the fountain will soothe you with its song of a simpler time. A gentle breeze passing through the mature foliage beckons one to stroll through the picturesque grounds. Barbequing over a hot bed of red oak coals is a tradition said to have originated in the Los Alamos area. Life in the early days of Rancho Los Alamos often centered around outdoor cooking and the serving of grand meals under the cool shade of an overhead arbor. Today, the outdoor entertainment area includes a spacious barbeque pit to accommodate meals for large gatherings. Long picnic tables are protected by the comforting shade of overhead grape vines in the arbor above. An sprawling lawn area provides ample room for all types of family activities, while enjoying the aroma of oak wood smoke and barbeque.

5 The Grounds of the Hacienda Wandering the grounds of the hacienda, one can absorb the relaxed ambiance of the bygone era of Old Californio. Four mission style fountains are located throughout the rancho grounds in private courtyards and throughout the mature landscaping of sycamores, oaks and cactus. Enjoy the sweeping views of neighboring ranches and vineyards or watch the day s activities of your farm ground below. Night time is especially peaceful with a darkened sky filled with an astounding array of brightly lit stars, serenaded by the call of nearby owls.

6 Inside the Hacienda According to the National Park Service survey of historic sites, Rancho Los Alamos is probably the finest surviving example of the Mexican period traditional one-story adobe ranch house, and in its unaltered rural setting presents an admirable picture of ranch life in Mexican California. Remarkably, as structural enhancements and modern conveniences were added over the years, the Old World charm has never been pushed aside. In fact, comfort, convenience and style have never blended so well with Old World charm resulting in a comfortable home that preserves the historic rancho culture. Hospitality has been a tradition at Rancho Los Alamos for nearly two centuries. Families from afar would gather for lavish meals and entertainment, often lasting for several days. Today the simple but elegant architectural features continue to provide the comfortable and relaxed ambience for entertaining, or just enjoying a quiet time at home. The original occupants were not afforded such luxuries as indoor plumbing, utilities, and modern heating. Fireplaces were the only source of heating in the early days, and today there remains four wood burning fireplaces throughout the hacienda.

7 At Rest Inside the Hacienda Upon entering the hacienda, one is immediately transported back in time by the original design of dwelling. The three bedrooms in the hacienda are cozy and exude a comforting sense of warmth. Two of the bedrooms feature wood burning fireplaces. Central heating has since been added to replace the fireplace as the main source of warmth at night, but the warm glow of a bedside fireplace cannot be replaced. Other modern additions to the hacienda include three and a half bathrooms, one attached to each of the bedrooms with an additional half bath in the entertainment area. Another intriguing characteristic of homes from this era is that all bedrooms access the exterior veranda along the front of the hacienda. Hand carved wooden doors transport you through the two foot thick adobe walls to the splendor of the grounds surrounding the veranda. Later additions to the bedrooms include French doors to the rear of the hacienda that provide ample natural light and access to the verdant surrounds and a large fountain in the grounds behind the hacienda.

8 The Second Home on Rancho Los Alamos Calling this a second home is somewhat a misnomer, unless you are only speaking chronologically. Built in 1968, the second home is beautifully designed to complement the Old World feel of the hacienda, but to provide modern living convenience. The expansive great room includes the living room with a fireplace, and the dining area. Large paned windows offer vistas of the Rancho Los Alamos farmland below, and beyond to the Los Alamos Valley vineyards and ranches to the west. The second home features three bedrooms and three baths, the ranch office, and a modest kitchen. Natural gas is provided to both homes. Water is delivered from a dedicated domestic well to two 15,000 gallon underground Danish cisterns located on the hill above the headquarters providing a gravity flow system to the residences below. A sports court and an expansive lawn area is located near the second home.

9 Horses and Cattle on the Rancho Livestock have always been the mainstay at Rancho Los Alamos. Cattle were the lifeblood of the early economy in early rancho days, and horses were utilized to work the cattle. Horses were also the only transportation available for nearly a century at Rancho Los Alamos. The early Californio vaqueros are heralded as some of the finest horsemen in the history of mankind. Many avid equine enthusiasts still follow the esteemed ways of the vaqueros of Old Californio, and there is no better place to do that than the headquarters of Rancho Los Alamos. Today, Rancho Los Alamos features a six stall barn with two tack rooms, a pole barn for storing hay, and a riding arena for perfecting the old time skills. Paddocks, holding pens and steel corrals enhance the usability of the livestock facilities. Both cattle and horses are grazed on the native pasture above the headquarters. The property avails itself for potential roping arenas, show rings, covered arenas or whatever improvements you would desire to make your equestrian visions a reality.

10 Agriculture Today at Rancho Los Alamos Agriculture has changed substantially over the course the 180+ year history of Rancho Los Alamos. Instead of cattle, today the mainstay of the local agricultural economy is premium wine grapes and irrigated row crops. Approximately 50 acres of irrigated farm ground are currently leased to an international seed company that grows vegetable seed crops. About ten acres of these 50 acres are certified as organic growing ground. Other irrigated row crops in the area include vegetables, flower seeds, and cane berries, such as raspberries and blackberries. A dedicated irrigation well produces 500 +/- gallons per minute. An underground, pressurized mainline system distributes irrigation water through the farming area. An unused reservoir is located adjacent to the farm ground, that was originally constructed to capture and hold the water from a natural spring located just below the hacienda, which in the old days provided water to the occupants of Rancho Los Alamos. The soil map and table at the left shows the quality soils located on Rancho Los Alamos. The farm ground is primarily composed of Salinas silty clay loam and Camarillo sandy loam. The emerging economic mainstay of the Los Alamos Valley has become premium wine grapes. Because of the east/west orientation of the Los Alamos Valley, warm summer days are tempered by a prevailing westerly wind coming from the Pacific Ocean. This also produces cool evenings, even during the hottest times of the year. Together with the fertile soils of the locale, Los Alamos Valley has become known as a prime region for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. There are a number of vineyards east and west of Rancho Los Alamos, as well as the Kendall Jackson vineyard to the north across Hwy 135. In addition to planting vineyards on the 50 +/- acres of farm ground, additional plantable ground is available on the gently sloping portion of grazing area behind the headquarters.

11 The town of Los Alamos is located between Los Angeles and San Francisco on Highway 101. Santa Ynez, Los Olivos, and Solvang are a short fifteen minute drive to the south, and Santa Barbara is an hour drive away. The town of Los Alamos was carved out of a piece of Rancho Los Alamos in Today, it is a small sleepy town with only about two thousand inhabitants. However Los Alamos has recently undergone a renaissance seeing several new fine restaurants, wine tasting establishments, hotels, art galleries and antique shops come into town. Rancho Los Alamos is located about three miles west of the town of Los Alamos on Highway 135. Los Alamos is Spanish for cottonwood trees, which grow along San Antonio Creek. The Los Alamos Valley runs east and west, with San Antonio Creek flowing along Highway 135 until it reaches the Pacific Ocean 17 miles to the west. The prevailing westerly wind coming up the valley from the ocean provides a very comfortable moderate climate.
