1 Presidents monthly message We are coming into November, which means two scary times of the year: Halloween and elections! At different times this months, there have been limits of yellowfin tuna, limits of bluefin tuna, and limits on yellowtail on the 3/4 Day boats. 200 lb Bluefin and 250 lb. Yellowfin have been taken within 30 miles of Oceanside this month, so if you're not fishing, you're missing out! It's time to get out on the water and get your line wet. Elections for officers of the OSA Fishing Club will be held at the November 7th meeting. Be sure you are there to make your vote count. This meeting will help determine the future of our club for , so it is important that you be a participant and not just a by-stander. Anyone thinking about going on a long-range trip should talk to John DeWitt about the trip he put together to Guadalupe Island for 8 OSA members on the Vagabond with Captain Mike Lackey. We had the best yellowtail fishing I have ever experienced. The five fish I had processed in San Diego were 32, 33, 37, 38, and 39 pounds. There were another fifteen yellowtail on board that were bigger than that! We also got into lb. Yellowfin tuna on the trip. Because of the ecological rules at Guadalupe, we couldn't keep the Calico Bass, but there were at least 15 of those caught that were over 6 pounds (incidental catches when targeting Yellowtail.) Biggest problem were the very large (16 to 18 ft.) Great White Sharks that just loved being next to our boat. 3 Charter Master s report I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and may you all be blessed with great family dinners. I have been talking with some boat owners about our offshore charters for this coming year. I assure you that in this coming year we will have more 1.5 day charters. I have set some offseason charters for Rock-Cod fishing. Now my biggest hurdle is finding a ¾ and ½ boat for our charters. This is the time that I would like your suggestions on what you would like in as far as charters go, so please call, or come up to me at the next meeting with your suggestions. After our December s club meeting I will be having our Charter Master s training course along with our yearly CPR & AED course which will be conducted be our very own Marshall Goddard and Peter Rohrich. You must sign-up with Marshall Goddard and pay a $20 fee for the course. If you re selected as a Charter Master I will be asking that the Board to pay you back for the course as always. We are starting our offseason charters with a Rock-Cod charter in December. This will close out the 2017 year fishing Rock-Cod here in California. This charter will depart on Wednesday December 13 th at 6:00 PM from Point Loma Landing aboard the Dominator and will be fishing at San Clemente Island. This load is limited to 18 Anglers and the cost is $336. Yes there were some changes to this charter since the last newsletter. The Charter Master will be Marshall Goddard you can call him at (760) or sign-up at our November 7 th meeting. Then we have a January charter opened, that charter is scheduled to depart on Wednesday January 17 th at 6:00 PM aboard the Dominator. Scheduled for the Colonet area, the cost is $402 limited to 18 Anglers, Passport is required. You can call Charter Master Peter Rohrich at , or again at the November 7 th meeting. Both of these charters are open to friends and family. At the November meeting I am hoping to present our offseason schedule. 4 Conservation The Pacific Gyre The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific trash vortex, spans waters from the West Coast of North America to Japan. The patch is actually comprised of the Western Garbage Patch, located near Japan, and the Eastern Garbage Patch, located between the U.S. states of Hawaii and California. No one knows how much debris makes up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre is too large for scientists to trawl. In addition, not all trash floats on the surface. Denser debris can sink centimeters or even several meters beneath the surface, making the vortex s area nearly impossible to measure. About 80% of the debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch comes from landbased activities in North America and Asia. Trash from the coast of North America takes about six years to reach the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, while trash from Japan and other Asian countries takes about a year. The remaining 20% of debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch comes from boaters, offshore oil rigs, and large cargo ships that dump or lose debris directly into the water. The majority of this debris about 705,000 tons is fishing nets. More unusual items, such as computer monitors and LEGOs, come from dropped shipping containers. The amount of debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch accumulates because much of it is not biodegradable. Many plastics, for instance, do not wear down; they simply break into tinier and tinier pieces. For many people, the idea of a garbage patch conjures up images of an island of trash floating on the ocean. In reality, these patches are almost entirely made up of tiny bits of plastic, called microplastics. Microplastics can t always be seen by the naked eye. Even satellite imagery doesn t show a giant patch of garbage. The microplastics of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch can simply make the water look like a cloudy soup. This soup is intermixed with larger items, such as fishing gear and shoes. Remember OSA, do your part, recycle your used line and dispose of all plastics properly. Bo Bolender, Conservation

5 On the Social Side... After the October meeting, we had 18 members go to lunch at the historic, since 1928, 101 Café. Thanks to Doug Morrison for making the contact with the owners for our gift certificate. Unfortunately several winners names were drawn at the end of the meeting, but they had left early, and lost out on the free meals. There was no picnic in October but Greg Thompson led our October field trip to the Hubbs SeaWorld hatchery on the Agua Hacienda Lagoon. Very informative. They do great work down there. We anglers appreciate the research they do and the release of thousands of raised fish into our ecosystem. 7 November Guest Speaker Our speaker this month will be local and long time fisherman, Captain Joe Cacciola. Captain Joe will be talking about his boat, The Sea Star, and its imminent movement to a new berth in Oceanside Harbor. The Sea Star is the boat we prefer for our Anglers for Kids trips and Anglers for Servicemen trips. Don't miss this chance to talk to a local fishing legend.
