3 J U LY T H E P R E S E R V E PA G E 3 THE HEAT IS ON After a cool, wet spring that didn t seem so long ago we ve transitioned right into the heart of summer. The last few days and the near future will be in the mid to upper 90 s. This intense heat puts tremendous stress on the cool season grasses. And all those caring for it. The Transition Zone The mid-atlantic region is a difficult region in the US for maintaining cool season golf courses. Summers intense heat and sometimes soaking thunderstorms can cause a double threat to this lowly cut bentgrass. Bent likes soil temps in the degree range, 4-6 hours daily minimum of sunlight, and drier conditions to optimally perform. Outside those parameters even with good cultural practices and proper nutrition it may struggle during these summers. Shivering, Soaking, Spring The very unusual weather to start the year brought very cool, cloudy conditions, and soaking rains well into late spring, early summer. What this did is effectively shrunk the normal root and shoot growing window superintendents have to help get through the summer. Striving for long deep roots heading into July and August is always the goal as the plant has more surface area down deep to catch water, oxygen, and nutrients. This gives the plants a better ability to combat the high heat and humidity typical in this region. Adaptability Talking with numerous supers, sales reps, and consultants many have noticed a reduction in root growth this season and areas are quickly drying out. Lower, flatter areas were even harder hit as the heavy rains coupled with stretches of cloudy weather allowed water to stick around longer than desired. With a much smaller tank(root length) we will be required to fill it more often. Shorter durations between nutritional sprays, and more syringing to cool the plant will be required during this hot weather. Cool It My staff and I will always do our best to stay out of your way and not impede on your round of golf. When the grass begins to wilt in this heat it s imperative we have a chance to cool it down. With greens, we water using hoses, hitting only what needs cooling off. The sprinklers water evenly on a flat surface, but with our many contours consistent use will cause low areas to receive excess while mounds and humps not enough. 6 J U LY T H E P R E S E R V E PA G E 6 Ladies 9 and Dine It looked like there was a possibility for rain to get in the way of our Vegas Scramble themed Ladies 9 and Dine, but after a few sprinkles as we were getting started the weather held off for everyone to complete their round. There were some fun and different themes or skills for different holes, such as rolling dice on #2 to see which tee box would be used, or if everyone teed off from the black tees on #8 you could subtract two strokes from your score. Afterwards everyone enjoyed some cocktails and a nice dinner, along with some singing and Floss dancing. 1st Place- Lynn Talbot, Amy Renninger, MJ Ormsbee, and Monica Anthevelli 2nd Place- Barb Cox, Cat Colby, Amanda Bielski, and Allie Robertson 3rd Place- Marie Latoff, Michelle Caba, Leslie Little, and Gina Glancy Colby s rule of the month rule 14-5 Playing moving ball by Jamie Komancheck, PGA Head Golf Professional A few weeks back Colby surprised me for Father s Day and planned a family day at the beach in Sea Isle City, New Jersey. I was instructed to pack the car up bright and early so we d get down there in time to get one of Colby s favorite cinnamon buns from Mrs. Brizzle s. After eating one of the massive buns with extra icing, it is very easy to park your bottom in a beach chair for a few hours. It was a fun and relaxing way to spend the day.that is until I was challenged to a game of mini golf (with a large Rita s water ice going to the winner!) As Colby has progressed as a golfer over the years, he has taken great delight in racking up wins over his mother and me on various mini golf courses (it s a little easier to win when you take a few liberties with mulligans.) But since it was Father s Day we would be playing be the official Rules of Golf. And nowhere in the rule book did we find the allowance of mulligans! Colby didn t seem to be bothered, No worries Dad, I have another secret weapon up my sleeve should I need to use it! The match was very close in the early going. Colby putted very well and I was trailing by one stroke through 5 holes. The 6th hole at Pirate s Cove golf course is a challenging straightaway par 2, measuring 11 yards in distance. The hole is cut on a small plateau with a slope defending short putts, and a collection area to the right for any putts that carom off the nearby rock outcropping. Colby had the honor and played a decent first putt that ended up a few feet to the left of the hole, safely on the plateau. I narrowly missed a hole-in-one, and tapped in for an easy par. Colby s second putt slid by the edge of the hole and went just a bit too far, catching the slope to the right heading down into the collection area. He gave his third putt a little extra effort and sent it up onto the plateau where it went racing past the hole and ricocheted off the rock outcropping back towards the slope on the right. The ball still in motion caught the slope and started to roll back down. Before the ball could get back to the bottom of the collection area, Colby hit the still rolling ball sending it into the hole. He laughed and said, That s a four! Whoa, whoa, whoa! I told him that was against the rules. Oh Dad! Weren t you watching the U.S. Open yesterday at Shinnecock? Didn t you see Phil Mickelson running like Forest Gump after his putt on Hole #13? Run Phil, Run! Colby continued, His putt was moving just like mine. I then informed Colby that the USGA applied Rule 14-5 Playing Moving Ball which states a player must not make a stroke at his ball while it is moving. Breach of the rule is a two stroke penalty. They could also have gone with Rule 1-2 which states a player must not take an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play. Breach of that rule is also two strokes, but if it s serious it can be disqualification. Colby s eyes got wide when I mentioned that. I told Colby, Since its Father s Day I ll look the other way (just like the USGA) and give you a two stroke penalty, and mark you down for a six. You re now down three strokes! He didn t like my ruling, but preferred it over disqualification. Colby was a little shaken after that, and I played pretty well the rest of the way for an easy victory! After the round we talked about the controversial ruling and the different opinions people had on it. In the end I told Colby that golf is a game of integrity, and to always try and do what s right. And doing what s right means.going and buying me a large Rita s water ice on Father s Day!

7 J U LY T H E P R E S E R V E PA G E 7 GOLF ACADEMY NEWS with Brian Moose DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION COMBAT BREATHING TECHNIQUE FOR MORE RELAXED GOLF UNDER PRESSURE WHEN YOU RE FEELING NERVOUS FROM FEAR OF LOSING, FEAR OF NOT PLAYING WELL, FEAR OF HITTING A BAD SHOT OR FEAR OF EMBARRASSMENT ETC., YOU PROBABLY NOTICE CERTAIN CHANGES IN YOUR BODY AND MIND WHICH INHIBITS YOUR ABILITY TO PLAY YOUR NORMAL GAME. The reason is that your body is in what s called the stress or fight or flight response. The hormone adrenaline is secreted by the adrenal glands which results in: Increased muscle tension Increased blood and energy in the muscles (shaking) Loss of cognitive function (poor thinking and decision making). This is obviously not conducive to playing your best golf! To reduce the effects of the stress response and the additional adrenaline in your system, we need to steady the ship and tell our brains that everything is OK. The best way to do this is by using powerful breathing techniques for golf. When I learned how to breathe, I learned how to win. Tom Watson THE COMBAT BREATHING TECHNIQUE The Combat breathing technique (also known as the box breathing technique ) is used by the Armed forces and Emergency Response personnel to deal with the effects of increased adrenaline in combat and emergency situations. It s very simple and here s how to do it. 1. Inhale to the count of 4 (through your nose) 4. Hold your breath for a count of 4 2. Hold your breath for a count of 4 5. Repeat over and over again 3. Exhale for a count 4 (through your mouth) Many successful public speakers, athletes, theater actors etc, will use powerful breathing techniques such as this to reduce the shakes, lower tension and regain control of thinking and ensure a good performance. Next time you re in a tournament or you feel nervous on the golf course, try the combat breathing technique along with good body language and you ll see the stress and nervousness melt away. ONE DAY GOLF SCHOOLS - AUGUST 18TH The school will offer instruction and how to develop practice habits to see your game flourish. The One Day Golf School will take place at the Golf Academy and all technologies will be used during the school. All areas of the game will be covered including but not limited to putting, chipping, bunker, trouble shots, mental approach, and full swing. The cost for the One Day Golf School is $250 per person. 4 people per school. SCHEDULE 8:15 am-short game instruction 10:30 am-full swing instruction including practice habits 12:30 pm-lunch 2:00 pm-play 9 holes with on-course instruction 5:00 pm-concludes with feedback for further development
