1 2018 DELTA DENTAL STATE OPEN OF VIRGINIA AUGUST 2018 The 2018 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia was claimed by Salem-native Fielding Brewbaker, who fired rounds of for a tournament total of 204 (12 under par). His final round featured eight birdies! Fielding is a familiar face to many at Ballyhack Golf Club. Ballyhack and Titleist were his initial sponsors upon turning pro in The win was an especially exciting one for Fielding: Emotionally, it s the peak, he said. I mean, backyard, hometown, mom and dad, in-laws, wife, baby, friends, other family. Playing in Tour events is really cool. I ve done it a few times. But I didn t win them. But this, emotionally, winning it, it s up there at the top of the peak, for sure. About Ballyhack he added an appreciation for the course as well as the staff and members. I ve always felt like I m welcomed out here, said Fielding. Everybody out here is so awesome. Ballyhack s members and fans were treated to unusually low scoring during Saturday s final round with 31 players breaking par and two holes-in-one. No one, though, topped Ballyhack Member Justin Young s sparkling course record of 63 strokes! Justin carded nine birdies (six on the back nine) and zero bogeys. His total of 205 finished one shot behind Fielding, yet earned him the honor of being the open s low amateur. I can t really describe it, said Justin when asked about his back nine. It s not something that when you re in the moment you can figure out. When it happens, you ve just got to hop on and ride it. He later added, The greens were rolling just absolutely perfect. Fielding Brewbaker Interviews conducted by Chris Lang of the Virginia State Golf Association Justin Young 2018 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS Two days of spectacular golf and camaraderie were enjoyed by Ballyhack members during the 2018 Club Championship on July 7 th and 8 th. Congratulations to Mike Krulich on becoming the 2018 Club Champion and earning a spot in the 2018 Delta Dental State Open of Virginia. Kudos to Kris Myers as well on winning the star flight. GOLF TIP: HOW TO MASTER TEMPO HEAD PROFESSIONAL SHANE LESTER, PGA Tempo is important with all shots in golf. Too often I see golfers (and I m guilty of this myself) forgetting about tempo in the short game. Any time we rush the transition on a chip, sand shot, or putt, the result is inconsistency. One of the keys to having a decent short game is being able to consistently hit the ball the correct distance. If tempo varies each time we conduct a short game shot, so will the distance the ball travels. The bottom line? Create a consistent tempo on all short game shots for consistent results. To practice, stop by the pro shop and try the Orange Whip Wedge, a training aid that helps you feel tempo in your short game.

2 PROJECT UPDATES Maintenance Facility Update Construction is going very well on the new maintenance facility. The concrete slab for the building s foundation has been poured. The contractors have started organizing and placing the steel in designated areas, which will be used for the building s structure. Erecting the actual building is now underway! Ballyhack Silo Renovation With the help of Franklin Silo Repair of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, permanent tops have been reattached to Ballyhack s famed silos. The result is magnificent and brings one back to the days when these very silos were used on the Saul family farm. Capping the brick structures will lengthen their lifespan and ensure their place with the club for many years to come. Employee Of The Month: Christy Phillips We are especially excited to announce Christy Phillips as Ballyhack s June employee of the month! Christy works alongside Steven Ball as a crucial part of Ballyhack s golf course maintenance team. Her great attitude and passion for everything she does embody the culture of the club. As noted by the individual who nominated her: Christy pushes the other team members to work harder and always goes the extra mile to get the job done. ON THE COURSE Many people have wondered why Ballyhack s course maintenance team uses hand watering techniques during dry and hot stretches of the summer when the club owns a state-of-the-art irrigation system. While irrigation systems of the modern era are much more advanced than previous years, we still end up with wet areas and dry areas when running the overhead irrigation sprinklers at night. The typical irrigation head covers 8,000 square feet; often times, we are only hitting 100 to 200 square feet within that irrigation head s coverage with water from a hose. Hand watering allows us to more precisely manage the spots where the soil needs moisture. Managing these locations improves course playability and plant health, while also conserving water and energy. Great moisture management promotes plant health by reducing disease pressure, improving summer stress tolerance, and bettering root mass. Our goal at Ballyhack is to provide firm conditions that allow for drives to roll out and reward good iron shots. We can keep our playing surfaces uniformly hydrated and firm by supplementing water with a hose where needed. As always, please let me know if you have any questions regarding our turf practices. Sincerely, Steven Ball FROM THE CLUBHOUSE: Sweet & Sour Pineapple Chicken A Summer Recipe From Executive Chef Andrew Terry 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 pounds boneless chicken, diced ⅓ cup pineapple juice 3 tablespoons ketchup 3 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon water 1 cup pineapple chunks, canned or fresh 1 cup jasmine rice, cooked according to package instructions* Sliced green onions, for serving (optional) Sliced almonds, for serving (optional) *For more flavor, substitute chicken stock for water. In a medium skillet over medium-low heat, sauté the garlic in olive oil until fragrant. Add the diced chicken and cook. Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, combine pineapple juice, ketchup, brown sugar, and rice wine vinegar and bring to a simmer. In a small bowl, combine the cornstarch with one tablespoon cold water to make a slurry. Add the slurry to the simmering sauce. Stir until incorporated, then add the sauce to the chicken. Let simmer for three minutes or until chicken is cooked through. Add the pineapple chunks just until heated, then remove from stove. To serve, portion the cooked rice into a serving bowl then add the chicken over top. Garnish with sliced green onions and sliced almonds.

3 2018 BALLYHACK MEMBER-GUEST INVITATIONAL THURSDAY AUGUST 16TH SATURDAY AUGUST 18TH REGISTRATION ENTRY FEE: $895 PER TEAM Team registration fee includes all food and beverages from 6:30 p.m. Thursday evening through Saturday, as well as event prizes, entertainment, guest fees, and gifts. FORMAT MODIFIED STABLEFORD The modified Stableford system allocates points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole with the goal of achieving the highest overall point total. Each player receives points on each hole based on gross score (point values below). Each team has a point quota based on handicap and adds the number of points accumulated over the round for a point total. This total is then compared to the team s point quota. The team that accumulates the most points over their quota wins. Double eagle 10 Points Par 2 Points Hole in one 8 Points Bogey 1 Point Eagle 6 Points Double bogey 0 Points Birdie 4 Points Other -1 Points Each player s course handicap is used to determine the quota. The team score will be calculated by adding the two players point totals together and comparing it to the team quota. Example: Player One (20 handicap): Quota 16 Points achieved 17 +/- +1 Player Two (12 handicap): Quota 24 Points achieved 20 +/- -4 Team Score -3 The modified Stableford system creates a risk-reward format by encouraging players to make the most out of every hole. The lowest possible quota for this event is 12 points, which is based on a maximum handicap of 24. This format is conducive to Ballyhack s authentic links-style course, and encourages a faster pace of play with triple bogey being the maximum score on any hole. The Stableford system was developed more than 100 years ago by Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford of Wales. His intention was to deter golfers from giving up after playing only one or two bad holes, a common occurrence during tournament play. It is also credited with significantly speeding up the pace of play.

4 DORMIE NETWORK NEWS UPDATES ON CAPITAL PROJECTS DORMIE CLUB HOSTS VGA SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP ArborLinks Cottage construction is underway at ArborLinks. This expansion will double the club s five cottages to 10. A clubhouse renovation and construction of an on-course comfort station are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. Dormie Club Dormie Club is currently in the planning stages of a new clubhouse and on-course comfort station. The club is finalizing plans for additional on-site lodging with groundbreaking coming soon. These investments are part of a larger vision to return the club to its original private concept by Briggs Ranch Golf Club A complete design for the clubhouse renovation has been laid out for Briggs Ranch. There are some really great changes in store with the renovation that will not only expand the existing space, but allow Dormie Network members to better utilize the entire clubhouse. The building sites for the casitas have been staked, and the project is expected to break ground very soon. The Dormie Network s namesake club hosted the Veteran Golfers Association for its annual Senior Championship on July 14 th and 15 th in Pinehurst.
