2 PAGE 2 THE MALLARD TIMES A MESSAGE FROM DAVE CRAIG, GM/COO I am going to take one last opportunity to be selfish and ask for everyone s participation in the Member Directory photo program. One of my personal goals is to be able to recognize and acknowledge all 500 plus CVGC members by sight, and to address you with proper respect as Mr. and Mrs. The member directory is invaluable to me and to our service team who will be provided the photos and names so that we can all help create a sense of membership and community here at CVGC. If you can imagine, I am trying to learn 500 faces and names while I try to forget and not be confused by the over 500 at the club I just left. We, as your service team, thank you for the cooperation many of you have shown to the program already, and we thank everyone else for acting on this request in the coming weeks. To make it easier for everyone, we are happy to provide the EA Photography program that we used in This is a great opportunity to help us complete this program and perhaps take that new headshot for business, family photo for your home or holiday cards, take that photo with your spouse for the home or office, or to send to your kids and grandchildren so they don t forget who you are. We are partnering with EA Photography this year, just as the club did back in This is a program that EA offers at no cost to the Club. They will take professional grade photos of you individually, as a couple, or as a family that we can use on our directory, and you will have a no obligation opportunity to purchase one of several packages they will make available. Please make every effort to find time to take advantage of this program so that we can provide our membership and operations teams with a completed membership directory for ease of recognition. As a bonus to the Club, if we can get at least 60% participation, EA will provide a printed directory to every rostered club member at no cost. The recommended attire is business but we are leaving that to your discretion and your needs. Individual photos can also be used for your social media sites and business needs. Thank you in advance for taking advantage of this opportunity and helping us to create a great sense of community here at CVGC. EA Photography will be here from June 6 through July 1. They can be reached by ing a requested day and time for your shoot at MyClub@eaclubs.com or by phone at By the same token, if you are NOT interested, please contact EA Photography using the same contact information above to let them know not to contact you for an appointment. EA Photography will be reaching out to you to make this process even easier. All contact information that we provide is protected under our contract and only for use for this specific endeavor. Thank you for your cooperation and participation! Dave Craig, GM/COO
3 PAGE 3 GREENS NEWS It s finally beginning to look like spring. Flowers are blooming, the grass is growing, and the golf course is lush. This might have happened later than expected when for a while we thought it wouldn t happen at all; but needless to say, routine maintenance is underway. Our turf nemesis (Annual Bluegrass Weevil) is on the prowl. We have been scouting to coordinate the timing of treatment methods for these insects. Don t be fooled by their name, as they have adapted to eating bent grass. These insects have proven to be a nuisance for us over the last couple of years, and are not going away. With limited control products on the market, it has been an ongoing battle to keep these pests at bay. Because of the limited available control products and their breeding habits, this pest alone has caused us to increase our spending over the last couple of years. In fact, it is the larvae that cause the most damage as you see pictured here to the right and have really been the only proven stage of the insect to maintain control. The size may not do justice, but the larvae themselves are smaller than a grain of rice. This is why it is important to scout for these pests so the timing of our applications is effective, due to the high cost of the products available for use. Because the growth habits of turf are alive and well, you will notice our tractor blowers out on the golf course cleaning up as we mow. We want to apologize in advance for any inconvenience, as we do not want to disturb anyone enjoying themselves on the golf course. We would like to take this opportunity to notify everyone that we have scheduled our walk through with Darin Bevard from the USGA for Thursday, June 7:00 a.m. off the first tee. Darin will be visiting for a half of a day and will be touring the golf course, to evaluate and discuss agronomics, course conditioning, and general turf maintenance. We welcome all who wish to attend to save the date. This is a prime opportunity to meet and talk with Darin about anything related to the golf course. Darin is highly knowledgeable in the rules of golf, tournament preparation, agronomics, and personal experience. We will start the morning at the Putting Green and tour each hole where we will stop intermittently to discuss random topics. We hope to see everyone then! Joel Bubbenmoyer, Golf Course Superintendent IT Security Tip Withdrawal Alerts... Here s a tip that just might save your bacon: Set up withdrawal alerts on your bank accounts. Many banks will send you an alert whenever money is withdrawn from your account via check, debit card, or transfer. Setting up those alerts will allow you to spot and report fraudulent activity BEFORE the money has already been siphoned into a cybercriminal s hands. Chester Valley Golf Club has proudly partnered with Jobecca Technology Group over the past decade for all the Club s IT needs. Watch for an upcoming workshop at the Club with Jobecca s professional staff so that you and your business can benefit from the same team that protects CVGC. Jim Angelucci, Controller
4 PAGE 4 COOKING WITH CHEF BEN Southern Peach Gazpacho Serves 6 Ingredients 6 to 8 soft to mushy peaches, peeled, pitted (half peach puree and the other half small dice) 1 medium cucumber, peeled, seeded and cut into small dice 1 small clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon champagne vinegar or white balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling 1/2 teaspoon coarse sea or kosher salt, or more to taste 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, or more to taste 1/2 to 3/4 cup water 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh cilantro or flatleaf parsley leaves Red bell pepper slices and peeled avocado slices, for garnish (optional) Steps Combine the peaches, cucumber, garlic, vinegar, oil, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, up to overnight. Just before serving, taste the soup and adjust the seasoning as needed. Stir in the cilantro or parsley. Divide among individual bowls. Drizzle each portion with a little oil. Garnish with the bell pepper and avocado, if desired. Serve right away. SPECIAL TIP: To peel peaches, score an X in the bottom of each fruit. Place in a large bowl of just-boiled or very hot water, just long enough for the skin on the bottom to release. Drain, and peel when cool enough to handle. Ben Hollinger, Executive Chef MEMBERSHIP NEWS Chester Valley will be hosting a Prospective Member Day on Saturday, June 9 th. The design of this Prospective Member Day will differ from those that have occurred in the past, in that it will allow the Prospective Members to determine how they would like to spend their day at Chester Valley. A select few Prospective Members have been invited to bring their spouses and families to the club to get a taste of what membership at Chester Valley provides. These individuals will be able to spend their day by the pool, playing tennis, or heading out for a round of golf later in the afternoon. The day will conclude with a cocktail hour in the grille room beginning at 5:30pm. If you have any friends or neighbors who have expressed an interest in joining the club, and you would like for them to receive an invite for our June 9 th Prospective Member Day, please send an to greg@cvgc.org with their contact information by June 6 th. Greg Scherbak, Membership Director
5 PAGE 5 THE MALLARD TIMES TENNIS NEWS Our Cup C ladies team is currently tied for first place, while our Cup A team is in third place in their respective divisions. Our Cup 1 team continues to battle each week in the top division, despite some injuries and different lineups. Our mixed team had a nice 4-0 sweep of Waynesborough in their most recent match. Thankfully the rain held off for June Teufel's outing in loving memory of her grandson, Eric. Participants enjoyed tennis, golf, and a dinner to finish off the day. Our Junior Tennis Summer schedule is out now and the program will run from June 11th through the end of August. It s also not too late to sign up for our popular Junior Activities Camp. Please see the club s website or contact us at jpoletti@cvgc.org for more information! Coach s Corner: Hard Courts versus Clay Courts Hard courts suit aggressive players who play firststrike tennis. Serve & volleyers with powerful serves (think Pete Sampras) can end points quickly as the ball travels faster and bounces lower compared to clay courts. Clay court tennis is slower and produces longer rallies, as the ball bounces higher and slower. These conditions favor a more defensive style of play (think Rafael Nadal) where players can grind out points and wear down opponents since it's harder to hit through your opponent and put shots away. Finesse shots and heavy spins shots are very effective. Playing on clay courts is a great way to develop patience, hit a variety of shots, and construct points. Justin Poletti, Director of Racquet Sports POOL NEWS The Chester Valley pool is open! Please note our limited weekday hours below for the beginning of June. 6 PAGE 6 THE MALLARD TIMES GOLF NEWS For many golfers Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the golf season. The weather is warm and a bit more consistent, and the longer days mark an opportunity to play a quick nine after work, or practice at the range or short game area. As you plan your golf for June please take an opportunity to look at the club calendar for some great events. Parent child events and Twilight golf offer great opportunities to play golf when time is short. This is a great time of year to entertain family, friends and clients. If you would like to use the club to entertain more than the traditional three guests, we can make that happen! Golf is a fantastic vehicle for building relationships, both personally and professionally, and we can help structure a fun day filled with golf, food, and the beautiful backdrop of our golf course. Please inquire with the professional staff if you have an interest in such a day. Finally, I am pleased to announce we have hired Jenna Soranno as a PGA Assistant Professional. Jenna will join the staff in June, and will compliment the excellent staff we have currently. She is a graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University with dual degrees in PGM (Pro Golf Management) and Paralegal Studies. She is a resident of Blue Bell, and very excited to begin her career in golf. Jonathan Doctor, Head Golf Professional EA PHOTOGRAPHY EA Photography will be at Chester Valley beginning June 6th. As part of our Membership Recognition Program, this provides a great opportunity to enhance the club experience and provide more personalized service to our membership. Not only will this aid in the completion of the Membership Directory, it is also a great opportunity for an updated business headshot or new family photos! To receive priority appointments, please contact EA Photography via at MyClub@eaclubs.com or by phone at If you are not interested in participating, please or call EA Photography and you will not be contacted for an appointment. How many gallons of water does it take to fill up the Chester Valley pool? TRIVIA CORNER Send your answer to Ashley at abreznicky@cvgc.org no later than Tuesday, June 19th at 5:00 pm.
