1 Village Crier Volume 7 Issue 1 January and February Golfview Drive Medford, NJ Main Office: Golf Shop: Fax: Clubhouse Renovation Dear Members, We are excited to inform you of the planned renovation to our clubhouse: a new gabled roof will be built over our existing structure, a complete reconstruction of our lobby, and a new facade on the front side of our clubhouse is scheduled. Here is some information that may impact your use of the clubhouse: Start date is January 19, six-eight week construction period Women s locker room may have limited or no access for period of time Restaurant and bar service will be suspended until new roof is fully installed Regular food & beverage operation is expected to resume by the end of February (no food minimum) Golf course will remain open, weather permitting Golf Shop and Office may be closed for a short phase of the construction (5-10 days) Among other issues and disruptions that may arise, weather will play a major role in the completion timeline of this project. We want thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation during this period. Look for our s to keep you informed. As always, you are welcome to contact us if you have any questions. Once completed, our clubhouse will have great curb appeal and a fantastic first impression. We believe this will give you another reason and pride to belong to Medford Village Country Club. Women s Wednesday evening league and Men s Thursday night leagues were outstanding, including partaking in the our dining service. The energy and enthusiasm was exceptional, and there is always room for more members. Come join the fun! In the upcoming months, I hope to transition out of the Head Golf Professional role and duties. The current plan is to have the position of Head PGA Golf Professional filled by March 1, perhaps even sooner. The Golf Committee and Professional Staff will review and complete the 2017 tournament schedule. Please give us feedback on what you want to get out of your golfing experience to help in your enjoyment and use of the club. As we move through the construction phase of our renovation, the golf course remains accessible. At times however, some clubhouse services and facilities may be unavailable. Please read your clubs s for information and updates. I would like to take a moment to thank our PGA Golf Professional staff, Daniel Taylor, Dan Haskell, and apprentice Kevin Campbell, along with shop assistant Gary Witt and all of the outside service staff, for their service to our fantastic members. 6 The Culinary Corner Gary Miller, Executive Chef Vegetarian Chili Yield: 4-6 servings Ingredients 1½ tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 2 cups diced sweet onion (about 1 medium/large) 2 tablespoons minced garlic (about 4 large cloves) 2 jalapeños seeded, finely chopped (optional) 1 cup finely chopped celery (about 2 large stalks) 1 large red bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 (28 oz) can diced tomatoes, with juices 1 cup low-sodium vegetable broth 6 tablespoons tomato paste 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1 (15 oz) can pinto beans, drained and rinsed 2 tablespoons chili powder 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 teaspoon dried oregano ½ to ¾ teaspoon fine grain sea salt, to taste Directions In a large pot, sauté the onion and the garlic in the oil over medium heat until soft and translucent, about five minutes. Season with a pinch of salt and stir. Add the jalapeños, celery, and bell pepper and sauté for another five to seven minutes or so, until softened. Now add the can of diced tomatoes (with the juice), broth, and tomato paste. Stir to combine. Increase heat to medium-high. Add the drained and rinsed beans, along with the chili powder, cumin, oregano, and salt. Simmer the mixture, uncovered, until thickened, about ten to fifteen minutes. Add the cayenne and hot sauce to taste, if using. Taste and season with additional salt if desired. Serve with chopped green onion and cilantro leaves, if desired. If you have any ideas or comments, please contact me. If you have any suggestions for our Tournament Chair, contact Elaine Gaynor. Preparing for our WGAP team matches is important in the winter months. Any female golf member with a handicap index of 36 or better is eligible to play on one of our two WGAP teams. You must be a member of the Women s Golf Association of Philadelphia. Membership will open January 2 and close on March 10, Please sign up early so we don t have to hunt you down! The dates of team matches are April 25, April 28, May 2, May 5, and May 9. The schedule of matches will be available on the WGAP website by the time this article is published. In addition to team match eligibility, membership in WGAP provides players the ability to play at member clubs on open days and numerous tournaments which you can enter.
