Kayla Mortellaro Stroke Play Champion 2007 has been a good year for Kayla Mortellaro, a 17 year old high school senior and member of the WGA at Ahwatukee Country Club. As AWGA State Stroke Play Champion for the second time, she is continually proving her standing as a prominent golfer in Arizona. In 2004 at 14 years old, she was the youngest golfer to ever win the State Stroke Play. This year she captured the title again at Red Mountain Ranch Country Club with a three round total score of 214, six strokes lower than her nearest competitor. Kayla was also a member of the first Arizona team to win the USGA Women s State Team which was held in Houston in September. It was awesome, said Kayla. To win is such an honor. We all played with confidence and did our best to represent our state. In each of the three, 18-hole stroke play rounds, the two lowest scores by players from each team constitute the team score for each round. The 54-hole total is the team s score for the championship. Kayla s scores for the three days were for a total of 222. Kayla will be attending the University of Idaho beginning in the fall term of She earned a four year golf scholarship there and hopes to be one of their leading golfers on the school s team. After college, she hopes to become a professional golfer. Kayla says, There are so many variables that can happen between now and then. If everything works out right, I hope to be on the LPGA tour in a few years. Although she is extremely focused for someone her age, she still enjoys hanging out with her friends on weekends. I have a pretty normal life, she says. I m just like most other teenagers. Kayla may consider herself a typical teenager but in reality, she is far from it. She is a self-disciplined and self-confident athlete with goals that far exceed the status quo. Even at this point in her game, where she is considered an expert player, she is still trying to improve. If I can lower my score by just one or two strokes, it can make a huge difference in my game and my future, she says. There s no such thing as golfing for fun anymore. I generally play golf with a purpose. The stage is different now. And so it is. Kayla Mortellaro is not a budding champion. She is a champion. We ll be looking for Kayla, one of our home grown golf prodigies, in the line-up of women golf professionals in the not-too-distant future. Congratulations, Kayla, on your 2007 State Stroke Play and other victories. Barb Byrnes State Seniors Champion Over 10 years ago, Barb Byrnes retired from a successful business career to follow her desire to become a scratch golfer. Since then Barb s long list of accomplishments have proven to the golf community that she is a talented, energetic, determined competitor. Her love of golf has evolved into a motto - Share the Passion - which she eagerly imparts whenever the opportunity arises. As a dedicated advocate for women s golf and skilled player, she is often at the forefront of both administrative and competitive events. Going into the last round of the AWGA State Seniors Barb was five strokes behind Judy Miller, who was then at the top of the leaderboard and defending Champion. Shortly into the final round Barb regained her focus and her game turned around. With a total score of 235 for three days, she came from behind and emerged as the Champion of the 2007 AWGA State Seniors. It was very exciting, Barb humbly says. It s been a long summer and fall for me and winning this event made me feel alive and connected again. Barb was also the 2004 and 2005 AWGA State Seniors Champion. Barb was chosen as one of the original members of the Arizona State Team along with Kayla Mortellaro and Tui Selvaratnam. But because of an accident in her family, she was not able to participate in the Houston event. That was a huge disappointment for me, Barb says. It was the first time I made State Team and was looking forward to representing Arizona on a national level. As it was, our team played to perfection and came home with first place honors. Earning a place on the State Team was one of Barb s most rewarding accomplishments. In addition to her enthusiastic and continuous participation on the course, Barb is also an integral part of the AWGA leadership. As President of the Board of Directors, she has spearheaded the advancement of the association. This has been a great year for the AWGA, Barb says. We ve enjoyed many successes and seem to be generating excitement about women s golf in many venues. We re working more closely with our allied associations and we re seeing our number of new tournament players and members grow and benefit from the AWGA, she adds. The AWGA is now being recognized nationally among our peers for initiating innovative programs and for staff and volunteers that are second to none in the country. Golf has been good to Barb Byrnes and Barb Byrnes has been good for golf! Congratulations and Thanks to a Champion in every sense of the word - a forward-thinking and dedicated leader, a skilled player, a dedicated volunteer and a most spirited advocate for women s golf.

THINK GOOD THOUGHTS Golf is assuredly a mystifying game. It would seem that if a person has hit a golf ball correctly a thousand times, he should be able to duplicate the performance at will. But this is certainly not the case. ~ Bobby Jones

3 RULES TIP: Rule 28 Q A player deemed her ball unplayable and, under Rule 28c, dropped her ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay. The ball came to rest in the original position or another position at which the ball was unplayable. What is the ruling? A The ball was in play when it was dropped- Rule Thus, if the ball came to rest in the original position, the player must again invoke the unplayable ball Rule, incurring an additional penalty stroke, unless she decides to play the ball as it lies. The same applies if the ball came to rest in another position at which it was unplayable, assuming the ball did not roll into a position covered by Rule 20-2c, in which case redropping without penalty would be required. Rule 28 reads: The player may deem his ball unplayable at any place on the course except when the ball is in a water hazard. The player is the sole judge as to whether his ball is unplayable. If the player deems his ball to be unplayable, he must, under penalty of one stroke: a. Play a ball as nearly as possible at the spot from which the original ball was last played (see Rule 20-5); or b. Drop a ball behind the point where the ball lay, keeping that point directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped, with no limit to how far behind that point the ball may be dropped or c. Drop a ball within two club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay, but not nearer the hole. If the unplayable ball is in a bunker, the player may proceed under Clause a, b, or c. If he elects to proceed under Clause b or c, a ball must be dropped in the bunker. The ball may be lifted and cleaned when proceeding under this Rule. How many of us were given an opportunity to learn golf in high school? We would probably have lower handicaps right now if we had! Thanks to Title IX, there are approximately 2,000 girls golf scholarships available annually among the nation s NCAA colleges and universities. Promoting high school girls golf is good for the girls and good for the sport! If you don t use your AZ tax credit money for anything else, please consider supporting high school girls golf in Arizona by contacting your local high school and contributing to their program. You can take a dollar-for-dollar reduction on your Arizona State taxes (or receive an addition to your refund) and also reduce taxable income for your Federal tax return when you make this contribution ($200 per person or $400 per married couple.) Information about the program can be found at or you can call the Arizona Department of Revenue at (602) or toll free at (800) One high school that would graciously accept your donation is Horizon High School, 5601 E. 6 KERRY POSTILLION - RUNNER-UP AT USGA MID-AM CHAMPIONSHIP On September 29th through October 6th, Desert Forest was the place to be in women s golf. Kerry Postillion, a member of Desert Forest, had two previous runner-up finishes and was the only Arizona woman to make this year s quarter finals. As one of the final eight, she went into the competition with confidence and positive expectations. The match was all square at the end of the 17th hole. Unfortunately, the 18th hole caused Kerry some trouble as her attempt to shoot from a greenside bunker failed and led to a fourth shot that didn t make it back to the green. Her opponent, Meghan Bolger, putted to within a foot of the hole. Kerry conceded the last hole and the match. Kerry appreciated having local support and remarked that it was fun seeing people around pulling for her. Many women from her club came to watch on the last day. It s too bad I just couldn t get quite through that last hole. But Kerry has reason to be proud of her accomplishment at the US Women s Mid-Amateur. Congratulations to Kerry Postillion for a competition well played.
