1 Women s Metropolitan Golf Association TEE TALK Fall Knollwood Road Elmsford, New York TEL: (914) Beth Lankler, Editor 2015 Player of the Year: Dani Mullin Dani was born and raised on Long Island and started playing golf with her dad when she was just 4 years old. She entered her first WMGA tournaments at 13 and, in 2004, had her first WMGA Dani Mullin with her parents Arlene & Patrick victory when she and her father won the WMGA Father-Daughter Championship. Her success as a junior led to a scholarship offer at Elon University, a D1 NCAA program in North Carolina but an injury sidelined Dani from golf for a few years. She resumed playing in In 2014, highlights of Dani s accomplishments included winning the WMGA Stroke Play Championship, the LIGA s Stroke Play Championship at Bethpage Red with a 69-69, the WLIGA s Stroke Play Championship and being one of four players selected to represent the WMGA at the French/American Challenge held in Paris. For this year, Dani was again the WMGA Stroke Play Champion at Nassau CC, the low amateur at the Met PGA Women s Open, winner of the WMGA One Day Stroke play event at Huntington Crescent, and was selected for the LI Golf Illustrated and Griscom Cup teams. Dani also won the NYSGA Women s Mid Amateur Championship, and was selected to represent New York at the USGA Women s State Team Championship. She and Ellen Oswald qualified for the U.S. Women s Four-Ball Championship, and most recently, Dani made it to the round of 16 at the U.S. Women s Mid Amateur. Dani has decided to go all in with golf and this summer she qualified to play on the Symetra Tour. She plans to turn pro on November 10th. We wish her only the best on this new journey! Judy Bell Award Recipient: Kathy Dennis AKA: The Go To Girl for Long Island golf Kathy joined the WMGA in 1991 and served on the WMGA Board from 2000 through Her positions included: Long Island District Captain , Secretary 2005, VP of Publicity and Outreach 2006 and President Kathy also served as the Long Island Tournament Chair in 1998 and Kathy was the Chair of the WMGA Nominating Committee in 2010 and again served on the committee in Currently, she is a member of the USGA Regional Affairs Committee, President of Women s Cross Country Golf Association, and is the Rules and Representatives Chair of the Women s Long Island Golf Association. Kathy has been instrumental in ensuring that the WMGA Foundation is included as one of the charities in Long Island charity events. Her influence has led to significant contributions to our junior girls scholarship program. Way to go Kathy!

2 2015 Annual Meeting Lann Trophy co-winner: Dani Mullin with WMGA President, Val DePiro Bradley S. Klein, guest speaker The WMGA s 116th Annual meeting was held on Thursday, October 29 at Montclair Golf Club in New Jersey. This is the beginning of our second set of rotations through our districts; next year the meeting will be in Westchester/CT. It was a highly successful meeting and well attended by over 150 members, guests, award winners and honorees from New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester/CT. Award recipients included Interdistrict Champ, Meadow Brook; Board of Directors Cup winner, Hyun Sook Kang, as the player with lowest 18 hole gross score in Class B with a 91 in the Senior B Championship at Roxiticus Golf Club; Caroline Araskog and Dani Mullen as the co-joseph J. Lann Trophy recipients for scoring the lowest Class A gross score with 71s at the Stroke Play A Championship at Nassau; and finally, Dani, again, as the Player of the Year with 835 points. Congratulations to all for a fabulous season. The Judy Bell Award, presented to a person or organization that made significant contributions to women and/or juniors in the Metropolitan area, was awarded to Kathy Dennis of Bellport Country Club. Very impressive woman! Valerie DePiro, WMGA President, conducted the business portion of the meeting. Beth Post, Foundation Chair, reported on behalf of the Foundation. Bradley S. Klein was our guest speaker. Dr. Klein is one of the world s most distinguished scholars in the field of golf course design. He entertained us all with stories of course architecture and humorous insights into the game we all love. He also conducted a book signing of two of his seven books on golf architecture and history. For many, the event was not over as they took advantage of Montclair s hospitality and the clearing skies to play golf. A perfect finish! The day was a terrific tribute to the WMGA and we thank all of those who made it possible. This past year the Foundation was able to award $47, 700 to all scholarship recipients which included $1,000 per semester for a minimum of 2 years for the Class of 2015 recipients. Stella Oliver I was asked to have a Q & A with one of our very own special long time members [41 years]: Stella Oliver. But, if you ask her, she s not so special. I respectfully disagree! She s won 29 club championships, 19 at Knollwood Country Club beginning in 1974 through 2008 and 10 at her prior club, Sprain Valley Women s Golf Club. And, she still plays on her Met team! If you ask her... she s not really a great golfer because she doesn t have distance. But, she reluctantly concedes that she is consistent and hits the ball straight whereby earning her the nicknames, Pipeline Stella and The Machine Oh yeah and let s not forget to mention the 8 Holes-in-Ones! Her eighth occurring just this past October. As it was a windy day, she was only going to play nine with her friend Carol, but after finally finding her tee shot in the cup of the Par 3, 170 yds 8th hole at Knollwood, she looked at Carol and said, guess we have to play 18!
