1 Tee Talk Founded Knollwood Road Elmsford, NY (914) Michele Marcus, Editor Fall 2012 FRANCES GACOS Player of the Year This year s winner of the Women s Metropolitan Golf Association Player of the Year is Frances Gacos. The award was presented to Fran at the WMGA Annual Meeting at Baltusrol Golf Club on November 16th. The WMGA Player of the Year Award recognizes the member who competed in at least four WMGA tournaments and earned the most points in designated events during the season. Fran s achievements in WMGA tournaments include winning the Seniors A Championship and the Match Play Championship, as well as finishing tied for third in the Stroke Play Championship. Not only did Fran earn points through the many WMGA events, but she also received points as the winner of the Garden State Stroke Play Championship; runner up in the Garden State Round Robin; and qualifying and playing in the USGA Senior Women s Amateur Championship and the U.S. Women s Mid-Amateur Championship. Fran is a member at Copper Hill Country Club in Flemington, NJ. Fran Gacos with Player of the Year Trophy Judy Bell Award is presented to Helen Stovell Helen is one of those exceptional people who always says yes. She has served the Women s Met in every capacity for over twenty years. From Met Rep, Team Captain, Series Captain, Board Member, Nominating Chair, Helen has been an enthusiastic and dedicated advocate for the Women s Met. This year she is also working on the Critical Needs Committee. Helen and her daughter, Mimi, are two-time defending Mother-Daughter Champions. She is a 16-time Club Champion at the Country Club of Fairfield. Helen began taking golf lessons on her honeymoon in Bermuda so it is only fitting that she has been club Helen Stovell (left) receiving Judy Bell award from Beth Post champion at Mid Ocean. This year she qualified to play in the USGA Senior Amateur Championship. Helen says that her favorite part of her involvement with the WMGA is the number of wonderful people she has gotten to know through playing in the WMGA tournaments and her involvement with the WMGA Board. She is also happy that efforts have lead to a great WMGA board. Lann Trophy awarded to Ellen Oswald Ellen Oswald holding the NY State Amateur trophy. Ellen is a talented young player who was a standout at St John s University where she was a four year Academic All American and captain in her senior year. The Lann Trophy is awarded to the individual who has the lowest gross score in a stroke play event. Ellen achieved this by shooting a 69 at the two day stroke play championship at Rockaway Hunting. She also won the Father-Daughter tournament this year. She is currently the New York State Champion. Ellen is constantly working on her game to reach the highest status in amateur play.
2 2012 Annual Meeting Super Storm Sandy forces rescheduling of 2012 Annual Meeting For the first year, the Annual Meeting was held at a member club, Baltusrol Golf Club, in Springfield, NJ. Over 200 members were originally scheduled to attend; however, uninvited guest, Super Storm Sandy, forced a delay and rescheduling of the meeting until November 16. Beth Post, president of the WMGA, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone to Baltusrol on a beautiful fall day. Once all the presentations were complete, Nominating Committee Chair, Helen Stovell, presented the slate of the new officers and Directors of the Board and they were elected by the membership. Amy Hyman, newly elected president, thanked Beth for all she has done for the Women s Met and then proceeded to conduct the reminder of the meeting. 3 Mike Diffley presented the Mental Side of Golf, Mental Coaching Mike Diffley has been the Head PGA professional at Pelham Country Club for the past 25 years. Mike is well known on the Met golf circuit. He has an illustrious career both as an amateur beginning as a junior and through his college years as a member of St. John s University 1982 Big East Championship team. He continued his winning ways into his professional life. As a mental coach, Mike works with over 25 Met PGA professionals including present and former Players of the Year. Mike shared his knowledge of the mental game Mike Diffley gives his presentaion with our membership. The audience was riveted as we all know what a big part the mental game plays in golf. He entertained the guests with his sense of humor and stories of pros he has coached. Some of Mike s good advice Members enjoying Mike Diffley s presentation Featured Club Tamarack Golf Club, Greenwich, CT. For this issue we are featuring a great group of women golfers. Tamarack Golf Club is a great example of women joining together for the good of the game, friendship, and competition. At a meeting to discuss opening day, a few years ago, one of the members showed the group a card with rules situations. Everyone at the table loved the idea of a simplified chart system of applying the Rules of Golf. The group then made the card for everyone as a favor for Opening Day. These women were generous to pass the idea to the WMGA. The WMGA duplicated the cards and now uses them as a fundraiser for the Scholarship Foundation. The Women s Committee Golf Association of Tamarack is an all inclusive group. There are many levels to the golfers at Tamarack and they all work together. Ronda Nahoum is the President of the Association for 18 holers. She works with a Board of 13 to plan the golf season, Christine Adonetti is the chair of the 9 holers, Cindy Kabat is a conscientious Met Rep who recruits new members. An interclub league, WIGL, is used as a training ground for the Met matches. WIGL is similar in format except the player has a partner. With all the hand holding and cajoling, most members who play in the team matches end up loving the challenge of a new course and meeting new friends. Tamarack is one example of women enjoying all aspects of golf. The WMGA loves to hear about your club. If your club has information to share in Tee Talk, please get in touch with Michele Marcus, editor. Tee Talk Fall
