1 Women s Metropolitan Golf Association WOMEN S MET GOLF EST TEE TALK Spring Knollwood Road Elmsford, New York TEL: (914) Michele Marcus, Editor The President s Message Many of us have felt the wrath of Hurricane Sandy, the 20+ inches of snow from the Nemo Blizzard, and the debilitating effects of a wicked flu season. Cheer up. There is reason to be upbeat; the best of 2013 begins in April when a fabulous Women s Met golf season will unfold! I am very enthusiastic about the Amy Hyman 2013 Women s Met Board, these women are awesome! I welcome our new Board members: Phyllis Gusick - Mount Kisco CC (WCT), VP/Competitions; Alicia Kapheim - Hopewell Valley CC (NJ), Sites Chair; Laura Algiero - Whippoorwill (WCT), Team Competitions; Patty Savage - Beacon Hill CC (NJ), NJ District Captain/Team Matches; Heidi Komoriya - Trump National (WCT), has returned to the Women s Met Board as Course Rating Chair; and Donna Winston - The Creek (LI), who was recently elected Foundation President. These women join our top notch returning Board members and an outstanding office staff: Nancy Early, Executive Director; Kaitlin Sabbagh, Manager of Tournament Operations; Kelsey Conway, our current P.J. Boatwright Jr. intern, who will be staying on as our Communication and Marketing associate and Sarah Relyea who is our new Boatwright intern. We are appreciative the USGA has continued its generous support of the Women s Met by approving our 2013 grant request. We value our relationship with the USGA and we continue to support USGA events with volunteers and publicity so please consider volunteering for the US Women s Open Championship on June at Sebonack CC in Southampton, NY. The Board is busy brainstorming fresh ideas for the new season. One area dear to our hearts is the WMGA Scholarship Foundation which has been renamed the WMGA Foundation because of its expanded mission. A big thanks to Gale Brudner, past president, and her Board for their dedication in raising money to grant college scholarships to deserving women. The Foundation Golf Classic, their largest fund raiser, is scheduled for Monday, August 20 at the highly revered Somerset Hills CC in NJ. The Women s Met will now oversee the day to day operations of the Foundation and there will be more coordination of efforts to support the future of women s golf, our Juniors! We ask that you support this important initiative. Donna Winston, previously Initiatives Chair, has agreed to step up and become our new Foundation President and Val DePiro will serve as its new Treasurer. I d like to take a moment to thank Beth Post for her leadership and capable execution of her responsibilities as past president. I value her mentoring and friendship as I transition to my current position. The game of golf and the Women s Met has been a real life changer personally & professionally for me. I have been incredibly fortunate to play many of the superb Met area golf courses. The opportunity has been a gift I treasure. I have had the pleasure of meeting, playing, and forging friendships while working with talented golfers. It is the goal of the Board to extend these same opportunities to you. These benefits flow directly from your participation. It is definitely not mandatory for our members to participate in team matches in order to play in our tournaments. Team matches are simply a kick off to the season and an excellent way to build team and Met area camaraderie. Our objective is to make the entire Women s Met golf schedule available to suit varying appetites for competition or just for fun. You re not done experiencing all the Women s Met has to offer just by playing on your team. There are plenty of exciting, beautiful courses and venues throughout our Met region that graciously make themselves available each season and this experience should not be missed. Play and get involved! I look forward to a great 2013 golf season and meeting you on and off the course. Keep it in the short grass and go low!

5 Junior Girls Message With the promise of spring around the corner, it gives me great pleasure to welcome back our juniors for another summer season of golf! Our Junior Girls membership has grown steadily during the past few years and they have represented our Women s Met well with suc- Diane Mock cess and excellent sportsmanship on our member links. Here is a glimpse of the highlights surrounding last year s junior events: The Junior Intercity Team of six girls captured the Enos Cup for the second consecutive year at Old Westbury CC and is poised to retain the honor again in June at Saucon Valley CC in Bethlehem, PA. A select group of Junior Girls participated in the French- American Challenge at Sebonack Golf Club in October. Cindy Ha became our Junior Champion at Pelham CC as well as our Maureen Orcutt Tournament Trophy winner at White Beeches for the second year in a row! Quite a champion effort! Girls who were picking up the club for the first time enjoyed the camaraderie and spirit of fun learning the game with friends at our Girls To The Tee instructional golf clinic at Westchester Country Club. A dazzling display of great play at our Junior competitions will be taking place in all three districts in the Metropolitan area. No membership or handicap is required to compete in the Maureen Orcutt Trophy Tournament on July 26 th at White Beeches in New Jersey or our Junior Girls Open Championship at Woodmere on Long Island on August 1 st. How fortunate our youngest members are to participate and compete at these magnificent sites! The future of our Association, whose mission is promoting women in competition, belongs in the hands of our youngest members. Those of you who share our commitment in promoting golf opportunities for Junior Girls can relate to the words of a song made famous by the late Whitney Houston. I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Show them all the beauty they possess inside. Give them a sense of pride to make it easier. Encouraging our juniors to participate in the tournaments and opportunities the Women s Met will provide them is the message I would like to send out to all of you. The WMGA Foundation Committee is working hard to award those in need the assistance they deserve. Our Junior Fellowship Program allows girls to become full junior members for a year even if their families do not belong to a member club. Fabulous opportunities await those young ladies who take a swing in the right direction. Golf is a lifetime adventure, how nice for us to pass it on. Featured Golf Course The Maidstone Club East Hampton, New York The Maidstone Club in East Hampton, New York will be the host of our Better Ball A Championship on October 2 & 3. Founded in 1891, Maidstone s eighteen-hole course has been named one of Golf Digest s Top 100 Courses. The layout offers stunning ocean views from many of its award-winning holes. The last time Maidstone hosted a Women s Met event was for the 2005 Seniors A Championship. The tentative schedule of events for the first day of the Better Ball A begins with a brunch for the players followed by a shotgun start. After golf, there will be a casual barbeque dinner at the club for all the participants. The second day of competition will have morning tee times with lunch following play. We are excited to return to Maidstone for what is sure to be a fun and memorable time for all. Grab a few of your friends and we will see you in October for a great getaway! 5 Tee Talk Spring
