Other Playing Opportunities The Mens City League team, comprised of five players each week, plays on Wednesdays starting May 2 at eight different clubs. Qualifying takes place each week prior to play. Players with a handicap index of 10.0 or better can attempt to earn a spot on the week s team by turning in a qualifying score by the Sunday prior to play. We want to send our best and you could be part of the winning effort. Our Pro Shop staff or Captain Bill Borkon can answer any questions you may have. The Mens Senior League Captain, Roger Fischbach, has a full season-long event schedule for men 50 and over. Be sure to watch the bulletin board for dates and sites. Watch for next month s newsletter with all the facts about the new McGladry 3-Man Team Championship. Our local event will be held on Saturday, June 30. It s a new local, state and national event that really looks like fun!... Bob Olds MAC So close but yet so far. Two weeks ago it was eighty degrees. Then a week of blustery cold, and tonight we get three inches of snow. Well, hopefully by the time you read this, Mother Nature will have regained her senses and we ll be back at the hacking. From every indication, the course wintered exceptionally well, and a few of the more troublesome trees are no longer there to haunt us. Which leads to a few golf notes. First, please remember our Adopt-a-hole initiative, which began last year and had a very positive effect. For those who are not yet with the program, take a look at the chart posted on the bulletin board outside the Pro Shop. Based on the first letter of your last name, you have been assigned to a specific golf hole. On that hole, take a few seconds to pick up any broken and embedded tees, repair divots, smooth untidy sand traps, and repair ball marks on the green. Of course, this doesn t mean that you re off the hook from taking care of every other hole as well, just a special effort on the hole you ve been asked to adopt. Another course maintenance issue involves cart driving. Especially with wet Spring conditions, the potential damage is quite obvious, so stay on the paths, in the rough and away from low spots. But also remember that the weight of the carts causes soil compaction (leading to hard pan and tight lies) even in dry areas, so at all times make sure stay at least 30 feet (100 feet is better) from the greens. Max would prefer to avoid having to rope off additional areas, so please be respectful of these rules. Your Members Advisory Committee has two specific projects going. The first is to assist Scott Carlson and the Handicap Committee in making sure that everyone understands the intricacies of scoring and posting. The second is to act as Ambassadors to new and even prospective members. So if you have a question about the club, its activities, or even about other members, don t hesitate to corner one of us.... George Loomis Handicap News How Well Should You Play The most important single thing which can be said about the USGA handicap system (which is used to figure all of our handicaps) is that your handicap is based upon your potential rather than an average of all your scores. The
3 USGA s Handicap Research Team calculates that the average player (all of us fit this category for handicap purposes) is expected to play to his Course Handicap or better only 25% of the time. A player s average round should be about 3-4 strokes higher than his or her handicap and the best score in a players last 20 (those shown on the computer) should only be two strokes better than his or her Handicap. A player s Handicap Index reflects his or her potential because it is based upon the best 10 out of the last 20 scores. What about these incredible tournament scores we often witness or hear about? The USGA calculates that the odds of a player in the handicap range of (a lot of us and the average male golfer) beating his handicap by 5 strokes is 174:1 and beating it by 8 strokes is 1138:1 or once in a lifetime of golf for most of us. The odds of two players both beating their handicaps by 8 strokes in an event is 14,912:1. Certainly some interesting numbers to ponder. If your handicap and the scores you shoot seem to be inconsistent with this, either you do worse than this or better, maybe it s a result of not correctly posting your scores or not correctly scoring your rounds. This is where Equitable Stroke Control (ESC) comes in to play. Equitable stroke control or ESC for short is the downward adjustment of individual hole scores for handicap purposes in order to make handicaps more representative of a player s potential. In effect, ESC prevents a very bad hole from having a disproportionate effect on your handicap. ESC sets a maximum number that a player can post for handicap purposes on any hole depending on the player s Course handicap. There is no limit on the number of holes you can adjust your score. The adjustment for various handicaps is shown in the table below. Equitable Stroke Control Course Handicap Maximum # On Any Hole 9 or less Double Bogey 10 through through through or more 10 Please note that these adjustments are made based on your course handicap not your USGA handicap index. Also, please be aware that these adjustments are made for handicap purposes, specifically to determine what number you should post in the computer, but do not in any way affect the score you should be reporting in a competition. For example, if you are in a stroke play competition and if ESC allows you to only take a 7 and you have already recorded 7 strokes on that hole, you must still complete the hole and record that score for the competition but report only a 7 when you post your score for handicap purposes. As an aside, your advisory board had an excellent discussion on handicaps at it s March meeting, and they thoroughly enjoyed the little quiz I administered. If you have questions or a desire to learn more about handicaps, the USGA web site (USGA.org/handicap) has an excellent discussion about handicaps. Also, feel free to direct any of your questions to one of the Handicap Committee members or one of our golf professionals. Golf Course News... Scott Carlson Components of turfgrass quality on a putting green include consistency, smoothness, speed, firmness, resiliency and absence of turf grain, creating smooth true ball roll characteristics. Ball roll involves movement of a golf ball along a turf surface by rotation after it strikes the turf after its air flight, or as the result of a putting stroke. The speed or velocity of a putting green, as assessed by ball roll distance, is determined from a cultural standpoint primarily by the height of cut, mowing frequency, groomer use, turf rolling, topdressing, fertility level, and irrigation practices. Three other key factors in ball roll distance are the slope of the green, the wind speed and direction, the turf grass species and cultivar. The resiliency of a turf is the capability to spring back to its original position after a ball, shoe or other object strikes the surface. Typically, modern putting greens are closely mowed at 1/ 10 to 3/16 inch to achieve the uniformity and smoothness required for trueness of ball roll, speed of the green and bounce for the approach shot. Close, frequent mowing results in a very high shoot density and a vertical leaf orientation, but excessively close mowing can cause turf damage. 9 Hole League... Shrimp and Garlic Pasta 1/4 cup Olive Oil 1/4 tsp Red Pepper flakes, crushed 1 pound Medium Shrimp, peeled and de-veined 1/2 pound Asparagus, trimmed and in 1 lengths 1 1/2 cups Mushrooms, sliced 1/2 Small Red Bell Pepper, slivered 3 Green Onions, cut thin 1 clove Garlic, minced Salt, to taste 1 pound Fettuccine, cooked 1/2 cup Lobster Stock or Chicken Broth 3 Tbsp Fresh Parsley, finely chopped 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated Heat the oil with the red pepper flakes in a large skillet. Once hot, add the shrimp and cook over high heat for about 3 minutes or until cooked. Remove the shrimp and set aside. Add asparagus, mushrooms, red peppers, green onions and salt to the same pan. Cook, stirring often for 4-5 minutes until the vegetables are tender, but still crisp. Add cooked pasta, stock or broth and cooked shrimp. Heat to a simmer. Remove from heat and toss in the parsley. Add more seasoning to taste. Place in a pasta bowl and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese (don t be shy!!). Sounds like a lot of work, but it s really pretty quick after you have prepped everything.... Chef Tiger Cancellation Policy In order to prepare fresh food and staff according to dining needs, MCC managers base their decisions on the reservations made for special events. And due to space limitations, it might be necessary to turn other members and their guests away. Therefore, if you make reservations for a special event and then find that you or any members of your party are unable to attend, you must notify Office or Catering personnel ( during normal business hours) at least 48 hours in advance in order not to be charged for that event. Since cancellations made later than that result in setup, preparation, unused food and additional staffing, it is necessary for the Club to charge your account for the cost of the unused reservations.
