There will be a mandatory apprentice jockeys meeting with the Stewards at 11:30 a.m., followed by a meeting of all jockeys. There will be an officials meeting immediately following the Jockeys meetings at the Stewards Stand at 11:45 a.m. Note: Jockey fees for non-winners in flat races at the Virginia Gold Cup will be $100. Credentials Needed: All owners, trainers, riders, and grooms participating in the Virginia Gold Cup races are required to be licensed by the Virginia Racing Commission (VRC). The easiest way to obtain a license is by going to the Commission's website at and clicking on "Virginia Racing License" in the upper left-hand side of the home page. You will then see a list of documents including the "Racing Application for Participants", "General Application Instructions", "Fee Schedule", and "Credit Card Verification Form". Simply print out the application and complete it by referring to the fee schedule and general instructions. Once the application is completed, signed, and dated you may either mail it along with the appropriate payment to 5707 Huntsman Road, Suite 201-B, Richmond, VA or scan the application along with Credit Card Verification Form and to VRCLicense@vrc.virginia.gov. The VRC will also be on site at the Spring House on Thursday, May 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Friday, May 4 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for licensing or picking up badges. (Please note: All licensing must to be completed by Friday, May 4.) Horsemen will receive 4 complimentary wristbands for each horse entered to race, 1 per trainer and jockey; additional wristbands may be purchased at $35 each. The 2018 NSA mirror-hung car pass will admit the vehicle to Gate 2. The NSA pin will allow entrance to Members Hill only but does not allow entrance to VRC restricted areas. Anyone with questions can contact the VGCA office at SADDLING IN THE STABLE AREA: Please be advised that the VGCA has obtained a change in the VRC statutes allows saddling in the stable. Therefore, ALL horses will be saddled in the stable area and will then be led to the paddock TOGETHER. The trainer or their designate will be responsible for transporting the tack after weighing out back to the barn for saddling. Jockeys are not allowed in the stabling area. Please note post time for each race and have your horse ready to parade to the paddock at the appropriate time. If trainers have multiple horses in a race or horses in back to back races, please make appropriate plans as it is imperative that we stay on schedule. The Virginia Gold Cup Races will have Pari-Mutuel wagering and be subject to the authority of the Virginia Racing Commission. Private veterinarians are prohibited to have contact with horses prior to racing. Veterinarians and trainers are encouraged refer to the Virginia Medication Synopsis (updated January 2018) found on the homepage of the Virginia Racing Commission website ( or contact the Racing Commission State Veterinarian, Dr. Richard Harden, with any specific medication questions at or A veterinary exam is required for all horses. Examinations will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end by 11:30 a.m. ALL HORSES (WHETHER ON LASIX OR NOT) MUST BE ON THE GROUNDS BY 10:00 A.M. FOR THE PRE-RACE VET EXAM. THIRD PARTY FUROSEMIDE (SALIX) ADMINISTRATION: Horsemen are reminded that third party administration of furosemide (Salix) is in effect at this race meet. Horses shipping to Virginia Gold Cup must have a health certificate dated within the last 10 days with the following information: Horses have not originated from a barn with a case or suspect case of Herpes virus; been vaccinated with EHV-1 no less than seven days and no more than 120 days; and a Coggins test conducted within 12 months. 4 Participants at the Gold Cup will be admitted at Horsemen's Gate #2 with the regular NSA-issued 2018 Horsemen's hang tag car pass. NSA Horsemen's pins will be honored at the gate to Members Hill but will not admit vehicles at gates. Owners and trainers are encouraged to view the races from the Owner/Trainer Deck or the nearby Chairman's Box. The race committee asks that use of the viewing stand and paddock be restricted to owners and trainers of horses in that race. Please be considerate of those running horses, since there is limited space. Luncheon near the Stewards Stand from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. After Race Party honoring the Gold Cup winner will commence after the last race. The Virginia Gold Cup racecourse was inspected on April 24, 2018 by Adel Marquez. Turf: Fescue and bluegrass, 6 inches in height. Compaction: (Good) Moisture: Raining during course inspection.
