Morris The Steeplethon (#145) was cancelled due to an insufficient number of entries. Scratches, naming of riders and equipment changes by 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 22, with the NSA office. (410) For communication with the NSA after 5:00 p.m., Friday: NSA Voice Mail - (410) (answers after 5th ring). NSA cellular phone - (443) (Bill Gallo) Stewards: Tad Zimmerman (Presiding), Clinton Pitts, Ismael Trejo, Stan Salter (Safety Steward). NSA Officials: Stewards Secretary - Bill Gallo; Clerk of Scales - Mario Verge; Horse Identifier - Brian Jarvis; Starter - Graham Alcock; Testing Vet - Virginia Racing Commission; Medication Veterinarian - Dr. Jeff Witwer ( ). There will be a mandatory jockeys meeting at 11:00 a.m. with the Stewards and an officials meeting at the Stewards stand at 11:15 a.m. Licensing: All owners and trainers participating in the flat races at International Gold Cup (#147, #149 and #151) are not required to be licensed by the National Steeplechase Association (NSA). They are, however, required to be licensed by the Virginia Racing Commission. Additionally, NSA entry fees for those three flat races will be waived for the 2014 International Gold Cup races on a onetime basis to encourage participation at this pari-mutuel meet. In all other races owners and trainers must have a 2014 Virginia Racing Commission license, which can be downloaded on the VRC website, and a NSA license. Grooms and jockeys must have a VRC license. If you had a license for the spring race you can use the same one for the fall race. Note: Licensed grooms are for hire by contacting T.C. Williams ( ) - off track grooms license accepted. Credentials Needed: A horsemen's check-in tent will be located in the stable area to handout and sell armbands (only needed for those without a license). Horsemen will receive 4 complimentary armbands per participating owner, trainer and jockey; additional armbands may be purchased at $35 each. The 2014 NSA mirrorhung car pass will admit the vehicle to Gate 2. The NSA pin will allow entrance to Members Hill only. Anyone with questions can contact the VGCA office at Access Only Passes: these passes are for family and partnerships and can allow access to the stable area accompanied by a VRC licensed person. This pass does not allow access to the hospitality tent. Please contact Dr. Griffin at if you are in need of Access Only Passes. VRC will be set up on Friday, October 24 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., and Saturday October 25 at the Command Post inside Gate 1 at 8:00 a.m., to license last- minute owners, trainers and riders. However it is suggested that you get your 2014 license in advance. Horsemen who have not received vehicle passes prior to race day must go to Will Call at the Country Store across from Gate 1 on Route 245. Post time for the first race is 12:00 noon. Riders must be present and signed in to the Jockey area by 10:30. You may then continue a course walk as long as you are present for the Stewards meeting. Anyone who has renewed their 2014 VRC license and HAS NOT RECEIVED THEIR BADGE, please contact the VRC permitting department at VRC representative will be set up at the command post inside Gate 1 on Friday and Race Day. Virginia Gold Cup Races this year will have Pari-Mutuel wagering (CASH ONLY) and be subject to the authority of the Virginia Racing Commission. Pari-Mutuel wagering subjects the Virginia Gold Cup Races to the authority of the Virginia Racing Commission. As a result, the VRC Regulations take precedence over NSA rules. Fortunately, most regulations and procedures regarding medication are similar, with the most notable exception: the administration of furosemide is NO LATER than 4 hours to post by the approved veterinarian on the race grounds. Private veterinarians are prohibited contact with the horses prior to racing. Anabolic steroids are prohibited for a minimum of 60 days prior to racing. Intra-articular injections are prohibited for 7 days. Corticosteroids are prohibited for 3 days. Oral administration of butazoladin and flunixin is prohibited for 48 hours, and if not used orally one may be administered intravenously prior to post: 24 hours for bute or 32 hours for flunixin. Veterinarians and trainers are encouraged to contact the Racing Commission with any specific questions they may have at Horses shipping to Virginia Gold Cup must have a health certificate with the following information: Horses have not originated from a barn with a case or suspect case of Herpes virus; been vaccinated with EHV-1 no less than seven days and no more than 90 days; and a coggins test conducted within 12 months.
