All races at Fair Hill are run under the jurisdiction of the Maryland Racing Commission. Owners, trainers and riders must be licensed by the Maryland Racing Commission. All trainers must be covered by workmen's compensation insurance and a certificate of insurance evidencing that coverage must be presented prior to starting. Note: As of January 1, 2017 the Maryland Racing Commission no longer charges license fees. The completion of an application is still a requirement to obtain a license. Thoroughbred Owners and Trainers have to continue to pay the Jockey Fund $100. For questions regarding licensing or insurance contact the Maryland Racing Commission licensing office at ( ). All jockeys must have proper documentation for licensing. Foreign jockeys must have a visa which grants permission to work in the United States or they will not be allowed to ride. Foreign riders with questions should contact Joe Poag at the Maryland Racing Commission ( ). In order to alleviate congestion in the racing office at the Fair Hill Races, you may obtain the license form from the NSA office ( ). Rider allowances ("bugs") must be claimed no later than 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 24. There will be a mandatory apprentice jockeys meeting in the paddock at 11:45 p.m. with the Stewards, followed by a meeting of all jockeys. ALL JOCKEYS MUST ATTEND. There will be a meeting of all Officials in the paddock at 12:15 p.m. LASIX is the ONLY medication allowed on race day and is to be administered by a veterinarian designated by the Commission, Dr. Jay Baldwin. All horses are required to be treated no less than 3 hours prior to its race IV only 2-10 cc's. Horses arriving late for lasix will be scratched. No Exceptions. Horse not attended will not be treated. TRAINERS WITH HORSE(S) ON LASIX MUST CONTACT MELANIE MARTIN ( ) TO DECLARE DOSAGE AMOUNT. Note: Lasix fee is $20 and due at time of treatment. Cash or checks accepted. Checks payable to First Equine LLC/ Dr. Jay Baldwin. Any unpaid Lasix fee from the previous year can result in a scratch. There will be a vet check for all horses beginning at 9:00 a.m. next to stabling area. All horses must be on the grounds by 11:00 a.m. (2 hours prior to the first race) for the pre-race vet check. Lasix horses must be on the grounds at least 4 hours prior to post time for their race, and no later than 2 hours prior to the first race. No scratches after scratch time on Wednesday, May 23 unless excused by the Stewards. ATTENTION HORSEMEN: Original foal papers and current Coggins must be turned in to the Foal Clerk, located in the paddock office, prior to the race. Maryland Million Premium Bonuses will be awarded to Maryland Million nominated horses that compete all races except those on the flat (First and Second) and the Maiden Claiming Hurdle. A $5,000 bonus applies in each race and bonus money will be distributed as follows: 60% to the winner, 30% to second and 10% to third. Turf: The turf is a mixture of fescue and native grasses, thick and lush, 4-5 inches in height, and provides a thick cushion. Smoothness: Fairly smooth throughout. DIRECTIONS FROM THE NORTH: I-95 South or the New Jersey Turnpike South into Delaware. Continue on I-95 through toll booth into Maryland. Take the first Maryland exit, Route 279 South to Elkton, not Newark, DE. Follow to 3rd Traffic Light. Turn Right on Route 213 North. Go approximately 8 miles to 1st Traffic Light (Junction of Route 213 and Route 273). Turn right onto Route 273. Entrance to Fair Hill Races will be on the right, with additional parking across the street. DIRECTIONS FROM THE SOUTH: I-95 North from Baltimore. After paying the toll at the Susquehanna River Toll Booth, go approximately 7 miles to the Exit 100 (Route 272 North East/Rising Sun). Follow Route 272 North about 5 miles to the traffic light at the intersection of Route 273. Turn right onto Route 273 East toward Newark, DE. Go 5 miles to the traffic light at the intersection of Routes 273 and 213. The entrance to Fair Hill Races is just past the traffic light.
