This sale has been over 35 years in the making. Spring Creek Simmentals was established in 1973 and since that time we have built our herd primarily by keeping our top end replacement females. Our cash flow comes from sale bulls, feeder cattle and from females sold into the commercial industry through our Spring Creek and Guests Bred Female Sale held in the fall at Heartland in Virden, Mb. The top females from our best cow families have always gone into the replacement pen. The original traditional females, many of which were upgraded and polled, were bred to thick Fleckvieh bulls. Red and Black genetics were then used on this Fleckvieh influenced herd. Some of these cattle are not long on Red or Black Genetics, but they certainly are deep in quality and producing ability. I feel that a pedigree that contains strong traditional cattle is more valuable than one that has some Red or Black pedigree that lacks a little quality. Regardless of the breed strain or colour, a rigid selection and culling protocol was maintained. The females had to be fertile and docile with very good udders and sound feet and legs. Herd sires had to be thick, sound and docile with large testicles. You will find sale cattle that have had more feed, but I don t think you will find any with more genetic potential or cow families with more depth in their producing ability. Our herd has grown to a point where we bred over 350 females in This has put pressure on our land base, feed supplies and labor force. It was decided that we must reduce our cow herd numbers somewhat. Rather than just sell the bottom end, we have decided to sell all our L, M, N and P females along with some select cows, thirty-five bred heifers and a sampling of open heifers. Many of these cows have raised high sellers in our annual Bull Sale as noted in the comments on the individual lots. Many of these cows will also carry the services of our high selling bulls from previous sales. Our pedigrees are unique as we have used our herd bulls heavily with many of these herd sires being raised here at the ranch. The Tank influence has had a major impact on our herd. We feel very fortunate to have had this influence and now is your opportunity to put these exclusive genetics to work for you. This sale will have something for everyone: Black, Red, Traditional, fall calvers, bred heifers and open heifer calves. This will ensure a variety of calves to cover all the bull sale markets. I don t have to tell cattlemen about our industry s tough times over the last number of years, but we must remember that what goes down must come up. Surely the turnaround is not far away. In the past, this up-swing in markets has happened quickly and often we were not positioned to take advantage of the good markets. I really believe the cattle sold in this sale will make good profits for their new owners; hence the name of the sale, Opportunity Knocks. As with our Bull Sales, we will be selling the cows at the ranch, with all cattle appearing on a power-point screen for the auction sale rather than running all the cattle through the sale barn. The cattle will all be in the yard at sale time. We encourage everyone to come to the ranch for a pre-sale visit to view the cattle. The coffee is always on.
