1 A Message from Our President Hello members and Corvette enthusiasts, Thanks again for all your support as your President for CGCC in At our January meeting we passed a couple of tablets around for members to volunteer to help with SUPERVETTE Saturday. After the meeting I picked up the tablets and counted the names when I got home, we had 57 or 58 names on the lists; this was exciting to me and all involved with SVS. This is a great start and there were fewer than 90 members present. At the February meeting we will pass the sign-up list for those who have not done so already. THANK YOU to all of those who have already volunteered to help. I am looking forward to our Valentine weekend trip to The Ridges Resort on Lake Chatuge. We will not have a general meeting prior to our trip, but I look forward to seeing all of you that have signed up to go. Let s hope we have no snow or ice prior to and the weekend of our trip so we can all drive our beautiful Corvettes to the Resort. For all our new and old, active and those that are not so active members, look at the planned activities to come out and join in with the club. There are many activities that our VP Activities, Ron Deering, is putting together and some that have not been set up yet to join in. If you have an activity or a destination, a place to go see, please let Ron or one of the BOD members know. We are always looking for suggestions from members, so feel free to contact any of the board members or myself. 3 Ron Deering, VP Activities There has been a lot of motion behind the scenes in the Activities area during the month of January. While some of this is far out beyond most of your radar screens, I will tell you some of what has been happening. One of my first orders of business was to schedule the next Christmas party. While some of you may not yet have all of your decorations stored away, scheduling the Christmas party is a high priority due to a several reasons: (1) the limited number of Saturdays available in December; (2) limitations on space to hold our large group; and (3), the cost. The Board heard several negative comments about the hotel and caterer from our last party. Therefore, we decided to move the 2018 party to a new hotel, The Holiday Inn Atlanta/Roswell on Holcomb Bridge Road. The next item was scheduling the picnic. We are using the same lovely setting near the Lake Allatoona Dam in Cartersville that we used last year. However, we are moving the date to September 29 th in an effort to beat the heat. Only time will tell how that works out. Work on our premier charity event, SuperVette Saturday, is well underway. We still need a few volunteers to take the lead in some critical areas, such as the Silent Auction, where we earn most of our charity funds. Let me or Ken know if you would like to help. And thanks to all of you who have already volunteered to help. Our calendar is starting to populate with other recurring and interesting activities. We are almost ready to set out on our annual Valentine weekend excursion; this year at the Ridges Resort in Young Harris. We have 68 members signed up and it looks like it will be a great weekend. If the weather cooperates, it will be perfect. In April we have the Buyavette/Lanier Corvette charity car show at the Buyavette site. A caravan will take the group to Buyavette. Both Buyavette and Lanier support us during SuperVette and we reciprocate. We are planning for the annual National Corvette Museum Michelin Bash with an Ark Encounter overnight ride before the Bash. We will have one or two caravans going to the Bash depending on how many members sign up and the desired routing. Check the website events calendar often to sign up and for updates and information. As always, let me know if you have a question or need help. Ron Classic Glass Corvette Club 3

5 Daytona Rolex 24, January 25 28, 2018 By Tom Jarrett and Don Bailey Sometimes you get lucky! A few months ago I started thinking about the 2018 racing season, and contacted Daytona Speedway for tickets to the Rolex 24. I heard laughing (just kidding) on the other end of the phone, and the Customer Service person informed me that the tickets to the Corvette Corral at the Rolex 24 had sold out long ago. Not to be deterred, I called the National Corvette Museum to see if I could get tickets through the Museum in Motion (MIM). Same story - sold out long ago. Well, never say never! I asked to be put on a waiting list in case someone had to cancel. To my surprise, I got an from the museum that a member had two tickets to sell. I immediately responded to the person selling the tickets and got a response a few hours later saying I was the first of several people to respond. I jumped on it! Now I have two tickets to the race and the Corvette Corral. I next called Don Bailey to see if he was up for going to the race. Don managed to get time off from work. Before you knew it, we were driving to Daytona for a great event. We were not the only lucky people, as we met Bill and Joyce Rawlings at the Corral. They too had put their name on a waiting list for the MIM at the Rolex 24, and a week or two before the race, got a call that they had tickets to the race and the Corral. It was great having friends from our club there with us. The MIM has a very good package deal that covers rooms, meals and activities for the group, in addition to the race events. There is so much to see and do, and Daytona IMSA is one of the best run events you can attend. Don and I took in the garages on Thursday and were able to get in to meet the Corvette Racing Team. We got a close look at both of the Corvette race cars (#3 and #4) and got a chance to talk to the crews. Friday, the Corvette Corral opened early for three parade laps on the track. You don t realize how steep the banking is (31 degrees) until you re driving it. The IMSA representative gave us our safety briefing and told us our laps would only include part of the banking. As a parade lap, it is a lead-follow setup; but we did pick up the pace as we completed the first lap. On the front straight off the banking we hit about 95 mph, and when driving the infield road course, we got to play with the racing line. All day on Friday, the Corral has special speakers and a meet and greet with the Corvette Race team drivers which includes an autograph session. There were great giveaways; even a set of Michelin tires! We heard lots of updates from Chevrolet, Michelin, Mobil and Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing Team Program Manager. Saturday was the exciting start of the Rolex 24 race. We got to do the grid walk and were able to get next to the cars, pit crews and drivers. Don, his beautiful daughter Alana and I got to watch the race from the Start-Finish line in the stands with a view of the entire track - spectacular! We watched a Ferrari Q catch on fire in the pits while fueling. Seeing the race at night is also a rolling light show and the noise is overwhelming unless you wear Classic Glass Corvette Club 5

6 ear protection. The Corvette Team ran a great race and had locked in on 3 rd and 4 th place running behind the Ford GTs. It stayed that way all the way to the end of the race on Sunday afternoon. We also got a chance to see the beach and take in some great seafood in a restaurant near Flagler Beach, just north of Daytona. We encountered heavy rain on the ride back to Atlanta, and I was glad Don was along to help with the driving. As Don is a former Marine pilot with lots of night flight time, I felt I was in safe hands during the tough drive at night. Next year, let s get more CGCC members to sign up early with the NCM MIM. Don t wait until late spring, or you will be disappointed. You should not depend on your luck to get in, but luck does help! CGCC members can call Karen or Bryce at the NCM to be put on the waiting list for next year s Daytona Race and Corvette Corral.. Thanks to the Corvette Museum, we had a wonderful time!! Please sign up for a specific job you or if unsure as to what you would like to do, sign up anyway! There is a lot of work to do before the event takes place. For example, Ron has spoken with Carl Etter who has offered to assist with advertising. People who have done the registration and 50/50 raffle may want to do this again this year. Ron is planning to hold a monthly meeting with those who are planning to volunteer for this event. Regarding dates for upcoming activities on the web s Calendar of Events, Ron reminded everyone that many of the dates are simply placeholders and the Calendar will be updated often. For example, Don Hamrick is the event manager for the Poker Run. The date has not been determined, but should take place in March. Send Ron your ideas for events and if anyone is willing to take charge of an event, let him know that also! The Christmas/Holiday Party will be held at a different location this year. The BOD voted to move the party to the Holiday Inn Roswell/Holcomb Bridge Road. Valentine Cruise, Lake Chatuge Ron thanked Doug and Chris Reed for all their work in setting up this event. Thus far, 70 people have signed up. In addition to signing up on our website, make sure you book your hotel room as rooms are limited. Don Hamrick is working with Ron on this event. Don told everyone that he is looking at various routes and restaurants. Check in is at 4pm and dinner is at 6pm. He has found a restaurant in Jasper that serves a brunch and lunch. We may take the backroads to Blairsville. We will probably meet at Sam s Club on 92; however, more information will be provided. Picnic The BOD voted to move the date for the picnic to September 29 th. It will be in the same location as Riverside Park Day Use Area. We have reserved the large pavilion and there is parking for 100 cars. Classic Glass Corvette Club 9

10 Ron reminded us that our website also has a page for Non-Club Sponsored Events. Please check it out often. This year, the Atlanta Motorama coincides with the NCM Bash, April 28 & 29. If you are unable to attend the Bash, you may enjoy attending the Motorama. Vice President of Membership Cindy Cowart announced that we have 202 members with 87 present tonight. We have three guests: Bob and Joyce Ruiz, owners of a 2006 burgundy Corvette, and Cindy Deering, daughter-in-law of Ron and Carolyn Deering, visiting from Norfolk, VA. She is the wife of their second son, Brent, who is stationed on the USS George Washington which is currently being overhauled in Norfolk. The winner of the $87 membership drawing is Brenda & Percy Clapp. Vice President At Large Winston Whitlock thanked Sandi Johannes for helping tonight. She is a tough act to follow! We made $280 from the sale of raffle tickets. $140 will go to the club and $70 each to two winners: Jerry & Phyllis Fountain and Carolyn Deering. The big question of the evening, Who has a new Corvette? was answered by the following folks: Rick & Arlyn Huntzicker White Grand Sport Convertible Bill & Linda Hepler 2017 Black Rose Grand Sport Convertible Ed & Lynne Gollob 2017 Racing Yellow Grand Sport Coupe Ken Cearns reminded everyone that SuperVette is our big money maker and we need the club to help make it successful. NCM Ambassador PJ Ray announced that National Corvette Museum now offers the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a Corvette for a fun and exciting racing experience. The racing simulator uses a real C6 Corvette for the cockpit and is surrounded by three screens to provide the racetrack s visuals. The NCM Bash is April She and Wayne are going up early to visit Noah s Ark. If anyone is interested in visiting The Ark, let her know. She reminded us that NCM members can obtain a discount when purchasing a new Corvette. June 8 is the 2018 NCM Lemans Tour. There are a limited number of openings; sign up early if planning to attend. Club Store Manager Jim Johannes is looking for fresh ideas for spring and summer clothing. The jacket retail price has increased 20% and will be discontinued in February.
