2 Officers for 2006 President Barry Tomlinson Vice President At Large Randy Cooper Vice President of Membership Don Shamel Vice President of Activities Cindy Owens Secretary Harriette Majoros Treasurer Tom Sauntry Board Members John Pardus Reggie Martin Bob Renneke Joe Owens NCM Ambassador Fred Hale Webmaster Bridget Stephens Newsletter Editor Bill Majoros Editor s Corner There are not many months left to our Corvette year but there are some very exciting upcoming events. Plan to participate. Some observations about our club and its people. Don Shamel loves to direct traffic as he so ably did on SVS. He did a great job of passing each car off to the appropriate parking guy to get the cars where they belonged. Then there was Cindy doing what she does so well multi-tasking; in registration, then making up the door prize vouchers for the bar-b-que folks, checking on the silent auction and so on and all the while talking about this and that and never missing a beat. Did you notice brand new members Perry and Nancy Gossett putting ballots in cars? Tom Sauntry counting money, making it accountable to the proper area and then having someone make another purchase and the recount began again and that was after sitting out side putting green/ orange stickers on windshields. Barry stripping off tickets for the 50/50 again and again. Did you notice that once she got done with the registration, Cheryl was the ticket puller-parter. I know there is no such word but you know what I mean. We do need to get Bob Renneke auctioneer lessons. So many people doing this and that to make sure the event went as seamlessly as possible. Even Carl Etter made sure Page 2 Volume XVI Issue 8 August 2006 that his folding chair was occupied just kidding with you Carl. Did you notice too how many of our club members had their families come and look at the show- kids and grandkids alike? Did you hear comments on how smoothly the registration and parking went? We did. So why on such a horrendously hot day do all of these good folks take time out? In the end it is to support our many kids charities. This means instead of $100 per person or family of 5, there can be more gifts purchased for those in need. The smiles that our Vettes put on our faces when we clean them up, drive them, show them, are translated to others and who knows just maybe inspire one of those kids to succeed so that he or she can also buy a Vette and chase around on a miserably hot SVS. Make sure your name is on the list of volunteers next year- you do make a difference in this world. 3 *Corvettes For Sale* If you have a Corvette for sale, we will put it into the newsletter for 1 month free of charge. The ad can have up to 3 lines and contain only a basic description and contact information. After that you can run an extended ad for 6 months and only have to pay $10 for members and $25 for non-members. This should be a great new feature to the newsletter. If you have any questions, please contact Bill Majoros VETTE'S ON THE ROCKIES By Ron Floyd The 33rd annual Vette's On The Rockies all Corvette show in Breckenridge and Frisco, Colorado that we attended in late July was an unqualified success! The show drew approximately 500 Corvette's from all over the country. Robin and I accompanied our own Chaz and Gael Cone and Buzz and Jackie Nielsen from Florida. Both have Commemorative Editions - 53 like bodies on a modern C5 chassis. Some may recognize too that Buzz is the current chair of the National Corvette Museum board. While the show was great, traveling with the Cone's and Nielsen s and seeing many many wonderful sights along the way and while in Colorado were the true highlights of the trip! I can only encourage all to try and take in this show in the future but, importantly, take lot's of time especially if you've never seen the Rocky Mountains and the great and many other wonderful natural and other sights. Some of you know that Chaz is a wizard with web sites and such and another outstanding feature of our trip is the web site he created and updated each day with lot's of great narrative and a zillion pictures. If you'd care to look back on this great venture go to: However, if you do visit the site, take care not to make me cry again, by bringing up my "boo boo" in my presence!! LOOKING BACK Classic Glass August 1996 By Ron Floyd The Vette Sette had a splendid column listing the Top Ten Reasons why Zora Arkus-Duntov was a "cool car guy". Member Peter Armstrong detailed his early interests in Corvette's and the long process of becoming an owner, purchasing his first, a '65 white roadster, from member Keith Biggers in late Rich Wagner highlighted a day of fun with club members at their lake home. While out on the lake on their pontoon boat, they quite literally met up with an Australian Rowing Team out practicing for that years Olympics. Corvette Trivia Did you know: Ron Floyd rfloyd1094@comcast.net The first 200 C5 Vettes were all painted red? The last Fairway Green a 1998 model rolled off the line on 11/10/97 and the color was discontinued? It takes 55 hours to build a C5, which is 15 hrs less than a C4? A 96 Grand Sports stripe is not the same width all the way? It gets wider as it goes up the hood and is narrower on the top and then gets wider again but not the same width as on the front. That the chief photographer for Chevy, Myron Scott, named the Corvette? Remember all of this and when you talk Corvette by saying did you know? Page 3
