4 2 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Welcome to Ringwood Little Athletics for Season 2017/18. I have to say I am excited heading into this season of Little Athletics at Ringwood. This will be our first full season back at Ringwood following our track redevelopment. The redevelopment has provided us with an elite class track and exceptional new facilities. We are currently in discussion with the council and the other user groups of Ringwood to improve our throws cages - once this is done, Ringwood would rightly be considered one of the best facilities in Victoria, if not Australia. We are also proud to announce that Ringwood will this year provide a multi-class athlete offering. Last year, we offered a trial for multi-class athletes - the trial was extremely successful, so we are looking to broaden our offering this year and make it a formal part of the RLAC Program. Seeing the faces of some of the multi-class athletes was enough to guarantee we would run a permanent program from this year. We are reaching out to various organisations within the community to share our program, and we would love all our families to help spread the word about our multi-class program. We are also re-launching our training and coaching program this year at RLAC. To initially be offered each Wednesday and Sunday, this program will offer athletes the opportunity to further develop and refine their technique and skill at each athletics discipline. We are fortunate enough to have a number of ex-little Athletics, who are now senior Ringwood athletes, available to provide the coaching and training alongside some of our parent coaches. This additional training helps fill a gap we have had in our offering for our younger athletes for a few years now. We are still working through the detail of our offering, so please be on the lookout for information regarding the training and coaching program as we develop the program as the season progresses. As we head into the new season, I am reminded of the Little Ath s slogan of Family, Fun and Fitness. At Ringwood, we pride ourselves on providing a welcoming social atmosphere in which athletes can have fun, develop fitness and do their very best. We also like to think we provide an atmosphere where parents and volunteers can have fun and most importantly, get involved with their children s sport. There are not many sports where parents can get up close and personal with their children while they compete, so we encourage everyone to pitch in and help out each week to ensure our athletes get the most out of their time at Little Athletics. See you at the track, Bryce Sandow President Ringwood Little Athletics Centre Page 4

Each Team has their own colour top with standard black shorts/leggings. Team Heathmont Maroondah Mullum Ringwood Heights Southwood Top Colour Navy Blue Dark Green Red Light Green Yellow 6 AGE GROUPS An athlete s age group for each season is determined by the athlete s age on the 1 st of October. It is important that athletes are placed in the correct age group and it is a requirement of registration that a birth certificate (or other form of age identifying identification) must be sighted by the Registrar JAN * FEB * MAR * APR * JUN * JUL * AUG * SEP * OCT * NOV * DEC * * Any boy or girl can register as a Competitive Member during the Registration Year upon attaining five (5) years of age. Athletes who are 4 cannot register until they turn 5. Note: In the future the date for athlete age group calculations will change to 1 st January. 10 7 SPONSORS / PARTNERS Ringwood Little Athletics Centre would like to thank all our sponsors for their support and for supporting our athletes: Rebel Sport Maroondah Printing Natskin 8 CENTRE INFORMATION 8.1 PARENT PARTICIPATION AND ROSTERS RLAC requires about 70 volunteers each Competition day to ensure all events are available to athletes and that each event is offered a number of times during the season. Without the required number of officials, events may be cancelled or will be delayed, and athletes will miss out. Parents are required to sign-up to assist with an age group or may be asked by their team to complete a special duty. Teams will be responsible for allocating volunteers for canteen and BBQ duty each week. On some special event days (i.e. Centre Games) all families are required to volunteer and a duty will be allocated to each family registered for the special event. Parents must sign-in at the Officials table (located in front of the large grandstand) before going to an event. When parents sign-on they will be given a fluorescent vest to wear while on duty. Only Officials wearing these vests are permitted on the inside of fence and on field at RLAC to ensure everyone s safety. As volunteering is important to ensuring our competition each week, points are allocated to each Team based on the number of parents volunteering each week. The points tally towards the winner of the Harris Award, which is presented at the end of the season. 8.2 CENTRE REGISTRATION FEE REFUND POLICY It is Centre policy to not offer refunds for registration fees. Any extenuating circumstances requiring refunds may be considered by the Executive Committee upon receipt of written request for refund. 8.3 WARM UPS It is essential for all athletes to be at the track and participate in the organised warm-up session at 8:30am on Saturdays, and 5:45pm for twilight competition. Competition starts at Page 10

11 the completion of warm-ups for U6-U10 age groups. Athletes are advised to do warm-up exercises throughout the morning to help prevent muscle injuries. Note: U11 and up athletes may participate in events prior to the warm-up time. If this is the case, it is the athlete s responsibility to warm-up appropriately for their event. 8.4 ADVERSE WEATHER PLAN In the event of an adverse weather event, a decision on the running of, or continuation of, and competition event will be made by the Track & Field Co-ordinator and the Executive Committee. Communications will be sent to all members by 8:00am Saturday or 5.30pm Friday if an early decision is made to cancel a competition due to extreme weather conditions. If you have not received any communications regarding cancellation, competition will be held. If the weather becomes wet or extremely hot during competition time, a decision will be made by the Track & Field Co-ordinator and the Executive Committee to modify or finish the program. During extremely hot conditions, the Committee will make regular announcements about staying hydrated and being Sun Smart. We encourage all parents to ensure that their children are following these guidelines. We encourage parents to make their own decisions regarding whether their children should compete on such days. 8.5 TWILIGHT COMPETITION Each season, we conduct several Twilight Meetings held on Friday evenings, in place of Saturday morning competition. Warm-ups commence at 5:45pm, with competition commencing at 6:00pm. Note: older age groups may commence earlier at 5:30pm for Javelin or Open Throws 8.6 INSURANCE All registered Little Athletes are insured. They are covered during all Centre activities including associated travelling. Where sanctioned, volunteers are insured whilst they are engaged in Centre activities or associated duties. Note: When attending the Centre or other LA Vic approved activities at Proclamation Park; insurance does NOT cover non-athletics activities. An excess does apply on any one claim. Claim forms are available from the Centre Secretary and the LA Vic office. To minimise the risk of injury, athletes are advised to follow Competition Regulations and to warm up before events. Age Group Managers and Coaches can help athletes with recommended stretching exercises. It is very important that all athletes arrive at the track at Page 11

12 least 15 minutes before the beginning of Competition to participate in the organised Warmup Session. 8.7 CANTEEN AND BBQ The smooth running of the Canteen and BBQ each week is essential to the ongoing future of RLAC, as this is our main source of fundraising throughout the season. Please support both the Canteen and the BBQ by purchasing items. 8.8 FIRST AID A qualified First Aid Officer will be in attendance at Centre competitions. If for some reason this person is unable to attend, an announcement will be made requesting names of any persons at the venue with a current First Aid Certificate. In the absence of anyone coming forward, the parent is then responsible. 9 COMMUNICATION Should you require information, or want to raise an issue, please see your Team Manager in the first instance. Team Managers will often be able to assist you immediately and they represent you on the Centre Committee. To keep you informed as to what is happening around the Centre and how you can help your athletes achieve the most from Little Athletics, RLAC communicates via a number of channels: Noticeboard at the track Weekly Newsletter (during the Track & Field season) TeamApp Facebook (Public page and closed group) 10 CENTRE COMMITTEE MEETINGS It is important that all members of the Centre Committee attend these meetings, and that each Team has at least one representative in attendance. These meetings are where all the decisions and planning take place for the future direction of RLAC. These meetings are the ideal forum to raise ideas and make suggestions regarding the general running of the Centre. Meetings are open to all parents of athletes and interested persons. Page 12

27 18 AUSTRALIAN LITTLE ATHLETIC CHAMPIONSHIPS The Australian Little Athletics Championships (ALAC) is a National Competition conducted at the end of the Track and Field season each year. It is team based, with each competitor awarded points for their performance which contribute to their State s total score. There are also individual medals for the U13 athlete s events. A team of 22 athletes from U13 is selected to represent Victoria. The selection is made from the athlete s performances at both Region and State Track and Field Championships. An athlete must compete at the State Championships to be eligible for selection in the Victorian team. At the same time there is a Multi-event competition for U15 athletes with 2 boys and 2 girls chosen to represent each state. An athlete must compete in State Multi-Championships and place in the top 4 in their age group to be eligible for selection. As with all multi-event competitions there are no medals for individual events just the overall top 3 placegetters. Over the years Ringwood has been well represented in these teams both by athletes and Team management positions. Many of Ringwood s coaches have also assisted with the training of these teams. 19 STATE EVENT RESULTS STATE RELAY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015 We had 28 Ringwood athletes competing on the blue track at Albert Park for the State Relay championships.
