1 Basketball Rules Rule 1: Eligibility Any rule nt specifically cvered will be gverned in accrdance with the NFHS Basketball Rules. Mdificatins have been made t suit the Suthern Methdist University Intramural Prgram. SMU Intramurals Any individual with an active Dedman Center membership is eligible t participate in intramurals. This includes all full time students enrlled at SMU and faculty, staff, alumni, and cmmunity members wh have purchased a Dedman Center membership. Additinal parameters are set fr cllegiate and prfessinal players: Varsity Athletes: Current varsity basketball athletes are ineligible t cmpete in intramural basketball. A varsity athlete s status is determined by the fficial rster after the team s first cntest f the year. Frmer varsity basketball athletes must sit ut fr a full academic year prir t participating in that intramural basketball. Prfessinal Athletes: Prfessinal basketball athletes are ineligible t cmpete in intramural basketball. Once a prfessinal basketball athlete cmpletes their career, they must wait tw academic years prir t participating in intramural basketball. Identificatin: All intramural participants must present their SMU ID at every game t intramural staff in rder t check in fr play. If a participant des nt have their SMU ID, but already appear n the rster, they may check in utilizing any state issued ID. Scial media sites will nt be an acceptable frm f check in fr intramural play. If a participant attempts t utilize an ID that des nt belng t them, it will be cnfiscated by intramural staff. The rightful wner may cme t the game site r the intramural ffice t pick up their ID. Each participant invlved must meet with the Assistant Directr f Intramurals and Sprt Clubs in rder t discuss further participatin in the intramural prgram. Rule 2: Leagues Open: Teams may be cmprised f any gender rati. A player may cmpete n tw pen teams unless they als cmpete n a Fraternity League team. If they cmpete n a fraternity league team, they are limited t ne pen team. CRec: Teams must meet a pre-determined n field/curt gender rati dependent upn the sprt. Participants may nly cmpete n ne CRec team. Wmen s: Teams may nly be cmprised f wmen. Participants may nly cmpete n ne Wmen s team. Fraternity: Teams may nly be cmprised by members f their fraternity. Only ne fraternity team is eligible. Any player wh participates in the fraternity league may nly participate n ne pen league team. Rule 3: Equipment Teams must wear numbered shirts r jerseys t cmpete in Intramural Basketball, the shirts/jerseys must be similar in clr and have unique (n repeats) numbers with n digit in the number being larger than 5. Fr example, 45, 55, 32, 12, and 5 are all examples f legal numbers Jerseys may be checked ut fr an entire team by prviding ne ID t the IM staff member n duty in the jersey check ut windw. A recrd f the jerseys will be taken and they must all be returned prperly. Failure t return all jerseys in the same cnditin they were check ut in, will result in a $12 fee per jersey. Participants must wear a shirt under the intramural jersey. 1

2 Athletic attire is required Jewelry is nt allwed; including necklaces, wedding rings, bracelets, etc. All players must wear athletic shes with nn-marking sles Rubber, clth, r elastic bands may be used t cntrl hair. Hard items such as beads, barrettes, and bbby pins are nt permitted. A guard, cast, r brace made f hard and unyielding leather, plaster, pliable plastic, metal, r any ther hard substance, even thugh cvered with fam padding, is nt permitted n the finger, hand, wrist, frearm, r elbw. Knee and ankle braces that are unaltered frm the manufacturer s riginal design/prductin shall be permitted and d nt require additinal padding. Knee and ankle braces that are altered frm the manufacturer s riginal design/prductin shall be permitted as lng as they are sft and yielding r all expsed metal and ther hard parts are padded with at least ½-inch fam rubber (r ¼ inch clsed cell, slw recvery fam rubber). A team may start a cntest with as few as fur players. If a team drps belw the minimum number f players required t play after the game has started, they may cntinue t cmpete s lng as they have an pprtunity t win. Substitutins Substitutes must check in at the screr s table prir t entering the cntest and must wait t enter the cntest until an fficial has beckned them nt the flr. Substitutes shall be permitted t enter the cntest when play stps fr timeuts, befre the last free thrw, after the last made free thrw, when the ball ges ut f bunds, after fuls, and after vilatins. 2

3 If a player is shting free thrws, they may nt be substituted fr until the next pprtunity after they have cmpleted their free thrws unless they are physically unable t cntinue. In this situatin, the substitute shall sht the free thrws. During the same dead ball interval n player shall withdraw and then re-enter as a substitute. Time must run ff the clck prir t re-entry. Rule 6: Frfeits/Defaults In rder t keep the intramural schedule running n time, game time is frfeit time. The team r individual present may chse t give the ppnent additinal time t arrive, hwever the game clck will start. If the ppnent arrives, the game will be played in the time remaining. Once the game is started, the result will be the fficial scre. Any team frfeiting/defaulting tw scheduled cntests in a majr sprt will be drpped frm further cmpetitin in that sprt. A frfeit fee f $25 will be charged t the team captain fr all cntests in which his/her team frfeits during the seasn. The team will nt be permitted t cntinue play until the frfeit fee is paid. Teams may default ne cntest per seasn by cntacting the intramural ffice (intramurals@smu.edu r (214) ) by 3 p.m. n the day f their scheduled cntest fr week day games r by 5 p.m. n the Friday befre a weekend cntest. Yu will receive a lss fr this cntest but nt be charged a frfeit fee. Rule 7: Prtests If a team r individual believes that an intramural sprt rule r eligibility plicy has been vilated, they have an pprtunity t immediately prtest. If it is a rule prtest, the team captain r individual must ntify the fficiating crew immediately that they wish t prtest that play. If the desire t prtest is nt made knwn t the fficiating crew prir t the next play, then the prtest cannt be made. If it is an eligibility plicy prtest, the team captain r individual must make the prtest prir t the cmpletin f the cntest. If the prtest is made after the cntest, the scre will stand, but the player will still be subject t review by the intramural ffice fr any sanctins. Exceptin: If an ineligible player plays in a champinship game, if it is prtested within 24 hurs f the cntest, the champinship team will be stripped f their title. The runner up will be recgnized as the champin. A rule prtest will be reslved by the supervisr n duty and a reprt will be filed with the game time and situatin recrded, as well as the reslutin t the prtest. All prtests will be reviewed the next day in the intramural ffice; if the prtest was incrrectly reslved the game may be replayed frm the pint f interruptin by the prtest. Rule 8: Play Start f Cntest The game shall begin with a captain s meeting with the fficials. After the captain s meeting, players shall take the curt and the game will start with a jump ball at the center circle. Teams shall sht at the basket ppsite their bench in the first half and then switch at the start f the secnd half. Timing Games will cnsist f tw 20 minute halves 3

4 Half time shall be n lnger than three minutes The clck shall run cntinuusly except in the last minute f the first and secnd half. The clck will then stp fr all whistles. Each team is allwed tw (2) time-uts per half f 30 secnds in length. One (1) timeut is permitted in each ver time perid. Timeuts d nt carry ver frm half t half r ver time perid t ver time perid. There will be n ver time in regular seasn cntests. Over time during playffs will be a tw (2) minute perid. Clck will run in the first minute, but stp fr all whistles in the last minute. Additinal ver time perids shall be played if the scre remains tied at the end f the ver time perid. Scring A try r attempt fr gal frm n r within the 3 pint line is wrth 2 pints. A try r attempt fr gal frm utside the 3 pint line is wrth 2 pints. If a successful try r attempt fr gal is released prir t the hrn sunding fr the end f the perid r Mercy Rule If a team is ahead by 20 r mre pints with tw minutes r less remaining in the game, the game shall be called. At the end f the first half r at any pint in the secnd half, if a team is ahead by 40 pints r mre the game will be called. Pssessin A jump ball will be administered t start the game and every extra perid. Alternating pssessins will be awarded in all ther held ball situatins and t start the secnd half. Live Ball and Dead Ball The ball becmes live when: it leaves the referee s hand fr the jump ball it is at the dispsal f the thrwer fr a thrw-in it is at the dispsal f the free thrwer fr a free thrw The becmes dead r remains dead when: a gal is scred a held ball ccurs r a ball becmes ldged between the backbard and ring r cmes t a rest n the flange a player r team cntrl ful ccurs time expires, an fficial blws their whistle, a nn-player r nn-team cntrl ful ccurs in all f these cases except when: a try r tap fr a field gal r free thrw is in flight a free-thrw vilatin by the thrwing team ccurs a vilatin ccurs Out f Bunds A player is ut f bunds when they cntact the flr r any ther bject ther than a player/persn n r utside a bundary line. The ball is ut f bunds when it is cntacted by a player, persn, the flr, r any bject that is utside a bundary. The ball is ut f bunds when it cntacts the supprts r back f the backbard, the ceiling, r the verhead equipment/supprts. Vilatins & Penalties Fr the fllwing vilatins, a thrw-in will be awarded t the ffended team ut f bunds at the lcatin f the vilatin: 4

5 Thrw-in vilatins include leaving the designated thrw-in spt; handing the ball inbunds; carrying the ball nt the curt; thrwing the ball directly int the gal withut being tuched by anther player inbunds; the ppnent reaching thrugh the ut-f-bunds bundary; and taking mre than five secnds t release the ball. Travel: A player hlding the ball may nt mve a ft r feet in excess f the limits prescribed. Kick: A player may nt kick r strike the ball with any part f their leg r ft. Illegal Dribble: A player may nt dribble a secnd time after their first dribble has ended unless the player has lst cntrl due t a try fr gal, tuch by an ppnent, r pass r fumble that has been tuched by anther player. A player may nt palm r carry the ball during a dribble. Three Secnds: When the ball is in the frntcurt, an ffensive player may nly be in the lane fr three secnds. An exceptin may be made fr a player wh has been in the lane fr less than three secnds and dribbles r mves immediately t try fr a gal. 10 Secnds: The ffensive team has 10 secnds t mve the ball frm the backcurt t the frntcurt when pssessin is gained r regained in the backcurt. Backcurt: If the ball travels frm the frntcurt t the backcurt, the team in cntrl f the ball shall nt be the first team t tuch the ball in the backcurt. Clsely Guarded: When a player is legally guarded by a defensive player within six feet, that player shall nt hld the ball fr five secnds r dribble fr five secnds. Excessive Swinging f Elbws: A player may nt excessively swing their elbws. Free Thrws The first marked lane spaces n each side f the lane, abve and adjacent t the neutral-zne marks (the blck), shall be ccupied by ppnents f the free thrwer. N teammate f free thrwer shall ccupy either f these marked spaces. The secnd marked spaces may be ccupied by teammates f the free thrwer The third marked spaces n each side, nearest the free thrwer, may be ccupied by the ppnents f the free thrwer. Shter must take the sht attempt within 10 secnds f receiving the ball. If the sht is nt successful, the shter must hit the rim, therwise the shter has vilated. Players in a marked lane space may enter the lane and/r leave their marked lane space when the ball is released by the shter. The shter and players utside the three pint line and abve the free thrw line extended may nt enter until the ball tuches the ring r backbard r until the free thrw ends. Penalty fr vilating free thrw restrictins: Shting team vilates: Sht is canceled immediately Mve n t next sht r award the ball ut f bunds t the ppnent Nn-shting team vilates: If the sht is missed, the shter shall be awarded anther sht. If the sht is made, play shall cntinue withut interruptin. Fuls and Penalties Players are allwed five (5) persnal fuls befre fuling ut. Incidental cntact (cntact that des nt hinder an ffensive r defensive player frm nrmal mvement) is allwed; hwever, cntact in the fllwing frms by a players arm(s) r leg(s) is restricted: Hlding Pushing Charging Hitting Blcking Tripping 5

6 The penalty fr a cmmn ful is the ball awarded fr a thrw-in at the spt nearest the ful. Shting fuls will result in tw (2), r three (3) ful shts. If the field gal was made n a shting ful, the player is awarded ne (l) ful sht. All cmmn and persnal fuls will be cunted against a team ttal. On the seventh team ful f each half; a bnus (ne and ne ful shts) will be awarded fr the remainder f that half. On the tenth team ful f the half a duble bnus (tw fuls shts) will be awarded fr the remainder f the half. The bnus is nt in effect fr the ppnents n a team cntrl ful (ffensive player has pssessin f the ball when ful is cmmitted by ANYONE n the ffensive team). All player cntrl fuls will result in NO basket and lss f pssessin. All fuls d carry ver int vertime; this includes team, technical, and persnal. Intentinal Fuls An intentinal ful is ne which des nt appear t be a legitimate attempt t play the ball. This has been expanded t include a player causing excessive cntact (hard ful) while playing the ball. This is a judgement call by the fficial and cannt be prtested. Penalty: 2 pints and pssessin - NO free thrws will be awarded. Technical Fuls A nn-cntact ful, which invlves unsprtsmanlike behavir f any srt; but specifically includes prfanity, bscene gestures, and abusive r bscene language, will be cnsidered a technical ful. All Technical fuls given directly t a player will als result in an autmatic yellw card, as related t the IM sprtsmanship plicy. Tw technical fuls n ne player will result in that player s autmatic ejectin/red card. These fuls include unsprtsmanlike cnduct plus dunking/grasping the rim. THREE UNSPORTSMANLIKE TECHNICAL FOULS ON THE SAME TEAM WILL RESULT IN THE GAME BEING FORFEITED BY THAT TEAM. Penalty: 2 pints will be awarded, and pssessin at mid curt -- NO free thrws will be sht. Flagrant Fuls A persnal ful that invlves any f the fllwing: Vilent cntact with an ppnent (including striking with the elbw, kicking, kneeing, r mving under a player wh is in the air) in a manner that might cause severe injury t the ppnent. Extreme verbal, smetimes persistent, vulgar, abusive cnduct. This is a judgement call by the fficial and cannt be prtested. Penalty: 2 pints, pssessin at the spt nearest the spt f the ful, and autmatic ejectin/red card f ffending player- NO free thrws will be sht. Rule 9: Sprtsmanship Unsprtsmanlike Cnduct A Technical Ful will be assessed t any individual wh cmmits the fllwing actins: Refusal t cmply r abide by the request r decisin f an fficial Unsprting cnduct n r ff the curt Participate while wearing illegal equipment Any persistent use f vulgar r prfane language Any disrderly cnduct t the ppsing players The team may receive a technical fr spectatr behavir A player receiving an unsprtsmanlike penalty must be remved frm the game until the next substitutin pprtunity. The team is nt required t play dwn a player if they have a substitute available. Ejectin 6

7 A ejectin will be assessed t any individual wh cmmits the fllwing actins: Flagrant unsprting cnduct Vilent cnduct Vulgar language directed at the fficial(s) Nn-basketball play Flagrant play with intent t injure Receives a secnd technical ful Intentinally cntacting an fficial Fighting an ppnent Flagrant Persnal Ful A player receiving an ejectin must be remved frm the game. The player must leave the facility immediately. Rule 10: CRec Mdificatins Number f Players First Half: teams shall play with a maximum f 3 men and 2 wmen n the curt. Secnd Half: teams shall play with a maximum f 2 men and 3 wmen n the curt. A game may start with fur players, as lng as they stay within the maximum limits f men/wmen. Scring A regulatin wmen s basketball will be used in all C-Rec. games. There are n lane restrictins fr men in C-Rec basketball. All players can enter the lane at any time. Wmen s baskets are wrth 3 and 4 instead f 2 and 3. (The nly exceptin is free-thrws where a single pint is given). If a wman is rewarded a shting ful inside the three-pint-arc she will sht 3 free-thrws. If a wman is rewarded a shting ful while attempting a three-pint field gal, she will sht 4 ful shts. If a wman is awarded a ful sht after making a basket, she will be rewarded nly ne ful sht. Rule 11: Playffs Teams wh d nt frfeit/default mre than twice during a seasn AND have a minimum 3.0 sprtsmanship rating average will qualify fr playffs. The sprtsmanship rating average is based n the regular seasn cntests. Playffs cnsist f a single eliminatin bracket fr each league. Games will be scheduled n Sundays between the hurs f 3:30 and 11:30 p.m. and Mnday thrugh Thursday between the hurs f 6:30 and 11:30 p.m. Captains will have an pprtunity t prvide their teams cnflicts. While the intramural ffice cannt guarantee that all cnflicts can be avided, it will d it s best t accmmdate team schedules.
