1 C R O W R I V E R Y O U T H H O C K E Y A S S O C I A T I N ~ C R Y HA Tiger Hockey Newsletter November 2010 Vice Presidents Letter The hockey season is upon us. Our upper levels have been on the ice for several weeks following try-outs and our Initiation Program levels will be starting over the next couple of weeks. Thank you to all the volunteers that helped in our planning and preparation for the new season. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Also, a big thanks to Rick Ragan, Kevin Voss and the entire Delano Area Sports Center (DASA) team & Board. We have an exciting year ahead. Our program continues to receive a lot of interest from families in the Delano and Rockford school districts. Last year Crow River Youth Hockey had a record year for player participation. We are still processing registrations for our Initiation Program and Jr. Gold team for this season. Though it appears that our player participation will be off slightly from last year, our program is strong and healthy. Our commitment to grow girls hockey has been well received. We will have more girls playing hockey this year than a year ago. Our high school continues to co-op with Buffalo school district for JV/ Varsity hockey. We are excited to be hosting a girls JV/ Varsity game in our arena this year. The level of interest in the 8U and 10U program is outstanding, surpassing last year s registration. Our player participation at Mites and Termites is fantastic and we anticipate another strong year of interest for the Intro to Hockey program. These hockey players are the future to our program. As many of you are aware, Minnesota Hockey s redistricting has placed our association into District 3 for our traveling teams. This is exciting news for Crow River & Delano hockey. Our Bantam and PeeWee teams have begun playing D3 games. This year we will be playing Armstrong Cooper, Hopkins, Mound Westonka, North Metro, Orono, Osseo Maple Grove, St. Louis Park, Southwest, Washburn and Wayzata. Our association has had a goal for several years to move to District 3. You will quickly notice the increased competition and speed of the game. Wayzata and Osseo Maple Grove will bring stiff competition. With that said, we believe we will be competitive in District play. Long term, this will have a very positive impact on our program and increase our level of competitiveness at the High School level too. Our Hockey Development Committee (HDC) has been reevaluating all aspects of our on-ice development plan and has worked hard to align consistent skill development across all teams at each level. You will also notice that we have a higher percentage of non-parent head coaches/ coaches this year. Again, this aligns with our goals to improve our on-ice development and competitiveness. Planning for growth can be challenging in the current economic environment. As our player participation has seen significant growth, it has put a tremendous amount of pressure on our ice availability. We remain committed to building a second sheet of ice. Details were shared during a special meeting this past summer and again at our annual parent meeting. Key volunteers, under the leadership of Jim Kruse, have made significant strides in our second sheet plans. The Delano school board and Delano city leadership are supportive of our plans to build a 2/3 practice sheet of ice. The team has also reviewed financing options and our fundraising efforts are underway. Our new CRYHA calendar has the potential to raise a significant amount of funds towards this initiative. The response to these calendars has been outstanding. We will share more details throughout the winter. It is our intent to begin to take action this spring. And finally, please reflect on why we continue to commit the time, money and effort to this game. It s really fairly simple. It s for the KIDS! It s all about their development as players, as people, and for their enjoyment. Remember, as hockey parents, be a positive role model and encourage your child to always give 100% effort, to listen to their coach and have FUN. Hard work and enjoyment go hand in hand, which will ultimately lead to success on the ice. Make it a fantastic year...let S PLAY HOCKEY!
