BU Advances Past Fairfield in NCAA Play-In Six different players scored as Patriot League champion Boston University got past MAAC champion Fairfield 6-1 in the NCAA Field Hockey Play-In round on Wednesday at New Balance Field. The Terriers scored twice early and added another goal in the first half for a 3-0 lead, then built it to 4-0 early in the second half and completed the scoring with a pair of late goals. BU earned its fifth NCAA Tournament win, and first since BU in the NCAA Tournament Boston University is in the NCAA Tournament for the 12th time, and second-consecutive season. The Terriers fell 2-1 at No. 4 Syracuse in last year s first round. BU has a 5-12 record in its NCAA Tournament contests, with the most recent first-round win coming in 2007 when it defeated Iowa. Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a wellrounded education. Patriot League in the NCAA Tournament The Patriot League has recorded a pair of NCAA Tournament wins outside of the Play-In game, with both coming in the first round. American earned the wins in back-to-back seasons in 2004 and 2005, beating Iowa and Penn State, respectively. Patriot League squads are 2-10 all-time in the first round, with Saturday s matchup as the first against North Carolina. BU Claims Second-Straight Patriot League Title Boston University won the Patriot League title for the second straight season as it knocked off American 2-1 in the League Championship on Saturday. The Terriers had advanced to the League title game by defeating Bucknell 3-2 in double overtime in Friday s semifinals. Sofi Laurito scored all three goals in the contest and was named Patriot League Tournament MVP. Terriers Earned First Regular-Season Crown Boston University claimed the Patriot League regular-season title for the first time by going 6-0 in League action. The Terriers ran through the Patriot League schedule in dominating fashion by outscoring their opponents Terriers Lead the Way for Patriot League Awards Boston University had three Patriot League individual award winners last week. Sofi Laurito was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, while Rachel Coll claimed the League s Defensive Player of the Year award and Sally Starr was selected as Patriot League Coach of the Year. Laurito, Coll and Hester van der Laan each earned first-team All-Patriot League honors, while Taylor Blood and Amanda Cassera made the second team. Coll and van der Laan also made the Academic All- Patriot League squad. Coll, van der Laan and Bea Baumberger Alitrriba joined Laurito on the All-Tournament Team. BU took control of the game early with a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes. Amanda Cassera put in a pass from Taylor Blood for a 1-0 lead at the 3:14 mark, while Sofi Laurito fired in an unassisted goal at 8:48 to make it a 2-0 game. BU pushed the lead to 3-0 at 29:37 when Ally Hammel scored off a pass from Kara Enoch. The Terriers added to the lead early in the second half when Kali Shumock scored an unassisted goal at 38:05. MAAC champion Fairfield got on the board at the 60:50 mark, but the Terriers iced the win with two more goals as Rachel Feig scored from Hester van der Laan at 63:02 and Blood completed the scoring with an unassisted goal at 65:29. Boston University earned its first NCAA Tournament win since 2007, and fifth in school history. The Terriers posted the sixth Play-In round victory for a Patriot League squad Patriot League Tournament Recap Championship: #1 Boston University 2, #2 American 1 (Saturday) Boston University scored a pair of first-half goals and went on to a 2-1 win over American in the Patriot League Field Hockey Championship on Saturday at New Balance Field to claim its second-straight League title. Grace Boston scored at the 17:20 mark off an assist from Amanda Cassera to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead, and Sara Martineau followed at 26:16 to pad the advantage to 2-0. Second-seed American (12-7) cut the margin to 2-1 when Natalie Konerth scored at the 52:48 mark, but BU held off the Eagles the rest of the way to repeat as champion. Semifinal: #1 Boston University 3, #4 Bucknell 2 (2OT) (Friday) Sofi Laurito scored all three goals for Boston University, including the game-winner in double overtime, to lead the top-seed Terriers past fourth-seed Bucknell 3-2 in the Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament semifinals. Laurito scored the unassisted goal from the right side from 10 yards out as BU won in the 90th minute. She had put Boston University ahead after the Terriers faced an early deficit, with Bucknell taking a 1-0 lead when Emily Goodloe scored off a corner at 18:25. Laurito came back and tied the score 54 seconds later when she scored at the top of the circle at 19:19. The senior, who was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, put BU ahead 2-1 when she tallied at the 44:42 mark. Bucknell tied the score at 2-2 late in regulation when Kiersten Sydnor scored off a feed from Kayla Sullivan in the 67th minute. Semifinal: #2 American 4, #3 Lafayette 2 (Friday) Rafaela Rubas tallied two goals and an assist as #2 seed American rallied from an early two-goal deficit to top #3 Lafayette by a 4-2 final in the Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament semifinals on Friday at New Balance Field. Lafayette took an early 2-0 lead, bu trubas brought American back with two goals before the half to even the score. American brought the stalemate when it earned a penalty stroke and Natalie Konerth converted for a 3-2 lead at the 50:45 mark.
