September 2012 Newsletter Friedens are 2012 Hall of Fame Honorees Rich and Judy Frieden, Elgin, were inducted into the Iowa Hereford Hall of Fame during the IHBA s annual meeting on Aug. 25. Association President Steve Landt (left) made the presentation. Raising cattle is a family business! At least it is in the Rich and Judy Frieden family. They are a part of six generations of raising Hereford cattle on the same Century Farm in Fayette County. It started in 1912 when Judy s grandfather, H.W. Helms, purchased the farm ¼ mile west of Elgin, bringing with him his horned Hereford cattle. For 100 years, there have always been Herefords grazing on the hillside pastures. Judy s parents, Clive and Beth Helms, joined the horned Hereford operation when they were married and Rich and Judy took over the farm in 1973, increasing the size to 330 acres and converting it to a Polled Hereford cow-calf operation. Prior to that, the family had spent five years in Ohio, where Rich managed a Polled Hereford ranch. He would spend the summer months on the road with the show herd while Judy and the girls did chores and checked pastures. Their three daughters Deb, Dawn and Cindy recall adventures like getting to camp out in the back of the cattle truck with fresh straw and stacks of quilts and eating picnic lunches on the show box. During that time the Poll-ettes were organizing and Judy was a charter member of the Ohio Poll-ettes. When they returned to northeast Iowa, the girls continued to help with cattle chores on the Hereford Hills Farm with their parents and the entire family was involved in the Polled Hereford Association activities. Rich was vice president of the Iowa Polled Hereford Association and then became president in He was also president of the Hawkeye Polled Hereford Association. Judy was active in the Poll-ettes and Deb, Dawn and Cindy showed heifers at the local fairs and at junior shows and Nationals. The girls each went off to college but have returned with their families and are living within 5 miles of the home farm. (continued on next page)

Rich is a charter member of the Fayette County Cattlemen s Association and the Friedens were inducted into the Fayette County Hall of Fame in The Frieden family support was again evident as their entire family attended the banquet including their three daughters and husbands, all 10 grandchildren, granddaughter-in-law and three great-grandchildren. In the year and a half since then, the family has celebrated four grandchildren s weddings, the birth of a great-granddaughter and are waiting for another any day now. The entire family is an active part of the workforce but nowadays the cattle are brought in to be worked with 4-wheelers; haying time is scheduled around family activities and cattle chute work is scheduled around school calendars. The herd size has fluctuated over the years and the family numbers have grown. Rich and Judy still take care of the feeding, calving and caring for their beautiful red whitefaced cattle each day. They celebrated their 53 rd wedding anniversary on Valentine s Day and still enjoy checking the pastures together and watching the cattle grazing on the hills. The Hereford Hills farm s current herd sires are a son and grandson of Remitall 122L and the cow herd includes Wrangler and Stockman bloodlines. Rich and Judy have said probably the greatest part of being involved with the Hereford cattle business is all the wonderful friends they have made throughout the years. Watching the young people show cattle, grow up and bring yet another generation into the Hereford business makes attending these events a lot of fun. 3 Harms Scholarship to Knapp IMPORTANT DIRECTORY INFORMATION Work is underway on the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association Directory, which will be again be published by the American Hereford Association s Creative Services. New This Year: The entire directory will be printed in 4-color. This year s winner of the Richard F. Harms Memorial Scholarship is Alecia Knapp of Waverly. The daughter of Chris and Shannon Knapp, she is an animal science major at the University of Wisconsin in Platteville and was the 2011 Iowa Hereford Queen and first runnerup in the National Hereford Queen contest. IHBA President Steve Landt presented the award during the Hereford show at the Iowa State Fair. Report County Champions Each year, the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association recognizes young people who have exhibited a champion Hereford (horned or polled) heifer or steer at their county fair. The official County Champion Hereford Report Form must be completed by local Extension personnel and submitted to the IHBA administrative secretary by Oct. 1. Plaques are given at the local county 4-H awards day. To date, the following counties have reported their having one or more Hereford champions: Buchanan, Cedar, Clayton, Fayette, Hardin, Iowa, Johnson, Kossuth, Lucas, Marion, Muscatine, Plymouth, Scott and Washington. If your county is not listed and you exhibited a champion Hereford, know who did or sold a calf that was champion at a county that is not listed, please contact the Extension office and ask them to submit the form ASAP. AHA Annual Meeting Delegates Named Iowans have elected Jim Kuhlman, Mason City; Steve Landt, Union; and Dave Wiese, Manning, as the state s voting delegates to the American Hereford Association s annual meeting, Nov. 2-3 in Kansas City. Approximately 6,500 copies will be printed, with some 5,400 direct-mailed to cowcalf producers in Iowa, an additional 150 sent to county and state Extension staff and primary sale barn operators and another 200+ to Iowa Hereford adult and junior members. Here s how you can help make this endeavor a success and promote your herd: Advertising Two forms are included in this newsletter a claim sheet for prime pages and a reservation form for other advertising. We will again sell the prime pages via a claim process which is explained on the form. Claims must be in the editors hands by Oct. 2. Regardless of the size of your herd, advertising rates are a bargain. Broken down, a 1-page ad will cost you about a nickel a contact spread out over 2 years! Reservation deadline is Oct. 15. Final advertising deadline (copy & payment) is Nov. 1. Membership Annual dues are $50 per calendar year; everyone who pays 2013 dues by Nov. 1 will receive a free basic listing in the directory. Expanded listing information is available for an additional $25 fee. A membership/listing form is printed elsewhere in this newsletter. If you re planning to join or renew your membership, why not do it now so you ll be in the directory? We currently have approximately 125 members let s have them all listed! PLEASE NOTE: It is very important that all deadlines be complied with in order to meet the production schedule.

Thanks to Denise and Craig Amos for overseeing the development of these great promotional pieces and to Parker Signs of Indianola for producing them at a very reasonable price. Fall Co-Op Ad to Debut Seventeen breeders took advantage of a new co-op advertising opportunity offered by the IHBA board to help breeders with calves to sell. Look for an appealing 4-color 2-page spread in the October issue of Livestock Plus. Goin to the Chapel Ron and Cheryl Beaver, Clarinda, are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Sarah, to Tyler DeBour, son of Randy and Sue DeBour of Latimer. Sarah teaches vo-ag at CAL Community and Hampton-Dumont Schools; Tyler is an electrician. A June 1 wedding is planned.

Gammon Barn Sees Lots of Visitors Seuferer Lauded Mild temperatures during the State Fair and increased awareness contributed to a large influx of visitors to the Gammon Barn museum during the fair s 11-day run. Chairman Ray Dittmer reports that there were 1,030 signatures in the guest book, but he estimates that probably 30% of the people of the people who came in failed to sign. The association thanks Ray for his tireless efforts in recruiting and overseeing volunteers and working on display improvements. Thanks also to the following volunteers who hosted the museum during the fair: Scott Amendt Denise Amos Heidi Dittmer Twila Godbersen Eileen Hixson Diane Honecker Dave Larson Jerry Lynch Mark Ohrt Grant Seuferer Rande Seuferer Becky Simpson Nathan Stickley Sue Stream Janet Wiechert Rande Seuferer (center) of Milo was recognized during the State Fair Hereford show for his many years of outstanding service as chairman of the Gammon Barn. IHBA President Steve Landt (left) presented him with a plaque and also noted the many hours contributed by Rande s son, Grant (right). Looking for Technical Assistance In an effort to help preserve many of the archival records in the Gammon Barn, the National Hereford Women have made a financial donation to the IHBA for the purchase of a scanner. The board is looking for volunteers to assist with the scanning during the offseason. If you would be willing to help with this project, contact Becky Simpson at or Steve Landt, New Booth Rolled Out at State Fair One visitor with a vested interest in the displays was Joan LaRue of New Sharon, who found the hand-drawn portrait of her father, Iowa Hall of Famer Roy Van Heukelom, among the pencil sketches of national Pioneer Breeders. The IHBA s brand-new, easy-to-assemble table-top booth made its debut at the State Fair. The classy, more modern display replaces one that had been in use since 1987.

Tour Visits Northeast Iowa A perfect fall day in northeast Iowa greeted attendees of the 2012 Iowa Hereford Tour on Saturday, Aug. 25. Although one herd, Knapp Cattle Company of Waverly, had to pull out as a stop due to herd health issues, there was still plenty to see and do (and eat!) on the three host farms. Tour chairman Mark Ohrt (right) started the day s proceedings by introducing Marilyn Lenth (left), who with her husband, Doug, and Doug s mother, Bea, run Lenth Herefords at Postville. Prior to seeing the large herd, guests were treated to coffee, juice and homemade coffee cakes and rolls. A Hall of Fame moment! Four Hall of Famers Bea Lenth (2002), Dan McFarland (2008) and this year s inductees Rich and Judy Frieden do some catching up during lunch at McFarland Hereford Farms, Fredericksburg. Dan had cattle on display, as did his grandson, Jon Macken, and those not wishing to participate in the annual meeting were treated to a tour of Dan s other livestock venture, Hawkeye Buffalo Ranch. The Lenths had their cattle organized into various lots both at the house and across the road, making for a picturesque setting. Visitors were also challenged to guess the weight of the heaviest cow in the herd, who weighed in at well over a ton. Guests were treated to a sumptuous lunch of steak sandwiches grilled by the Chickasaw County Cattlemen and served by Jerry and Sue Macken (left). Also on the menu were baked beans, potato salad and mini cheesecakes, all homemade.

Modern facilities and an impressive array of embryo transplant cows were featured at the final stop, Mike and Sue Kirchhoff s Bar S Farms near Sumner. The highlight of the stop, though, was an array of homemade pies, all served with ice cream! Door prizes were awarded at every stop, with winners needing to be present to win. The big prize was saved for the very end, as an incentive to those who stayed for the duration of the tour. Here hosts Mike and Sue Kirchhoff (left) congratulate grand prize winner Doug Lane of Spragueville and his daughter Cambrie, who went home with a collectible Jim Shore cornucopia featuring a farm scene. To Do List: Send in Expo nomination form by Oct. 1. Decide on bid(s) for directory prime pages and submit by Oct. 2. Pay membership dues; send in listing information by Nov. 1. Reserve directory advertising by Oct. 15. Send in ad copy by Nov. 1. Thank You Thank you for sponsoring Division I of the bred and owned bulls (at the Junior National Hereford Expo). The clipper box is the coolest. I already have all my clippers put inside the box. My brothers are really jealous. Thank you, Burk Van Horn Morgantown, IN Thank you, IHBA President Steve Landt, for surprising me with such a nice plaque during the open Hereford show at the Iowa State Fair. I am humbled and feel quite fortunate to have been recognized by the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association for my tenure as chairman of the Gammon Barn. Sincerely, Rande Seuferer We wanted to drop you a note and tell you how much we appreciated our first trip to the Iowa State Fair. It was a great experience and one we really enjoyed. The facilities are great and convenient. Our grandson had a super time on the wonderful state fairgrounds. The people of Iowa have a great facility to be extremely proud of. We truly have treasured our visits to the Iowa Beef Expo and look forward to returning in Just like we witnessed at the recent Iowa State Fair, the breeders are wonderful, hospitable and a joy to visit with. Thanks for all you do and we look forward to the future Iowa Hereford events we plan to attend.
