1 October 2017 Newsletter Hereford Steer Raises $12,650 For Ronald McDonald House El Macho, raised by Jacob Smith (right) of Newton, was the IHBA s entry into this year s Governor s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. Celebrity show person for the fourth straight year was U.S. Senator Joni Ernst. The 25 steers in the event were auctioned following the show, with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. All the houses are located near hospitals and provide a home away from home for families of seriously ill children. El Macho was the highest-earning Hereford entry to date, bringing a total of $12,650. Mogler Farms of Alvord, Iowa, had the top bid of $6,500, to which was added $6,150 raised by the Smith family and the IHBA. Sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen s Association, this was the 35 th Charity Show and it was a recordbreaker. Not only was it the highest-selling auction at a total of $274,000, but it also broke the cumulative $3 million mark in funds raised. Since its inception, the event has raised over $3.2 million. 3 From The President by Marilyn Lenth IHBA President Summer is coming to a close, spring calves are being weaned and harvest is underway, marking an end to each of those crops for the year. At the same time, fall calves are hitting the ground and the autumn air is crisp, beginning a new season. A new season is also starting for our Iowa Hereford Breeders Association. Four years ago, I was privileged to have been elected to our board of directors, and I m very honored to now have the opportunity to serve as your president for the coming year. It continues to be an exciting time within our organization and in the promotion of the Hereford breed in general. During the past few years as your IHBA board, we have continued some longstanding traditions, updated some events with new techniques and approaches and have implemented some new and creative promotional programs. Our core purposes as an organization and board are stated in our bylaws: the primary purpose of the association shall be the promotion of the industry of raising registered Hereford cattle (horned and polled) within the state of Iowa; the carrying on of work and educational campaigns for the purposes of betterment of Hereford cattle and markets for the same; to create a unity of action among breeders of such cattle I m a firm believer that keys to a successful organization include strong communications and teamwork. We have a dedicated board representing you, but it also takes other willing committee members and volunteers to cover our many initiatives and fill out the team. As we work to keep moving forward, considering changes in processes and new events, it s important to have healthy discussion representing all members viewpoints. Your opinions matter, and your ideas and suggestions are always welcomed it s YOUR association. Candid discussions with differing opinions are expected, but at the end of the day, decisions will be made. At times we may agree, at other times we may have to agree to disagree and respect the opinion of the majority. In the end, we re one organization and it s important to stay unified in our end goals of promoting our industry. My door, phone and inbox are always open, and I encourage you to share your comments, suggestions, ideas and concerns with me or any member of our board of directors. We re all part of the same team all working towards a common goal of promoting our breed. I m excited about the coming year and what we can accomplish together. Happy Harvest Season and stay safe! Nominations Needed The IHBA board is seeking nominations for two prestigious awards: Hall of Fame honors people who have made a significant contribution to the Hereford breed (both horned & polled) in the State of Iowa. Presented at the Iowa Beef Expo banquet. Friend of the IHBA recognizes people, organizations, businesses or others who help promote our product. Presented at the Iowa State Fair. To nominate someone for either award, contact any IHBA board member. Cliff and Jan Tappa of Tappa s Steak House in Davenport are congratulated by IHBA President Bill Goehring after receiving the first Friends of Iowa Hereford Breeders Award at the Iowa State Fair. They serve only Certified Hereford Beef in their restaurant.

7 Scholarships Awarded Obituary Allen Johnson, 79, of Iowa Falls died July 23. A former National Guardsman and devoted grain farmer for 57 years, he was proud to have his two sons join him in the farming operation and to help his grandson get started in farming. He loved helping the grandkids on any project on the farm and following all their school activities. Lindsay Black of Chariton was named the 2017 winner of the Buell and Helen Jackson Memorial Award, given yearly by the Jackson family. Currently the Iowa Hereford Queen and vice president of the Iowa Junior Hereford Association, Lindsay also received the Richard F. Harms Memorial Scholarship of $100. She survives, along with sons Lynn and Kevin of Double J Herefords, four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Gammon Barn Museum Welcomes Many Visitors The Gammon Barn Museum, which chronicles the history of the birth of the Polled Hereford breed, saw lots of foot traffic during the State Fair. It remains, however, as one of the undiscovered treasures on the grounds, with many people s reaction being, I didn t know this was here. Special thanks to Ray Dittmer for overseeing the barn and its staffing and for maintaining the exhibits. Thanks also to these volunteers who served as hosts during the fair: Craig & Denise Amos Ron Beaver Willy Black Jon Espenscheid Bob & Twila Godbersen Diane Honecker Steve Landt Jerry Lynch Randy Offenburger Mark & Bonnie Ohrt John Pitt Rande Seuferer Mike & Becky Simpson Nathan Stickley Novaks are IBBC Winners The first Marvin and Manetta Ohrt Memorial Scholarship was presented by the Ohrt family to Lindsay Black (second from left). 8 Scenes from the 2017 Iowa Hereford Tour in Southwest Iowa Photos provided by Cheryl Beaver and Cindy Schlapia Approximately 45 people attended this year s Iowa Hereford tour on Sunday, Aug. 27. Purebred herds represented were Ron Beaver Herefords, Clarinda; Graham Polled Herefords, Benton; Novak Farms, Diagonal; and Hereford HQ, Diagonal. The group also visited the 450-cow commercial herd of Brent Wasteney near Shannon City, which uses Hereford bulls. The day concluded with a Certified Hereford Beef dinner and the IHBA s annual meeting at Roadhouse Bar & Grill in Arispe. Ron, Cheryl and Laura Beaver, along with Tyler and Sarah DeBour, had cattle on display by RBH 755T Upgrade 1513, CT Tankmaster 50W and R Vision The performance-based cow herd includes several Dams of Distinction. Trent Johnston (left) and host Jeremy Novak (right) manned the grill for the Ringgold County Cattlemen, who provided burgers and chips at lunch time. The scenic pastures at Hereford HQ, owned by Daniel and Jentry Graham, provided a backdrop for attendees to visit and talk cattle. At Novak Farms, guests not only got to view cattle from Graham Polled Herefords but they were challenged to judge a pen of bulls as well as suggest names for 2017-born calves. The Hereford influence was prominent in the Wasteney herd, as evidenced by this group of baldie calves, both black and red, in one of the lots. Hall of Famer Dick Graham held court from the cab of his pickup truck, from which he visited with many longtime cattle friends. GET WELL SOON! Rande Seuferer is in rehab following a car accident in which he sustained several broken bones. Send cards to him at th Ave., Milo, IA 50166
9 meet your directors New IHBA President Marilyn Lenth of Postville has been on the board since September 2013 and has previously served as secretary and vice president. She has filled many other roles while on the board, including being administrator of the organization s website and compiling listings and catalogs for the association s Hereford-influenced female sale and the spring bull sale. The Lenth Hereford was founded in 1967 by Iowa Hereford Hall of Famers Elden and Bea Lenth, her husband Doug s parents. What started as a group of Hereford females purchased in the 1960s from South Dakota is now a highly respected herd that numbers 110 registered Hereford cows (75 spring and 35 fall calvers). The Lenths currently sell approximately bulls and females annually through private treaty sales. Marilyn married into the operation when she and Doug wed in She was raised on a beef farm and her father and grandfather raised and showed Herefords and other breeds in the 1940s. After 35 years in the corporate/business world, Marilyn quit those jobs three years ago to focus on running the farm and cattle operation with Doug. They are partners in all aspects, with Doug focusing on crops, equipment and feeding while Marilyn s emphasis is on cattle, breeding and marketing. Marilyn raised four sons Shawn, Wes, Matt and Chris Larson. Shawn is the father of a 3-year-old daughter, Aleyah; Chris and his wife Lexi are expecting their first child in March. Marilyn was a 4-H leader for five years and a Boy Scout leader for 15 years. She is active in the Winneshiek County Cattleman s Association and serves on the Clayton County Conservation Board. Anthony Monroe of Truro is beginning his first year as vice president of the IHBA after serving as treasurer for the past three years. He has also been chairman of the association s Governor s Charity Steer Show entry for the last two years and previously organized the IHBA s embryo and semen auction during the Beef Expo, which also revived the annual Expo banquet. His BAJA Cattle operation began in 1997 when his mother and stepfather (Brenda and Al Robison) met. Al and his brother raised Hereford cattle, so Anthony and his brother Jared began showing Hereford steers before buying heifers to start their own herd. (Side note: BAJA Cattle is an acronym of their first names Brenda, Al, Jared and Anthony.) The current herd includes 15 cows and they also implant embryos. A territory manager for Merck Animal Health, Anthony points out that their operation includes the entire family his wife, Katie; sons Wyatt, almost 4, and Mason, 2; his parents, Al and Brenda Robison; and Katie s parents, Dennis and Roxanne Beeler.
