4 AHA Annual Meeting & American Royal Report by Dave Wiese (received too late for the November issue) The heifer show was solid with good depth in all the classes. Bull show was smaller and went fast. Iowa cattle did well to support the state. Good crowd was watching the show. The AHA meeting was all business: The breeders want and demand the breed and association to move on with great success. CHB is a concern and now and next year, results need to improve and show to keep the program running. In breed information: We are now in third place for number of cattle registered. The Hereford World had good returns last year and of course the junior division is very strong. Voting: Ernst not only knowledge of the meat industry, he is a people s person. Harrell runs a good ship, talks about bull demand and trade. He is a leader in an all-natural, pasture to rail beef co-op. Hoffman talks about the importance of a bull market. Without a bull market, the breed cannot survive. ATTENTION: JUNIORS Keep Your Show Shirt! To save families the expense of buying new show shirts every year, the IJHA board of directors and advisors plan on you wearing the same shirts at the 2007 show that you wore at the show in Eldora. Shirts will be available for new exhibitors (or those who have outgrown their current shirt) at the 2007 state show. Interested in Co-Op Advertising? For the past several years, the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association has sponsored a series of co-op ads during bull-buying season, with members being offered the opportunity to place herd contact information in boxes at the bottom of the association ad. Approximate cost per herd will be $100-$150. Depending upon the number of participants, this should provide for five to seven insertions. If you are interested in participating, contact Becky Simpson at ; becksimp@aol.com. Congratulations to...jerry and Kara (Hickman) Sparks of Panora on the birth of their first child, a daughter named Brianna Marian May, on Nov. 18. Grandparents are Ken and Kris Hickman of Greenfield. Duane Ohnemus of Ohnemus Farms, Inc., of Milo, who was recently elected to the Iowa Cattlemen s Association board of directors. He represents District 14, which includes Warren, Polk, Marion, Jasper and Poweshiek Counties. 8 Iowa Bull Tops Denver s Largest Breed Show! The Hereford breed showcased the largest breed show at the 2007 National Western Stock Show (NWSS) in Denver. There were more than 630 Herefords competing at the 101 st NWSS, including 485 entries on the hill in the open and junior shows and seven loads and 29 pens in the yards. Wiese & Sons, Manning, continued to do well in the yards, exhibiting a first place pen of junior bull calves and standing second with a pen of yearlings. In the junior show, Luke Schroder of Creston placed second with his polled spring heifer calf. Mallory Espenscheid also exhibited in the junior show. An assistant to the Iowa County engineer, Charley purchased his first heifer in 1966 at the Siehl dispersion in Grinnell. His current herd, which numbers 18 horned and polled cows, was established in 1997 when he purchased heifers from Double J Herefords, County Line Cattle Farms and Ohrts and bulls from Koziks and Ohrts. Charley served as a medic in the U.S. Army Reserves and received a good conduct medal. In high school he was president of the Marengo FFA. He attended Area 10 Community College, where he was on student council; Hawkeye Institute of Technology and took continuing education classes at Iowa State University in civil engineering. Charley holds various certifications with the Iowa Department of Transportation. He belongs to Farm Bureau and is a former union steward with Teamsters 238. Charley and his wife Kandy are parents of two daughters. Sara Foley, 24, is a dental hygienist in Iowa City, while Kara Johnson, 21, is a universal banker in West Des Moines. In Sympathy The IHBA extends condolences to Nancy Maurer and her family upon the death of Nancy s sister on January 20. Hereford-Influence Calf Sale Is Well-Received by Ron Beaver & Mike Simpson Fifteen consignors from Iowa and Missouri sold 250 head of feeder calves (2/3 steers and 1/3 heifers) at the 7 th annual Hereford Influence Feeder Calf Sale at the Anita Livestock Auction on Saturday, Jan. 20. There were several repeat consignors whose calves quickly received active bidding. Several repeat buyers were present, including local farmer-feeders and one high-volume buyer of both steers and heifers from Kansas. Another buyer came from South Dakota. Many good heifers were in demand for use as replacement females. Calves were straight Hereford and crosses and there was no significant difference in prices between them. Clearly, buyers wanted Hereford-influence calves. Quality ran deep in the sale offering and one farmer-feeder from Carroll remarked that he had never seen Hereford calves sell at such good prices. Weights of the offering were variable and it seemed lighter steers were the strongest category in demand. Following is an unofficial representation of sale prices, as kept by Mike Simpson: Weight Avg. Range Heifers 400 s $104 cwt. $97-$111 cwt. lower 500 s $94 $91-$104 upper 500 s $101 $100-$103 lower 600 s $97 $92-$101 Steers 400 s $115 $108-$120 lower 500 s $114 $101-$117 upper 500 s $100 $92-$107 lower 600 s $91 $89-$104 upper 600 s $86 $85-$88 lower 700 s $92 $90-$95
