1 August 2010 Newsletter Biddle Claims 2 Titles at JNHE Grand Champion AI Bull (Class Winner & Division Champion) Double K Marley DK75 by THR TRM Thor 7088 Reserve Grand Champion AI Heifer (2 nd in class to Grand Champion) Double K Lucky Lady DK74 by NS Lakes Kilo 002 Success breeds success! Karly Biddle of Walcott has been exhibiting at the Junior National Hereford Expo since she was a little girl and one of the perks of that participation is eligibility for the National Junior Hereford Association s Junior A.I. program, under which juniors can receive free semen and certificates for top AI sires from across the country. At the Junior National Hereford Expo each year there is a category for bulls and heifers who are conceived from this program. The Biddles have taken advantage of the program for a number of years and at the 2010 JNHE in Indianapolis, Karly claimed the grand champion AI bull and reserve grand champion AI heifer trophies.

Directory In Planning Stages The bi-annual IHBA membership directory is scheduled for distribution during the 2011 Iowa Beef Expo in February. More information will be provided in the next newsletter, but to help make it successful, here s what you can do now: 1) Start shooting! We are always on the lookout for good-quality color photos for the cover. If you have a good vertical shot, send it to Becky Simpson, th St., Redfield, IA ; or (jpeg format) to becksimp@aol.com. Now would also be a good time to get pictures for your herd s ad. 2) Start planning your advertising. Deadline for all copy and memberships ($50 for 2011 dues) will be Nov. 1. (Members paying 2011 dues by Nov. 1 will receive a free listing.)
3 Junior National Hereford Expo Indianapolis, IN July 4-10, ,161 entries 650 exhibitors 40 states Twenty Iowa exhibitors and their families spent a busy week in Indianapolis, showing cattle, participating in contests and making new friends. Although they failed to three-peat with the Golden Pitchfork, they had a memorable and satisfying time just the same. Advisors Tena & Dennis Biddle recap the event below: Iowa Juniors Race to Indy by Tena & Dennis Biddle, IJHA advisors Our week in Indy started off with pretty much everyone arriving on Saturday. We set up stalls and got things in the barn ready for the cattle to come in on Sunday. A huge thank you to everyone for volunteering and helping whenever asked to. It really helps make the advisors job a lot easier. We really had great state participation this year in almost all the contests. We started off on Monday with the 3-on-3 basketball tournament. We had three teams. First were the Cow Crushers, our peewee team of Evan Espenscheid, Logan Schmitt and Madison Katzenberger from Wisconsin. Then it was on to our senior team, which was the Deppe boys, who had quite an interesting game with Illinois. Let s just say, nobody came out a winner in this match. Then our adults, the Cow Slingers consisting of Jon Espenscheid, Darlene Koster and Doug Washburn, played a really good game but unfortunately Wisconsin came out the winner. Monday afternoon was also the speech contest. Evan Espenscheid and Nick Deppe each gave a speech and both did a great job. The poster contest supplied Iowa with a winner in Ethan Espenscheid, who received second place in the peewee division. The photo contest also sent another award to Iowa with Peyton Schmitt receiving a second for her photo of around the farm. Congrats to both of you! Tuesday was another busy day with the golf outing taking place. WeBCows sponsored a hole on the course and got to keep the commemorative flag from the pin. The Deppe boys also had a foursome in the tournament. Chance Deppe had the longest putt and got a prize for that. The judging contest also took place on Tuesday. The participation was outstanding in this contest: Logan Schmitt, peewee; Peyton Schmitt, junior; Ella Meyer, Colton Black, Max Cherry, Sage Washburn and Colby Goehring, intermediates; Colton Smith, senior; and Doug Washburn, Willie Black and Lonnie Cherry, adults. Tuesday was also team marketing and for the first time in quite a few years, Iowa had a team in this competition. Team members were Colton Smith, Sage Washburn and Colby Goehring. They did a good job and all say that next year will be better. The afternoon finished with the team fitting contest. Our team was Montana Deppe, Karly Biddle and Nick Deppe. We felt they did a good job but did not make the top five.
4 Wednesday was the steer show and we had three steers from Iowa. (Note: Complete placings for Iowa exhibitors follow this article.) Thursday was the bred and owned heifer and bull shows and the A.I. shows. We enjoyed a pizza lunch as a state. Friday was another busy day as the owned heifer shows got underway. Friday night was the banquet and Colton Black was voted our outstanding Iowa junior for this year. Congrats to Colton! He and Max Cherry were also our voting delegate to all the meetings for the new national directors. Thank you to both of them for doing this. Saturday was our final day in Indy and the owned heifer show was back underway. As the show was winding down, so were many of our friendships that we made during this week. It you have never been to a Junior National, I invite you to come along next year. We look forward to seeing everyone Kickin It in Kansas next year, July 9-16 in Kansas City.
