1 August 2017 Newsletter Encore for Vogel at Junior National! Two of the most prestigious achievements at the Junior National Hereford Expo are the premier exhibitor and premier junior breeder designations. For the second straight year, both those banners went to Iowa exhibitor Payton Vogel of Hartley. In addition to the seven head he bred and exhibited himself (all but one of which stood third or higher), he also bred several other high-placing heifers in the owned show that contributed to his breeder points total. Iowans participated in numerous events during the weeklong event, held July in Louisville, Ky. They served up Iowa sweet corn to attendees during the Sunday evening Derby Tailgate Party and also had entries in a number of contests throughout the week. Austin Deppe, Maquoketa, was one of the finalists for Herdsman of the Year. Junior National coverage continues on pages 4 and 6. Complete results will be published in the September issue of Hereford World.
2 From the President by Bill Goehring IHBA President The summer has gone by pretty fast again this year. Dry weather here in the southeast part of the state has forced producers to begin feeding cows as early as mid- June. The grass really did not get a good start this spring and no rain in June and July has pastures gone. Anyone that has hay to sell should call me the market is $50-$60 for round bales and moving up each week. The new and exciting Hereford futurity steer show is going to take place in conjunction with the 4-H steer show at the Iowa State Fair. This is a neat incentive program for producers and exhibitors both and we certainly expect this program to grow over the coming years. Support Still Needed For Governor s Steer Show The State Fair open class Hereford show has been split back to a horned and a polled division for heifers. At the request of exhibitors, the IHBA board of directors sent a proposal to the Iowa State Fair and it was approved. If you are able to attend this year, let a board member know what your thoughts are about how you like this year s shows. We need folks to let us know so we can plan for next year s show. This year s Iowa Hereford Tour and annual meeting is heading to southwest Iowa on Aug. 27. I encourage everyone to attend and be a part of electing new directors at this year s meeting. It will be a fun and educational day for those that make time to attend. The cattle market is trending slightly lower on the fats, but cash feeders are showing a lot of strength, 800-lb. steers are bringing $150-$155. When you look at December and January, live cattle contracts are only trading at $115-$117. Breeding cattle values have sure moved lower across our trade area as folks scramble for feed. Fall-calving cows are selling $1,350-$1,500 for the better end and older short-term cows are just above pound price. It looks like we should have a stronger feeder cattle market going into this fall than we were a year ago, at least $150 per head more value. Let s hope that holds. Have a safe and wonderful fall and hope to see you at the fair or the tour. El Macho, raised by Jacob and Jenna Smith, will be the Hereford entry in this year s Governor s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. Our celebrity showperson will again be U.S. Senator Joni Ernst. You can support this effort in several ways: Donate to help purchase the steer at auction. All donations are tax-deductible. Make checks payable to Ronald McDonald House and send to Anthony Monroe, 985 Hwy. 14, Knoxville, IA 50138; or Jacob Smith, 7515 N. 19 th Ave. W, Newton, IA Purchase a T-shirt promoting the steer. Cost is $10 and shirts can be picked up from the Smith family at the fair. Come out at 4 p.m. in Pioneer Pavilion to cheer on Sen. Ernst & El Macho. Welcome, New Members! 3 Inaugural Steer Futurity Draws 10 Nominations HELP WANTED The first IHBA-sponsored Hereford steer futurity, to be held during the 4-H show at the Iowa State Fair, drew 10 nominations from seven breeders. Aimed at promoting purebred Hereford steers bred in Iowa, the event will award $1,000 to the champion futurity steer, $500 to the reserve and $250 to the third high overall. Breeders who nominated steers are Amos Hereford Farm, Indianola; Max Cherry, Winthrop; Deppe Brothers Cattle Co., Maquoketa; Maas Show Cattle, Williamsburg; Springdale Polled Hereford Ranch, Decorah; Addison Wall, Pleasantville; and Coryn Wilson, Donahue. The champion prize is sponsored by Weeping Fox Ranch, Signature Signs and Classy Fox Boutique; reserve by Lowderman Auction Options and Deppe Brothers Cattle Co.; and third overall by Mike Sorenson Family and PAW Livestock. In a separate program, the IHBA will continue to award $20 to each 4-H Hereford steer exhibitor, with the champion and reserve 4-H steers (whether in the futurity or not) splitting the remainder of a $750 jackpot if their animals are Iowa bred. FREE ICE CREAM SOCIAL Wednesday, Aug p.m. Hereford Booth, Stalling Barn Iowa State Fairgrounds All Hereford Enthusiasts Welcome! Tappas to be Honored As Friends of IHBA Cliff and Jan Tappa, owners of Tappa s Steak House in Davenport, have been chosen by the IHBA board as recipients of the association s first Friend of the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association award, aimed at recognizing people, businesses, organizations or others who help promote our product. The Tappas plan to attend the ice cream social and will greet people in the barn on Wednesday of the State Fair. The award will be presented during the show on Thursday.
