1 August 2013 Newsletter Vogel, Deppes Triumph at JNHE The theme was Show Me the Herefords and Iowa juniors did just that July at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City, bringing home lots of hardware from both the show ring and the various contests held during the week. Friday, July 19, was an especially good day for the 29 Iowans and their families, as Payton Vogel of Hartley topped the 255-head bred-and- show; the Deppe brothers (Chance, Austin and Nick) of Maquoketa earned both reserve champion steer and champion carcass steer honors on the same calf; and Evan Espenscheid, Marshalltown, showed the reserve champion junior A.I. heifer. New Royalty Crowned for three days, leading in the various classes. She sends the following update: JNHE in Kansas City was great! I attended the Queens Tea where I met many of the other state queens. We enjoyed making little girls from all over the country feel like princesses by helping them decorate their own crowns and sashes. The Iowa juniors had a very successful week in the show ring as well as in the fitting contest and quiz bowl. I was happy to represent Iowa in the show ring and am excited for the Iowa State Fair! Thank You very much for your support at this year s JNHE. Your contribution is greatly appreciated and we are very grateful. It is people like you who keep the breed great and keep our junior association thriving. Thank you. Keysto Stotz National Junior Hereford Association for the nice gifts at the Iowa Beef Expo. They will come in handy. It was surprising and exciting for me to win reserve champion Hereford steer. It was my second year; I will definitely come again next year. Thank you. Josie Oldenburger, Parkersburg There s Still Time! Outgoing Iowa Hereford Queen Karly Biddle (right) crowned her successor and the royal court prior to the preview show on June 30. From left are Junior Princess Kaitlyn Mohwinkle, Aplington; Princess Abby Anderlik, Dayton: and Queen Ella Meyer, Keswick. Ella is the daughter of Kevin and Martha Meyer and was the Iowa Hereford Princess. Abby is the daughter of Tim and Melinda Anderlik; Kaitlyn s parents are Jeff and Kerri Mohwinkle. Ella has had a busy few weeks since her coronation. She not only exhibited at the Junior National Hereford Expo in Kansas City, but she also participated in various activities with other state queens and worked the ring If you know of someone who would make a good IHBA director, or if you would like to run for the board yourself, there is still time to make a suggestion to the nominating committee: John Hardy, , jjmhardy@gmail.com; or Anthony Monroe, , amonroe81@gmail.com. Fall Co-Op Advertising Underway Eleven breeders signed on to participate in the IHBA s fall advertising campaign, aimed at promoting calves as well as breeding stock during the club calf-buying season. The first 4-color ad appears in the August issue of Livestock Plus with another due in September. Proposed wording: The number of directors of the association shall be twelve (12). The active membership of the association shall elect the directors at the annual meeting of the membership. Such directors shall be elected for a term of three (3) years on an alternating basis as determined by the board of directors. Vacancies on the board of directors may be filled by the board of directors for the unexpired term applicable. A director may not serve more than two consecutive terms. Gammon Site Gets a Facelift New permanent fencing was installed in July to enclose and preserve the historical marker at the original site of the Gammon Barn, located at th Ave., New Virginia. For complete directions (including GPS coordinates) to the birthplace of Polled Herefords, see page 49 of the current IHBA directory. Watch for pictures of the project in an upcoming newsletter. AHA Director Report by David Trowbridge Hello from your AHA board. I thought I would touch on a few things that are happening at the association: First, I was thrilled to hear that Trey Befort accepted the CHB supply chain manager position. He will start Aug. 12 with responsibility for packer and feedlot relations, commercial cattlemen relations and coordination supply chain opportunities to fill the growing CHB demand. This has been a major objective of mine and the board. This position will bring your commercial producers together with feeders to place whiteface cattle in the market area of our present CHB licensed packers and grow our relationship in other market regions. We will need to identify your producers, numbers available, marketing intentions and get them in contact with feeders. We will need your help by transferring all your bulls to your commercial producers. What a great opportunity to help your customers market their product, increase supply of CHB product and INCREASE YOUR HEREFORD BULL SALES! Look for much more information from the association soon. The AHA online system development test committee is making great progress in the beta testing of the new system. This will be an exciting new way to do your business with the AHA in real time, allowing a faster and more efficient method of doing most of your transactions with the AHA. Last week the Hereford Research Foundation had their annual fundraiser auction on BuyHereford.com and raised over $40,000 for your association to continue the impressive work they have done to prove the value of Herefords in the market place. Thanks to all of you that participated in this very necessary event. Also, the Junior National in Kansas City was a huge success. Congratulations to all of our Iowa juniors! Mary and I are headed to New Mexico this week to the summer board meeting at the home of your board president, Cliff Copeland. We have a lot to discuss and I will get another update in the next newsletter. Please keep up your great work.
10 Expo Sale Managers Resign After six years of managing the Iowa Select Hereford Sale at the Iowa Beef Expo, Mike and Becky Simpson have resigned that position. For information on nominating and consigning cattle to the 2014 sale, contact the sale committee: Steve Landt, , Nathan Stickley, , Jon Blin, , Obituaries Hall of Fame breeder Marlowe Seitsinger of Kalona, formerly of Kinross, Wellman and Williamsburg, died May 6 at the age of 103. He is survived by three daughters, one son, 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two great-greatgrandchildren; and two sisters. Kendall Johnson, 53, of Rhodes, formerly of DeWitt, died June 11 in a car accident. Survivors include his wife, Rachael; sons Ryan and Alan, who have been active in the IJHA; his father, Richard; and three sisters. Maynard Hebl of Iowa City passed away on June 23 near his home in a farm accident. He was 78. Maynard spent his entire adult life farming the family farm just west of Iowa City and loved tending to his Hereford cattle. He was active in a number of organizations. He is survived by two daughters, four sons; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; six brothers and three sisters. Frances Jones, 93, of Sigourney, died June 27. She and her late husband, Harold, farmed in the Hayesville area and bred Polled Herefords for several years. They also were long-time managers of the Southeast Iowa Polled Hereford Association sale. Survivors include a son, three daughters, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren. Welcome, New Members! Davis Herefords Tom, Janice, Gunnar, Graham, Eleigh & Emilyn Davis, Monroe, IA Hickory Grove Farms Phillip, Michael, Melissa & Edward Dahnert, Juneau, WI What s In a Name? Like most new parents, purebred cattle producers put a lot of thought into naming their babies. Often, they go with a family name in an effort to demonstrate the genetics behind the animal. Other times, they go for the creative, choosing monikers that describe the calf s markings or personality, play on words or current trends or are just plain fun. One needs look no further than the newly crowned grand champion horned heifer at the JNHE to see these naming trends in action she s Kool Aid Points. Ignoring the necessary prefixes and numbers, a perusal of this year s JNHE catalog provides some other interesting (and real!) heifer names: Show heifers get a lot of attention, so Awe She Is In Show Biz, Show Diva and Belle of the Barn seem appropriate. Any showmanship judge will tell you that Shez on Time is a good rule to follow, especially when you have just a Minute to Win It. Just imagine the kind of girls night out you would have if you got Alexis Texas, Big Booty Judy, Tricked Out Trixy, Shameless Sylvia, Busy Betsy and Angel Eyes together it would probably be A Little Risque. Decked out in their Ruby Slippers, they would no doubt Raise Your Glass, full of Fine Wine or Peenya Kowlada while the band was Hit N a Lick and some guy promised they would Always Be My Baby. Finally, Julie Had Enuff and after giving the others the Evil Eye she left with Honey Boo Boo. We can only hope they all lived Happy Everafter. Congratulations!! To Chrissy Dittmer of Lacona, daughter of Ray & Jan, for being crowned Warren County Fair Queen To MacKenzie Trowbridge, Tabor, whose Hereford heifer was grand champion breeding beef at the Mills County Fair To Kaitlyn Mohwinkle, Aplington, who showed the champion Hereford breeding heifer and supreme champion female at the Butler County Fair Free Ice Cream Social, Aug p.m. Hereford the State Fair
