Johnson bought some registered Hereford cows near Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and walked them to the farm in Milford, Iowa. The herd he established is still going strong 100 years later, operated by E.O. s grandson, IHBA Hall of Famer Jack Johnson and his wife, Lynne. To mark the event, they are planning a celebration at the farm on Saturday, Sept. 29, and invite all their Hereford friends to join them. The IHBA presents a specially designed award to all youth who exhibited a champion Hereford (horned or polled) heifer or steer at their county fair. In most cases, these will be given at the county s awards day. In order to receive this award, the official County Champion Hereford Report Form must be completed by county Extension personnel and submitted by Oct. 1. To date, forms have been received from the following counties: Buchanan, Butler, Davis, Fayette, Howard, Iowa, Jefferson, Jones, Louisa, Marion, Ringgold and Tama. If your county is not listed and you exhibited a champion Hereford, know who did or sold a calf that was champion at a county that is not listed, please contact the Extension office and ask them to submit the form ASAP. You may also request a form from the IHBA administrative secretary or download it from the IHBA website ( click on the forms tab) to take to your Extension office for their signature. Reserve Your Spot in the New Directory The Iowa Hereford Directory will be published in January and approximately 6,300 of the 7,500 copies will be direct-mailed to Iowa cow-calf producers, IHBA and IJHA members, county Extension offices and Iowa sale barns. Deadline for participation is November 15. All members who pay 2019 IHBA dues ($50) to the administrative secretary by that date will receive a FREE basic listing in the book; an expanded listing with more herd information is available for an additional $50. A listing form is inserted into this newsletter. The entire directory will be printed in 4-color. Ad rates are $400 for a full page and $250 for a half page. As an added bonus, all full page ads will receive one free annual Facebook feature during 2019 and Ads do not have to be camera-ready. You can submit photos, copy and sketch of the layout and Creative Services will create the ad for you at no charge if the information is submitted through the IHBA. You will receive a proof from IHBA to approve prior to printing. AHA Delegates Announced Iowa breeders elected Marilyn Lenth, Postville; Charls Rife, Columbus Junction; Mike Simpson, Redfield; and Chance Wiese, Manning, as the state s voting delegates at the American Hereford Association s annual meeting, to be held Oct. 27 in Kansas City. Prime pages will be sold by claim process. For more information and minimum bid prices, contact Mike Simpson at simpmj@aol.com; , by October 15. This 2-year publication provides a lot of bang for your buck, considering its wide distribution and low ad rates. Cost of a full-age ad works out to only pennies per day. Please consider being part of the directory to promote Herefords in Iowa. Information for listings and ads and all payments are due Nov. 15.

6 Famous Amos & Kennedy Rife Raise $11,500 for Ronald McDonald Houses Kennedy Rife (right) accompanies her steer, Famous Amos and celebrity showperson Kaylee Tremel, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa, into the ring in Pioneer Pavilion for the 36 th annual Governor s Charity Steer Show. On Saturday, Aug. 11, Kennedy Rife, 10-year-old daughter of Charly and Stephani Rife, exhibited her home-raised steer, Famous Amos at the Governor s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. She was accompanied by her celebrity showperson, Kayleee Tremel, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa. Kennedy, along with the sponsoring Iowa Hereford Breeders Association, was able to raise $11,500 for the sale of her steer. More than 100 donors contributed to the cause, due in large part to the Rife family s tireless fundraising efforts. All proceeds from the sale go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa, located in Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City. The 2018 event was a record-breaker, raising over $294,000. Kennedy says: My family and I would like to thank you for supporting me and my project, Famous Amos,. On this journey, I was able to meet some awesome people, including my celebrity, Miss Teen Rodeo Iowa, Kaylee Tremel. I was also able to meet Governor Kim Reynolds and volunteer my time at the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House. I made many friends with other exhibitors in the GCSS and made memories to last a lifetime. Again, to all of you who graciously donated, attended the event at the Iowa State Fair, helped me fit Famous Amos for the big show or provided support on the sidelines, I cannot thank you enough. Gregory Feedlots Named 2018 Friend of IHBA This year s recipient of the Friend of the Iowa Hereford Breeders Association award is Gregory Feedlots, Inc., of Tabor. They were selected for making an impact on the Hereford breed by bringing more recognition to the Certified Hereford Beef Program and the National Junior Hereford Association s Fed Steer Shootout. Manager David Trowbridge (pictured at left receiving the award from IHBA President Marilyn Lenth) was instrumental in starting the Fed Steer Shootout in To date, more than 100 Hereford or Hereford-influence steers have enetered the program, which allows NJHA members to consign steers, follow them through the feeding and harvest process and learn more about the beef industry. The program has generated new opportunities for Hereford juniors and directed more cattle into Certified Hereford Beef.

9 Scenes from the 2018 Iowa Hereford Tour in Northeast Iowa After spending last year in southwest Iowa, the 2018 Iowa Hereford Tour visited the opposite corner of the state on Sunday, Aug. 26. More than 400 cattle representing six herds were on display and a delicious beef lunch was enjoyed at noon at Johnson s Supper Club in Elkader. Thanks to all the tour hosts for their hospitality and to Marilyn Lenth for organizing the event. Numerous pens of fall- and spring-calving cows, as well as bred and open heifers and yearling and 2-year-old bulls were available for viewing at Lenth Herefords, Postville. The Turkey River valley provided a scenic backdrop at Riverview Herefords near Elkader. Junior members Trinity (left) and Tory (right) Brincks of Fredericksburg show part of their family s herd that was on display at Lenths. Guests enjoyed homemade peach cobbler while viewing this set of embryo calves at Cherry Farms at Winthrop. Also featured at the Lenth stop was a sample of the herd being built by junior members Alissa and Tanner Rose of St. Olaf. Both the cattle and the grounds were well-groomed at the final stop of the day, Jon and Crystal Blin s JJB Cattle Company in Independence. Former and future show animals were represented in the individual pens and bloodlines.

11 Is Retained Ownership for You? Retaining ownership of your calves through the feeding period can help you capture the value of the quality genetics you work so hard to produce. Clay County Fair Spencer, Iowa Sept head Judge: Carter Ward, Plattsburg, MO Tri County Steer Carcass Futurity (TCSCF) works with cattle producers who want to retain ownership of their calves in the feedlot. Producers can consign a small representation of their herd or send their entire calf crop to be fed in one of TCSCF s six select southwest Iowa feedlots. Tri County will take in cattle any day of the year, but to give producers a target date, they offer delivery dates on the second Thursday in the months of October through January. Consignors will receive periodic gain reports and once the cattle have been marketed, full carcass data, cost data and calculated feed to gain data will be provided for producers to use in making future management decisions. Based on years of data, TCSCF has target end points and helps capture value by marketing on a grid and/or breed specific programs such as Certified Hereford Beef. To learn more about Tri County Steer Carcass Futurity please contact their office in Lewis, Iowa at or Matt Groves at mjgroves@iastate.edu. Siblings Brady (left) and Kiley (right) Allan of LeMars, IA, led out the grand and reserve grand champion females, respectively. IHBA Board Action The IHBA board of directors met Sept. 9 in Ames.
