WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN MEETING Nov 27 2 pm Natrona Room Ramkota Hotel & Conference Center - Casper Held in conjunction with the WSGA/WACD Natural Resource Rendezvous November Learn more at Contact President Kahla Mills at or kahla88@hotmail.com. Thank You C. Platte Valley Companies for sponsoring our Beef It Newsletter! Your support of Wyoming Agriculture is phenomenal. CONTACT US: A Message From Our President Hello Wyoming CattleWomen! I am proud to be serving as your state president. I would like to thank everyone who has helped and is helping me along the way. This is such a great organization and I love to be able to promote the beef industry right alongside all of you. I just wanted to update everyone on a few of the things that the CattleWomen did this year. I attended the Region V meeting in Gillette and we had a great turn out, as well as heard some great speakers. The Wyoming State Fair booth was very nicely put together and we had good traffic through it. Thank you Bobbi Geis Kahla Mills for putting the booth together and keeping it running! Our fall meeting in Casper had good attendance. We had updates from all of the committees. Along with fall comes the time for membership renewal and paying dues. Membership to American National CattleWomen can once again be sent to the state who will then forward it on to ANCW, making it a simple, one-payment option. Also on that note, WCW is signed up for the ANCW MOOVE Contest. The MOOVE Contest is based on current/renewed memberships, and the winning states will receive Powder River Panels, $500, and more! We need to add at least one new state member and one new national member, to our membership numbers from last year. We do have at least one new state member. I am asking everyone to please help us obtain our goal of being a winning state. I hope fall is treating everyone well, and I look forward to seeing all of you at our next meeting in Casper at the 2017 Wyoming Natural Resource Rendezvous. We will be meeting Nov. 27 at 2 pm in the Natrona Room at the Ramkota Hotel. - Kahla Mills, WCW President BEEF STRONG: Gwen Geis Set to Lead ANCW By Liz Lauck Wyoming will soon be proud to call the President of American National CattleWomen one of our own. So that means dues are now due! You can pay through your local group or send the dues to Jenny Conrad, 5648 Rd 27 Veteran, WY There is a form on the website to fill out that also lists a place to put in your county group. This is very helpful as we don t know the division lines for the different groups and want to give each group credit for their members. We are still working on guidelines for Grassroots funding projects, but remember to submit your plans and activities. We can t even begin to decide if we could fund a project until it is submitted! This is your Wyoming CattleWomen and you have a say in the funding. I do need to add that I have an Associate Membership refund check for Snowy Range CattleWomen, but I don t have an address to send it to. They have eight grandchildren and the two granddaughters are CattleWomen as well! Gwen became involved in her local Cow-Belles after high school. She is third generation President of the Campbell County CattleWomen, following in her grandmother s and mother s footsteps. She became involved with the Wyoming CattleWomen and volunteered with the Beef Gift Certificate promotion, eventually running the program. Gwen has filled several state offices, including President. She is passionate about promoting BEEF. I am fortune to have the time and the ability to share our agriculture stories with everyone from the mom at the meat counter, to the Congressman helping make laws, Gwen said. While serving WCW, Gwen started attending ANCW meetings and was quick to get more involved. She has served as Chair of the Board of Directors, Parliamentarian, and was later elected Vice President, putting her on the path to President. Becoming involved with ANCW has been a very eye-opening and rewarding experience, Gwen said. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and I ve grown as a leader, beef producer, and agriculture advocate. Gwen will move ANCW forward in the rebuilding process the organization has undertaken in recent years. She looks forward to the growth of the Collegiate Beef Advocacy program (formerly Beef Ambassadors). She is also excited about the potential of the Women s Leadership program that gives all levels of CattleWomen leadership and advocacy skills. Debbie Smith-Hill Account Specialist Vic Schuler Closing Specialist Martha Weischedel Customer Service Specialist NEWS I look forward to traveling this great country and seeing cattle operations in all different stages and demographics, Gwen said. Gwen challenges other CattleWomen to get involved at the state and national levels. Whether serving in leadership, or just attending meetings, Gwen promises all CattleWomen have something to gain from involvement. You will broaden your perspective about your livelihood, Gwen said. 4 PAGE 4 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN November 2017 Albany County CattleWomen Our Albany County CattleWomen have had another busy and productive year. Many thanks to all the ladies who care so much about our industry, our western way of life and each other! Our highlight of the year has been the monthly E-Newsletter that Toni Day and Nita Engen produce for us. Staying in touch allows for a higher level of commitment and accomplishment. Our Cow-Belles of the Month were Toni Day (January); Maia Anderson (February), Carol Price (March), Nell Kenehan (April), Betty Wortman (May), Mary Louise Wood (June), Dorothy Sigel (July), Dicksie May (August), Ranch Tour Committee (September), and Ruth Blake (October). In June we enjoyed Family Night with some fun games of bingo, thanks to our Moose Lodge hosts. We presented the scholarship recipients for the C.D. Atkinson Memorial Scholarship, the Margaret Page Memorial Scholarship and our two regular Cow-Belle scholarships. They are Jason Sturgeon, Shelby Ulrich, Amanda Christensen and Taylor Reynolds. We also honored the following distinguished members with lifetime memberships: Jeanne Alley, Sandra Eike, Julie Houchin, Dixie Mathisen, Gayle Miech, Jan Parker and Janet Talbott. We had three Ranch Cookouts this year. (1) The Nici Self Museum in Centennial hosted the first cookout and First Interstate Bank donated and smoked beef brisket. We were able to tour the museum and local musicians provided the entertainment. (2) Art, Dorothy, Matt & Gina Sigel hosted a cookout at their Hecht Creek Ranch in the Centennial Valley. Gourmet beef burgers from their own beef were the featured dinner item. (3) The final cookout was held at the Wyoming Territorial Prison. Along with a great steak dinner, guests were able to tour the Prison and enjoy live music. We also catered the Laramie Jubilee Days (LJD) Downtown BBQ, the Albany County Fair Beef Day Breakfast, the Friends of the Albany County Recreation Center s reception honoring Shirley Lilley for her many years of service as treasurer, the Miech Family Auction and we provided our famous Cow-Belle Beans and Frito Corn Salad for First Interstate Bank s Business After Hours reception. Our Junior Beef Ambassadors, Rylie Heggie and Emily Browning, did a tremendous job this year advocating for beef and helping our group with all kinds of tasks. Their coach, Tammy Heggie, scheduled them at the Ag Expo, all our cookouts, the ranch tour, and the LJD Downtown BBQ. They also represented us in the LJD Parade. Our Ranch Tour visited ranches in the upper Big Laramie Valley area, south of Woods Landing. It was a wonderful event again and even was awarded 1 st place in the Activities Award for 2017 by the Wyoming State Historical Society. The tour is free to the public COUNTY HAPPENINGS Converse County Cow-Belles new highway signs on Hwy 20 and I-25. thanks to our generous sponsors: Albany County Farm Bureau Federation, Albany County Historical Society, C&A Pet & Livestock Supply, First Interstate Bank, Premier Bone & Joint, Stonehouse Inc./ Earthwork Services and Women of the Moose. Committee members include: Sandra Eike & Terry Jones, co-chairs; Norma Day, Carolyn Durand, Elnora Frye, Cheryl Leach, Shirley Lilley, Dicksie May, Ali Scovil, Judy Thomas & Betty Wortman. Submitted by Sharleen Castle Converse County Cow-Belles Our Cow-Belles and families met for a summer outing in July at the Lester & Norma Grant s Ranch south of Glenrock. We toured their historic barn, then toured the historic barn at Rick Grant s Ranch. Both barns were magnificent examples of local history. After the tours we enjoyed a carry in dinner at the nearby dance hall. The new napkins have arrived and are available at several local businesses. We sponsored the Supreme Cow contest at our county fair. During State Fair we served the meal at the Young Producers dinner and had an entry in the State Fair Parade. Two new highway signs have been put up along Hwy 20 and I-25 on land donated by Bart & Susan Gray and Andy Gray. A big Thank You to them! We have donated brand napkins to the schools to be used on days that beef donated by local producers is served. We hear that some of our future Cow-Belle members are more than willing to explain the brands to other students! Our members have been sharing beef recipes on social media. Submitted by Cheryl Jacobson Fremont County CattleWomen Fremont County Cattlewomen hosted Dr. Angus McIntosh on September 10th. Dr. McIntosh is a range allotment advocate. He spoke at our fall meeting to present insight on how to deal with the ever growing government encroachment on grazing rights. We had a great turn out for our carry-in supper. There were CattleWomen, their families, state legislators, county commissioners and other community members who use Forest, BLM and other federal lands. We dispensed with county business since we had a speaker and will conduct business at our November 9th meeting. Lander Valley CattleWomen will host this meeting at Svilar s Supper Club in Hudson. Our County Fair Booth was successful again. We always enjoy having the photographs for the photo contest. Our winning categories were ag related, cows in the photo, and people s choice. Each

5 PAGE 5 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN November 2017 category winner was given a $25.00 gift card and a note thanking them for participating and that they would hopefully use the card to purchase beef. Here is wishing all of you a successful gather and good luck with the market. Submitted by Janet Givens Johnson County CattleWomen The Johnson County CattleWomen had a pretty quiet summer. We held our annual Ag Day in May and hosted all 3 rd grade students in Johnson County. The kids learned a number of fun things from how to tag and vaccinate to horseshoeing and beekeeping. Our bunch served them a hearty lunch and fun was had by all. We worked our Beef Stand during the beef show at our Johnson County Fair and Rodeo. We served nearly 300 hamburgers and sold a bunch of our swag as well. The ladies decided to sponsor the best beef photo in the photography section of open class fair entries too! Our winner was Lisa Killian of and we made sure she had the best t-shirt, scarf and cookbook the cattlewomen offer! We have our 2018 datebooks ready to sell and we also decided to have hats made to sell. We have sold out of the hats nearly as fast as we have ordered them! The ladies are now gearing up for our one fall bull sale and planning our 9 th annual Women s Ag Summit to be held January 20 th in. Please watch our website and Facebook page for more details on that! We hope you all have had a great summer and that fall is starting to slow down for you all! Submitted by Amanda Hulett Laramie County Cow-Belles The Laramie County Cowbelles provided lunch for The Ability Experience, formerly Push America in July. Pi Kappa Phi is a fraternity whose members go on cross-country rides to raise awareness for disabilities and to raise money. The Cowbelles also held their second annual Pie Social at the Laramie County Fair in August. It was a great success with over two hundred people served. The Laramie County Cowbelles hosted their annual Ag Expo September 19 and 20 with over th graders from Laramie County in attendance at the COUNTY HAPPENINGS Johnson County is selling 2018 datebooks and hats, which have been hot ticket items. Laramie Peak CattleWomen s Jan Hyche and Sydney Burek teach kids about BEEF at the 2017 Ag Expo. The Game & Fish booth at the Laramie County Cow-Belles Ag Expo. Archer Complex. With booths ranging from milking a cow to honey bees to learning to rope, the 4 th graders learned about a wide variety of different forms of agriculture. They also learned about electricity, stages of wheat from seed to flour, animal byproducts, and the amount of sugar in various foods, along with a John Deere equipment exhibit. There were also exhibits to educate about various plants that grow, and wildlife. Also included was an animal exhibit where the students learned about different farm animals such as pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and chickens. A highlight of the day was watching working cattle dogs herd steers into a trailer. - Submitted by Michelle Vercelli Laramie Peak CattleWomen Platte Co. has already given the Laramie Peak CattleWomen a taste of winter weather as we hustle to wrap up Fall ranch duties before the real thing hits us. In late June 41 young men representing The Ability Experience (formerly Push America) bicycled through as they traveled from coast to coast. As has been our practice for the last 13 years, we fed them a BEEF meal. This is a wonderful public relations opportunity exposing the next generation of urbanites to ranch life. The local fair is in the history books. For the first time since we offered a photo contest to the public, it was necessary to put it on hold, but we re looking into reinstating it next year. LPCW continues to actively support numerous fair events and 4-H. The membership headed south to Chugwater for our September meeting. Discussion centered around our involvement in the celebration of the Eclipse of 2017 which arced right over our county. Our intention was to sell thermo mugs featuring the LPCW logo and the word BEEF prominently displayed. The product was not what was represented when ordered so we refused delivery. So much for our get rich quick idea, but we didn t want to be associated with an inferior product. The FFA kids reworked our highway signs making them more stable to withstand our Wyoming winds. They were solidly in place along I-25 to welcome all the tourists passing

6 PAGE 6 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN November 2017 through to witness the eclipse. Liz Lauck again chaired the annual Ag Expo in early October. We re very fortunate that the FFA groups from Wheatland, Glendo and Chugwater have become very involved in presenting this event along with local merchants and various government agencies to the 3rd and 4th graders of School District #1. Requests are out for nominations for the 2017 Ranch Woman of the Year. The announcement of the successful candidate will be given at our annual year end banquet, which is rapidly approaching. So closes another year for the Laramie Peak Cattle- Women. - Submitted by Donita Graves Natrona County Cow-Belles We are proud to see so many BEEF signs up along the highways in Wyoming! We got our signs up last fall and we want to congratulate Converse County for their nice new signs. Also Laramie Peak for getting their signs back up. They do have strong winds to contend with. We are getting ready for our Ag Expo. We ve been cut from three days to two due to budget cuts in the schools. We hate to lose this contact with the children. Our Valentine s Gala will be in February and we have fun. Everyone enjoys delicious prime rib, auctions and dancing. Sue Wyatt passed away in June and we miss her. She was always willing to help with all our projects. She lived in town so kept our products at her home and she kept track of all of them. She chaired the scholarship committee and rarely missed a meeting. May Stewart, a Legacy member, passed away on Sept 29 th. She was a kind and gentle lady who ranched in the mountains and taught in country schools. We are in the beginning stages of planning a Legacy Park where the families of members can plant a tree or otherwise remember their loved one in the ranching community. Submitted by Marcia Campbell Niobrara County CattleWomen Niobrara County CattleWomen s September meeting/ membership drive to get dues collected. COUNTY HAPPENINGS Washakie County Cow-Belles 4th of July Float. Washakie County Cow-Belles The Washakie County Cowbelles gave two $500 scholarships- -one to Riley Erickson of Ten Sleep and one to Emiliano Vigil of Worland. The scholarships are awarded to those students who will be majoring in some area of agriculture. Twenty-five pounds of meat was donated to the Ten Sleep FFA banquet. One hundred dollars was donated to the Ten Sleep Youth Rodeo. Friends of the Library hosted a Women of the West and the Cowbelles donated napkins and placemats. For the Ten Sleep Fourth of July Parade, the Cowbelles decorated a float. It won $100 for People s Choice. The theme of the parade was Stirrup some Fun and, with the help of Maurice Bush and Jim Sutherland, we made a huge stirrup to fit in the trailer, then we played the Virginia Reel and had young people dance through the stirrup. We threw out lots of candy and all had a good time. Fair time found the Cowbelles running their booth, selling barbeque beef sandwiches and lots of iced tea. This is one of our major money making projects. The Cowbelles will donate $100 toward the Breeding Heifer award. This award went to Zayne Cooper and the Breeding Ewe award went to Elizabeth Voss. The Supreme Beef award went to Daniel Casdorph and we donated $50 and a specially designed sweatshirt. The Gorgeous Gals (a surviving cancer group in Worland) held a banquet earlier and the Cowbelles donated $100 toward the meat for the banquet. 4-H Achievement Night is November 9 and the Cowbelles will supply the meat and the buns. Fall work is in progress with lots of cow work involved. Next it will be feeding cows every day. Hope you all have a good winter. Submitted by Kathy Bush and Martha Sutherland Weston County Cow-Belles In June Weston County CowBelles celebrated Beef for Father s Day with our essay contest for fourth grade students. The Grand prize winner and the winners from each of the other three classrooms were honored by having their essays about their fathers printed in the Newcastle News Letter Journal. This gives us an opportunity to advertise Beef for Father s Day in the paper. The Grand prize winner and his father are awarded a beef meal at a local restaurant. In July CowBelles, guests and families enjoyed a summer picnic in the local park. The picnic is held on the regular meeting day (Tuesday) at noon but everyone seems to enjoy the break from the usual ranch work! In August, Weston County CowBelles helped out the Weston County Fair by awarding fair prizes. We present a monetary

7 PAGE 7 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN November 2017 COUNTY HAPPENINGS prize for the best first or second year beef exhibit (it can be either a market or breeding animal.) We also give the award for the champion leathercraft exhibit in 4-H and for the 4-H photographer who has the photo that best depicts life with cattle. We also give a monetary award for the Open Class photographer whose photo best depicts life with cattle. The photo contest encourages more entries in the ranch life division. The adult winner cannot be a current member of the Weston County CowBelles. The CowBelles continue to serve the beef barbecue that precedes the Youth Livestock Sale. Our members (old and young) enjoy greeting all of the people who attend from town and country. In September we served lunch to the FFA members and adult presenters at the annual Ag Day for fourth grade students from Upton and Newcastle. The Newcastle and Upton FFA chapter members organize and present many of the sessions. The Conservation District and the UW Extension office are always presenters also. Other adults and organizations take turns presenting educational sessions. In October our group made plans to participate in an auction of wildlife mounts. The owners invited groups to join the fun by selling items and advertising our organizations. CowBelles will sell cookbooks and note cards. - Submitted by Nancy Darnell Agriculture is more than a Business... It s a way of life.
