I m loving the fact that there will Wed., June 1 10 a.m. Railroad Room Hilton Garden Inn Laramie Held in conjunction with the Wyoming Cattle Industry Convention & Trade Show June 1-4 Questions or input? Contact President Janet Givens at: grammafarm@icloud.com be grass, but I m pretty tired of packing the mud around on my feet. Patience, patience, patience. Wyoming CattleWomen had a very good turnout for our spring meeting. We met for lunch at the Fire Janet Givens Rock Steakhouse in Casper on April 2. Jim Magagna and Haley Lockwood from WSGA and Wyoming Livestock Board Director Steve True were our guests. Haley gave an interesting presentation on the young ranchers group that is being started. Jim shared some tidbits of the upcoming Summer Convention. Director True is working diligently to get the word out about how to address the issue of rustling and/or misplaced livestock. There is a problem and it needs to be addressed. He presented several ideas on how to prevent or eliminate the situations. If anyone has an interest in having him attend any of their meetings, please feel free to contact him in Cheyenne. Several Wyoming CattleWomen were able to attend the Region V meetings recently held in Washington. We hope that the meetings were successful and informative. Gwen Geis from Gillette has been recently elected as the national Vice President for ANCW. Wyoming will be well represented and we are proud of Gwen for stepping up for our industry. Thank you Gwen! We look forward to seeing all of you in June during the WSGA Summer Convention. CattleWomen will be meeting on June 1 at 10 a.m. The Convention is in Laramie at the Hilton Garden Inn. We hope you will be able to join us there. Til we meet again, Work Hard, Live the Life, and Wear a Cowboy Hat! - Janet Givens, WCW President FEATURED COUNTY: Niobrara CattleWomen Provide Beef to Local Schools N iobrara County CattleWomen have begun a new venture. They have teamed up with local ranchers and the Niobrara County School District to provide local beef to area schools. This is the first year that Niobrara County School District trustees have supported the lunch program with strictly district funds without taking any federal assistance. This move has proved to be very beneficial since strict federal guidelines do not have to be followed. The Food Service Director has noticed a huge increase in the amount of lunches purchased as well as substantially less waste. Last fall, local ranchers Loren and Robyn Heth donated a beef to the school lunch program in Niobrara County. Word CONTACT US: spread quickly about how much the kids enjoyed the tasty beef. Soon other area ranchers stepped forward to donate beef. Niobrara County CattleWomen realized how important it was to keep the program going. Consequently they decided to coordinate the efforts to make sure there was always local beef available for the lunchroom. We had several of the kids ask last year if we were using mystery meat and I had a hard time convincing them it was indeed beef, but this year they don t even question it. They simply KNOW it s real and it s delicious, said Food Service Director Judy Lucas. NIOBRARA CONTINUED ON PAGE GRAMMAFARM@ICLOUD.COM

We are making a quilt to commemorate this milestone and it will be displayed through the summer and raffle tickets sold. We are also having Eat Beef signs made by the Snowy Range FFA members as our cornerstone project for the year. A Beef Tasting Gala, reminiscent of our old-fashioned Beef Tasting Bee held in the 80s, will be June 4 at The Cavalryman Steak House. The Laramie Jubilee Days Board of Directors has invited our 18 charter members to be the Grand Marshalls in the parade on July 9. The theme is Unsung Heroes and we are looking forward to honoring our hero members, many of whom are still very active in our organization. Our Ranch Tour will be July 16 and will highlight some of our charter member s ranches. The first stop will be at the Page Angus Ranch. Margaret Page was our first president and her father, Bob Burns, started the Ranch Tours in In September we are planning a Big Barn Dance to cap off the year s festivities. It will be a potluck dinner and will include a Kid s Rodeo! Our Ag Expo was a great success again this year. Kudos to Betty Wortman and Mary Louise Wood and their amazing team. Campbell County CattleWomen Lindsay Wood telling students about Beef Byproducts at the Campbell County Ag Expo. Campbell County CattleWomen participated in our local Ag Expo this year. The Campbell County Conservation District, in conjunction with many sponsors, hosts an Ag Expo for every third grade student in the county. This year we had over 800 students and about parents/chaperones attend. Youth tour through booths hosted by everyone from the local Weed & Pest, to the Master Gardeners, and of course the Campbell County CattleWomen. This year our booth consisted of the beef life cycle. We walked the students through a makeshift working facility and took them from the Cow/Calf sector, to retail cuts of meat and by-products. We have been participating for years, but are constantly evolving our booth and think this may be a fun and impactful way to share our livelihood with a very large audience of future consumers! Jeanie Schlautmann and Georgia Barbour from our club also put on the beef focused lunch to serve the 75+ volunteers that make this event possible. Submitted by Lindsay Wood. Crook County CattleWomen Crook County Cattlewoman, Criss Crozier designed a 2-year website for Crook County CattleWomen: CattleWomen.com. If you wish to be placed on the website with events, recipes, and articles send to crookcocattlewomen@ gmail.com. Check out our Crook County Facebook Page. New Crook County Brand napkins, notecards and pens have creatively been placed in gift bundles to sell at retail outlets in Aladdin, Hulett, Sundance and Moorcroft. Members have purchased bundles to have on hand to give to hunters, livestock sales or visitors. Denise Wagner, Hannah Ista, Linda Larsen, and Roxie Dacar come forth with ideas and decorations for the gift bundles. This spring and summer we will promote beef with booths at the Crook County Health Fair and at Hulett and Sundance Farmers markets held for residents and tourists. A spring beef promotion was in Sundance Times, Moorcroft Leader and Hulett Pioneer newspapers a week before Mothers Day and will be again before Fathers Day. We are looking for a Crook County Resident baby born closest to the holiday dates who will be given a beef roast weighing the same as the baby. Crook County CattleWomen would like to give a shout out to Denice Wagner who has brought in 11 new members into our local organization. Wonderful feeling to have all these younger members with modern ideas to promote beef. Submitted by Janet Jensen.

5 PAGE 5 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN MAY 2016 COUNTY HAPPENINGS Goshen CattleWomen The Goshen CattleWomen have produced brand products that are being sold in Goshen County to help finance our efforts of promoting beef. These items include two volumes of books detailing the history of individual cattle brands of local producers, tote bags, and napkins. Both the tote bags and the napkins feature the livestock brands of cattle producers in the Goshen County area. The items can be found at area merchants including Newman Realty and Farm Girls Boutique in Torrington. With the funds generated by the sale of these products the Goshen CattleWomen are able to make contributions to our community including funding an agricultural scholarship at Eastern Wyoming College, awards for the beef shows at the Goshen County Fair, and an annual subscription of the Western Livestock Roundup for the Goshen County Library. On May 6, the Goshen CattleWomen installed their new officers for : President, Laurie Befus; Vice President, Donna Cay Heinz; Secretary: Erin Hager; Parliamentarian: Donna Beth Downer; Auditor: Aletha Garson; and Historian, Jenny Conrad. Nearly 350 meals were served and those who ate complimented what a nice meal it was. This is another opportunity to get out the word about our beef industry. Submitted by Janet Givens. Laramie Peak CattleWomen Our annual banquet was well-attended in December. A very deserving individual was bestowed with the title of 2015 Ranch Woman of the Year. Lindy Schroeder is a lifetime resident of Platte Co. Other than her years at UW, ranching has been her entire life. She s as comfortable on horseback as she is in the kitchen. Lindy, who is actively involved with Local and State CattleWomen, also supports ANCW. More than 183 ranchers were in the food line when we served the noon meal at the Reyes Bull Sale the end of Feb. This effort by the LPCW members successfully pads our bank account for future promotions. Our current project is installing 4 ft. x 8 ft. metal laser-cut signs that introduce travelers on I-25 coming in from the north or south direction to Platte Co. as Beef Country. The signs are finished so President Jan Hyche (R) indroducing we are now coordinating a time to put Woman of the Year for Platte County. Lindy Schroeder (L) as the 2015 Ranch them in place. LPCW has yet to run out of things to do to promote our product of BEEF. Submitted by Donita Graves.

6 PAGE 6 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN MAY 2016 COUNTY HAPPENINGS Natrona County Cow-Belles with Greg and Dr. Jim Logan, Wyoming State Veterinarian. This new ruling will require producers to get a prescription from their veterinarian before being able to purchase medicated feed that contain certain drugs. The veterinarian will have to have a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship before writing the prescription. These prescriptions are only good for six months and can only be written for the number of animals to be treated. The veterinarian, producer and distributor will all have to keep the prescription on file, either electronically or hardcopy, for a period of two years. NO EXTRA-LABEL use of medicated feed products containing a VFD or combination of VFD drugs will be permitted. The VFD must include the statement: Use of feed containing this veterinary feed directive (VFD) drug in a manner other than as directed on labeling is not permitted. The issuing veterinarian must be licensed in the state where the animals are fed. For additional information the following web sites are available: Submitted by Suesan Parrott. BEEF IT NEWS layout by Liz Lauck Public Relations lauck.liz@hotmail.com farmpaparazzi.com REGION V UPDATE Submitted by Gwen Geis, ANCW Vice President Region V meeting was in Richland, Washington April Angela Whitlock and Gwen Geis were in attendance from Wyoming. There were 40 women from the region attending with no one being able to attend from Colorado. The social and entertainment on Thursday evening was enjoyed by all. Friday morning started off with the business meeting and state reports followed by a presentation from the Washington Beef Commission Executive Director Patti Brumbach. Her presentation was on how well we are sharing our story and listening to the consumer. She told of a panel they did last year at their convention by bringing in Millennials that didn t know what they were going to be talking about and had the producers who did not know they would be questioned by the Millennials until the last minute. The producers asked question about perception and what the Millennials were wanting from them. The producers reported that they didn t know a lot of what they were hearing. The Millennials enjoyed getting to know the producers so much they stayed and talked with the producers for a good portion of the day. What a great take away and interaction. Gwen Geis then spoke about the ANCW and what has been happening on the national level. Annual Convention was in San Diego and the new officers were installed. Ann Nogan President (PA), Penny Zimmerman President-Elect (MN), Gwen Geis Vice President (WY), and Crystal Walker Treasurer/CFO AL. The Treasurer/CFO position is new this year as per the change in the by-laws. This was done to try and keep the financial info current for the members by having a member more actively participating in the function. This is going to be an elected position for two years and will not have to move up the officer list if they choose not to. This person will chair the Ways and Means Committee and have a vote on the Executive Committee and be part of the Officer Team. The proposed name and logo changes did not pass. There is contest for a new redesigned logo happening at this time if people are interested in submitting suggestions please check the website for ANCW (ancw.org). The Collegiate Beef Advocacy program is slowly starting to come together. There have been some parameters put in place and the ANCW is looking for someone to take this on and help create a great program. Summer Conference is coming up in July in Denver and there is to be a workshop for State President-Elects. Twelve women from ANCW attended the Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C. mid-april and experienced the working of our government first hand. Also mid-april the Executive Director of ANCW resigned leaving us with no staff. This was partially due to funding as ANCW is experiencing financial difficulties. Miss Rodeo America Katherine Merck (WA) spoke on her year as Miss Rodeo and how she is carrying the message of Agriculture and trying to change the way that Miss Rodeo is perceived by the industry. The Washington State Beef Ambassador (Alexis Andrews) spoke and is going to be attending Casper College (WY) this fall on a Livestock Judging Scholarship. The day was finished with lots of visiting and networking at the Targaris Winery. Meetings were held the next morning with elections of committee people and then Dr. Joe Baker, Washington State Veterinarian, spoke and Toni Meacham, an Attorney, spoke followed by a tour of a Winery and shopping. Region V will be held in Wyoming next year and Gillette has been chosen as the site. So plan on attending in April of 2017.
