1 Volume 32 Issue 1 November 2016 Editor: Marcia Campbell BEEF IT NEWS The Newsletter of the Wyoming CattleWomen A Message From Our President Join Us! gathering for all CattleWomen and their famwyoming Fwe allilies, friends and neighbors...doesn t it seem like just did this? Time surely does fly as the cycles of CATTLEWOMEN ranch life twirl around. We are all facing different challenges depending on which part of the state we live MEETING in. There s drought, a few fires, wolves, grizzly bears, government red-tape and, of course, the markets. Oh My!! With all of this said, let s talk about something fun. The best part of this time of year is bringing in our calves and marveling at how great they look. Pregnancy checking Janet Givens tells us that our good old herd bulls have been doing their jobs. The hay is all cut, baled and stacked for the winter. The colors this fall have been absolutely beautiful in our part of the state. How about yours? There is always, always, always something to be thankful for. Count your blessings. Wyoming CattleWomen are alive and well. We had an early fall meeting to do the state audit. Thanks to the ladies who came to Casper to be on that audit committee. Our books are in outstanding order. The State Meeting in Casper was attended by the backbone group. We do so appreciate the ladies who dedicate their time to our organization. The Winter Meeting for Wyoming CattleWomen is scheduled for Dec. 5 at the Parkway Plaza in Casper. The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in the Railroad Room and will conclude in time for folks to participate in the sessions that will signal the beginning of the Wyoming Stock Growers meetings. 2 PAGE 2 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN NOVEMBER 2016 PRESIDENT CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 in a state effort to put together a Christmas tub for the WSGA Auction, we d love to have you contribute an elegant, beautiful Christmas decoration (no white elephant items, please). We have a big, red mineral tub that will be the container and have so far gotten a Christmas tree skirt, a large box of tree ornaments and a welcome mat. Lander Valley CattleWomen contributed cash to purchase whatever we need to put in the tub. So, if you can play please let me know and we ll make arrangements to get your contribution gathered up. We ll need your items in Casper during our Dec. 5 meeting. Remember that the WCW get a percentage of the total auction so the more we contribute, the more we get for our coffers. Please plan to join us in Casper for our Winter Meeting. We will be so happy to see all of you. It s fun to renew our friendships and to visit and catch up. Invite your neighbors, drag your sister or aunt along and we ll see you in Casper. 4 PAGE 4 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN NOVEMBER 2016 COUNTY HAPPENINGS Albany County CattleWomen commemorated their 50th Anniversary by raffling this beautiful quilt. Albany County CattleWomen Beef was at the forefront of everyone s mind this summer and fall as the Albany County CattleWomen featured ribeye steak, sirloin steak, barbecued beef, hamburger sliders, sloppy joes and beef appetizers at events attended by a wide variety of people, including statewide attendees and tourists from all over the nation. This was our 35 th summer of Ranch Cook Outs and the great tradition continued with a good meal featuring beef, beautiful ranches with gracious hosts sharing the ranch s history and good music. The settings for both our Cook Outs this summer were amazing: Ruth and Ron Blake s ranch including wagon rides and Marge Richardson s historic Overland Trail Ranch. Daughter Thyra Page led a tour that brought the Old West to life. Our entries in the Laramie Jubilee Days Parade were so fun. Our charter members, who were the Grand Marshalls for the parade, rode on a wagon pulled by a tractor. Right behind them was our trailer where we cooked hamburger sliders with FFA and 4-H students passing them out to very appreciative parade watchers. The work involved in this was intensive; the experience was so worth it, even when the grill flamed too high and we had to put out the fire. After the Parade, we served BBQ beef sandwiches downtown to over 600 people. Our Cook Out chairs, Ruth Blake and Gayle Miech, and their team did such a great job all summer. Other events included the Ranch Tour, the Albany County Fair breakfast on Beef Day for 4-H and FFA students, cooking hamburgers at The Big Event (serving University of Wyoming students who spend that day helping the Laramie community), and serving dinner to the Wyoming Association of County Officers. Cow-Belles of the Month for May through October were Shirley Lilley, Cheryl Leach, Janet Talbott, Jill Zimmermann, Elnora Frye and Lindy Johnson. Our celebratory Big Barn Bash was held Sept. 24 at the Johnson 99 Ranch with 130 people in attendance. Representatives from the Albany County Stockgrowers, Albany County Fairgrounds Foundation, Albany County Farm Bureau, Laramie Jubilee Days Home Town Team and First Interstate Bank expressed their congratulations for our 50 year milestone and shared ways we work together to accomplish our objectives. Our thanks always to The Ranchers Band for their great music! Our goal for that day was met we wanted to honor the past and look to the future with friendship and shared ideals. Cody Country CattleWomen The Cody Country CattleWomen awarded three scholarships to graduating seniors from Cody High School. Jordan E. Sauers and Brooke L. Gordon each received a $ scholarship. Emily R. Woolley received the Ras & Pat Bales Memorial Award of $ Pat Bales was a very active and involved member of Cody CattleWomen who passed away in After taking the summer off to attend to ranching responsibilities and fairs, members resumed meetings in September. We are currently planning our activities for this year. In November, we gathered to fill boxes with goodies for Wyoming troops serving overseas. This year we sent enough for approximately 64 troops. Crook County CattleWomen Our CCCW Mission Statement is: As a group, we strive to educate the consumer, promote the consumption of quality USA beef for adequate nutrition and a healthy lifestyle and represent the Ag lifestyle as an ethical and an environmentally friendly industry. We also believe the livestock industry is of basic importance to world existence and we are honored to be part of a united group to promote the beef industry. Members helped Ag in the Classroom under the direction of WY State Chairman Teresa Brown in Hulett with our donation and assistance for 61 teachers, substitute teachers and Crook County CattleWomen tour a historic log cabin. teacher s aides from all over the state. Their mission is to present the relationship science and math have to agriculture. In July, 2016, we placed the final Crook County CattleWomen sign made by FFA in 2008 on Highway 212 entering Wyoming from SD on land donated by Tim and Linda Burch [see page 1]. We had a fun trip to Ruth Ann Collins, CCCW member, to tour a log cabin (Fish Family had lived in it in the early 1930 s). In 2010 it was torn down, logs numbered and brought to the site along Mona Road and put back together with new roof by the Amish Community in Hulett. It has been placed in detail with stoves, bed, and kitchen.

5 PAGE 5 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN NOVEMBER 2016 COUNTY HAPPENINGS Margret Ellsbury and Evelyn Heide helped with a tradition of CCCW bringing cake, ice cream and fruit to Sundance Assisted Living and Sundance Nursing Home. Members provided cookies and brand napkins for political debate at RAM center put on by Farm Bureau. Criss Neiman and Minnie Williams assisted with Cowboy Hall of Fame for Region 1. Crook County residents were honored at the Hulett Golf Course and 95 people attended. CCCW members attended and sold our brand napkins, notecards and pens gift packs. We are also selling our garden wares and hobbies in Hulett and Sundance. In October a luncheon was held with Weston County CowBelles in the USDA Forest service building with beautiful fall decorations and interesting speakers. We also held with Hulett Outreach program a Crock Pot class. Recipes of Beef were cooked in crock pots and we shared tips on nutritional value, time savings, cost savings and healthier eating. A drawing for four crock pots as well as four slow cooker cookbooks was held. Submitted by Janet Jensen Goshen County CattleWomen We lost beloved member Eleanore Jones and quote her own words about her love for CattleWomen! (Quotes from 2006 Beef It News.) Being a CattleWoman has certainly enriched my life. I joined local, state and national Cow-Belles in 1976 and it opened a whole new world. As I reflect on the many accomplishments of Wyoming CattleWomen, the first word that comes to mind is pride. She lived on their farm in Huntley and loved looking out the window watching what was going on! Her husband Chuck passed away in Being a CattleWoman not only provided a wonderful opportunity for personal growth, it allowed me to meet many, many women who truly are the salt of the earth. At the booth they sold the brand t-shirts, napkins, placemats, scarves, cookbook and quilt tickets along with having information about beef. The money from the quilt goes for the two county scholarships they give. This year the scholarships went to Darby Woffinden with Liz McGinnis alternate in Big Piney and Lauren Staten with Emmilee Eaton alternate in Pinedale. The group has a brand history book, Branded: History of Green River Valley and Hoback Basin Brands, that is for sale for Christmas. It costs $35 for nearly 300 researched brands from Sublette County and the LaBarge-Fontenelle area. A fabric grocery tote bag has been made that has brands on one side and the cuts of beef on the other side for $8. They will be selling all the items with the information about beef available at all the local Christmas craft fairs. For more information on any of the events, go to or the Green River Valley CowBelles/CattleWomen facebook page. Submitted by Jonita Sommers Johnson County Cow-Belles Virginia McBride, our last surviving charter member of Cow-Belles, passed away August 16. The first organizational meeting of Cow-Belles was held May 20, Mrs. Frank Long (Kate) was the first president and Mrs. Kelly McBride (Virginia) was elected the first secretary-treasurer. Submitted by Jenna Foss Laramie County Cow-Belles Green River Valley Cow-Belles/CattleWomen In the early spring, the Green River Valley CowBelles/CattleWomen served the meal for the Sublette County Soil Conservations workshop on filling out grazing permit applications for federal lands in Pinedale and Big Piney along with having their booth set up. During the Sublette County Fair, the CowBelles had their booth along with a booth Fabric grocery tote bags offered by selling their renowned Philly Cheese Steak the Green River Valley CowBelles/ CattleWomen. Sandwiches on Friday. The Laramie County CattleWomen teach nearly 1,000 area 4th graders about agriculture at their Ag Expo. The Laramie County CowBelles hosted their annual Ag Expo Sept.13 and 14 with over 1,000 4th graders from Laramie County in attendance at the Archer Complex. With booths ranging from water conservation to honey bees to learning to rope, the 4th graders learned about a wide range of agriculture. They also learned about milking cows, stages of wheat from seed to flour, animal byproducts, and the amount of sugar in various foods. Also included was an animal exhibit where the students learned about animal safety and a tractor exhibit. A highlight of the day was watching working cattle dogs herd steers into a trailer. If you are interested in learning more

6 PAGE 6 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN NOVEMBER 2016 about the Laramie County CowBelles or attending a meeting, please contact Carole Goertz at Laramie Peak CattleWomen After a lovely Fall, the Laramie Peak CattleWomen are waiting for winter to find us. Moisture would be very welcome in any form that would bless us. Since our last connection, the group has had its usual summer. We invited the local Stock Growers (mostly our spouses) to join us for our annual potluck supper in May and picnic in July. We were fortunate that Steve True, the new director for the Wyo. Livestock Board, was able to schedule a very informative evening on the prevalence of cattle rustling and the ranchers options in protecting themselves from loss. The July picnic is our final organizational meeting outlining our duties during the local fair. Our Ag Expo, organized by Liz Lauck, was definitely a success. We re lucky in that our school district has three outstanding FFA chapters. Normally, they act as group leaders of the 3rd & 4th graders, as they tour the learning stations, but this year their memberships wanted to present demonstrations as well. This gave LPCW a wider variety of topics for teaching purposes, but also gave the FFA students the opportunity for public speaking and doing community service. Our major accomplishment was getting two laser cut metal signs made that are in place on I-25 on the north and south ends of Platte Co. [see page 1]. The Glendo FFA designed, built and erected them for us. There s still some tweaking left to be done to lessen the havoc our wind is playing on them, but this should soon be rectified. President Jan Hyche will be relaying information on the upcoming banquet as details become available. And, so ends another year. See you at Convention! - Submitted by Donita Graves Natrona County Cow-Belles We had a dream come true! Our four highway signs [see page 1] were placed along I-25 North, I-25 South, 220 and These are the four main routes into Natrona County. Katrena Crimm ramrodded this project and several volunteers and sponsors helped. Joey Sullivan of 4-J Welding designed and plasma cut the sign and WY Recycling and Keith Robinett donated steel. Kevin Forgey, Kem Nicolaysen, Pathfinder Ranch and Rob and Leslie Hendry allowed us to place the signs on their private property. By placing brands around the borders of the signs, we were able to raise funds for our Billie Jean Beaton Memorial Scholarship. Our expo is mid-november in Casper for three days. Mary Owens and Leslie Hendry have organized the event for all 25 years we have been educating third graders. Congratulations to COUNTY HAPPENINGS them! Our group has one booth about the tools of ranching We also prepared an educational booklet for the teachers for the 25 th. Submitted by Marcia Campbell Sheridan County CattleWomen The Sheridan County CattleWomen have had a busy fall. We served the buyer s dinner for the 4-H and FFA Market Animal Sale on August 8. This was a well attended event and we served around 400 people. Another event that occurs in the fall is the Ag Expo. The fourth graders from the school district come and spend time and experience 16 different stations where they learn about different aspects of agriculture and wildlife. One station had a table with different parts of offal from recently harvested animals. The students wear plastic disposable gloves and get to feel the various animal parts. There was a wool carding, spinning and yarn making station, a milking and butter churning station, the water conservation had a station where the students learned about the importance and uses of water. Beef by-products were discussed, they watched a farrier shape shoes for horses, played memory games and watched a veterinary surgery video. We had a station that showed an experiment on osmosis of the egg shell, students got to see and feel various farm animals, they experienced being in a cattle pot, the Game and Fish brought some animal mounts and several pelts and they learned to identify the animals. There were also talks from the U.S. Forest Service and the local Dog and Cat Shelter. We had election of officers at our last meeting and our new officers are as follows: President---Penny Perry, Vice President---Linda Cummings, Treasurer---Sue Martin, Secretary---Loretta Tschirgi. Submitted by Linda Cummings The Sheridan County CattleWomen serve the buyers dinner for the 4-H & FFA Market Animal Sale. Washakie County Cow-Belles The Washakie County Fair was held the first week in August and the CowBelles had their booth in the food court. Barbeque beef sandwiches were served for lunches and evening meals for the six days of the fair. It was pretty warm this year and our iced tea was a big hit. The CowBelles Washakie County CowBelles Kathy Bush, Martha Sutherland and Gloria Marcus serve lunch at the Nature Conservancy.

7 PAGE 7 BEEF IT NEWS - WYOMING CATTLEWOMEN NOVEMBER 2016 donated $100 for the best breeding heifer recipient. Meat was donated for the Gorgeous Gals Cancer dinner. The Washakie County Leadership Institute held a meeting at the Nature Conservancy southeast of Ten Sleep and the CowBelles provided the meal. Officers elected for the year are: Betsy DeBolt, President; Julie Robinson, Vice-President; Danyne Six, Secretary; Heidi Whitehead, Treasurer; Addie Starbuck, Historian. Upcoming events include supplying beef and rolls for the 4-H Achievement Dinner and giving out Hard Luck Awards to some Fair contestants. We wish all of you health and happiness for the coming Holiday seasons. Submitted by Kathy Bush and Martha Sutherland Speakers at a Weston County Cow- Belles luncheon. Weston County Cow-Belles Weston County CowBelles have promoted beef in several ways during the past six months. We helped the Newcastle and Upton FFA chapters host the fourth grade students for a morning full of fun activities learning about agriculture and beef. For the first time the Newcastle chapter served as the lead organization for the Ag Day. The FFA officers and members did a great job organizing and executing the event. Our main job was to serve lunch for the students and presenters. In July we held our picnic in Dow Park in Newcastle. This is an event that many members have enjoyed since attending as children in the 1960s! The picnic has been held many times in the city park just like this year s event. In August we served the Junior Livestock Barbecue to many of the fair participants, livestock sale buyers and general public. We presented fair awards to the best first or second year market beef and to the champion leathercraft award for 4-H. We also honored the adult and youth winners of our photo contest for the photograph that best depicts life with beef. In September the beautiful fall weather was enjoyed by a luncheon on the patio of a local restaurant. In October we prepared a carry-in dinner for the Crook County CattleWomen. We enjoyed sharing ideas for beef promotion and visiting with our friends from Crook County. We also donated a basket for auction for the annual Newcastle Chamber of Commerce banquet. The basket was a clothesline creation by member Sue COUNTY HAPPENINGS Kettley. The basket was filled with our cookbook, note cards and napkins plus more fabric specialties including hot toddies which are pot holders for bowls heated in the microwave, small fabric baskets and a Wyoming Cowboy table runner. Bread and soup mix rounded out the goodies. In December we will be giving food to the local Bread Office to share our agricultural bounty with those less fortunate. Submitted by Nancy Darnell REGION V UPDATE Save the date! Region V is going to be held in Gillette for all CattleWomen on May 4-6, Plans are underway for a great time. Speakers are being contacted to give us up-to-date information on what is happening and how thing are affecting us. Tours and fun are being planned. It would be great if we had some sponsors to help keep cost down. Some of the things to sponsor would be a coal mine & power plant tour, meals, cow painting, speaker s rooms and anything else that may come up. What do you get for sponsoring? Perks include your name or a banner displayed with recognition during the event and the opportunity to speak at your sponsored event and highlight your business. We are flexible. If you want something else for your sponsorship, just ask and we will see what we can do. Contact Gwen Geis for more information at or hiewe@vcn.com.
