1 Liberty County 4-H Clover Chronicle Becoming an Outdoors- Woman is a three-day weekend workshop designed for women. It is an opportunity for any female 18 years or older to learn new outdoor skills - skills not only associated with hunting and fishing, but also useful for many other outdoor pursuits. This workshop is for you if You have never tried these activities but have hoped for an opportunity to learn You are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills You already do some of these activities but would like to try your hand at some new ones You are just looking for the camaraderie of like- minded individuals. Win Cash Awards 4-H Horse Project Validation - May 1st Deadline May 1st has and continues to be the deadline for a 4 H er to validate a horse. May 1st is the absolute deadline for 4 Hers to validate a horse, which certifies that the project is owned by the 4 H er or their sibling, parent, grandparent or legal guardian. The process validates that the horse is owned and not leased or borrowed. Horses not validated on or before May 1 are ineligible for District and State 4 H Horse Shows. Each 4 H horse project validated by a 4 H er must be accompanied by a $10 fee. A form must be filled out by the 4 Her for each horse being validated. Hull-Daisetta 4-H Club Meeting night will be March 8 instead of March 1 due to TAKS testing. County Council and Volunteer Leaders Monthly Meeting will be held on Monday, March 28th, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Liberty County Extension Office in Liberty. 2 A&M's 18th annual Vet School Open House will be held Saturday, April 9, 2011! VET SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE Vet School Open House is a massive day of animal-related fun incorporating the entire veterinary complex coordinated by hundreds of vet students and undergrads for people from all over the state. We open all the doors to the college and both hospitals and let the public see exclusively behind the scenes of Texas A&M's premiere veterinary school. There are tours through both the small and large animal hospitals, many different exhibits for rescues and organizations, tons of demonstrations by all kinds of animal groups (agility dogs, trick horses, etc.) and animal exhibits galore! There's a petting zoo, a reptile room with hundreds of scaly friends, even fistulated cows! We'll also feature a Q&A panel with both vet students and the admissions committee so you know how to prepare for vet school if that's in your future. You will get to see and learn about all the different aspects of veterinary medicine and best of all, it's free! There's no registration required either, all you have to do is show up and enjoy your visit. Thousands of people visit the college for this event every year, of all ages and backgrounds, and everyone really enjoys it! There's definitely something for everyone. This year Open House will be April 9, 2011 from 9am to 4pm and we have a lot of great things planned already! As the date gets closer there will pictures, schedules, and more details posted to the website: Bring your own stuffed animal or purchase one at Open House and be a real surgeon! You'll get to enter our real surgery suite in full surgical garb and assist one of our student surgeons in Teddy Bear Surgery! ART CONTEST Would you like to be featured on the cover of the official Open House brochure guests receive at the event? The winning piece of our annual art contest will be the front cover of the brochure the following year. All pieces submitted will be on display during Open House in one of the exhibit halls. Anyone up to grade 12 is eligible to enter! Any media is accepted as long as it is clean, stable and dry. Pieces can be dropped off or mailed to the Vet School Dean's Office between March 1 and April 5, Please clearly include your name, school, grade level and address on every piece of art submitted! 3 All Activities are Free Calling all 9th-12th graders AG4U Visit the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, to experience AG4U an action-packed, fun filled day that spotlights the importance of the agriculture industry in our daily lives. The capstone event is the Ag Leadership Forum, a town hall style meeting featuring professional, educational and student leaders in the agriculture community. Open to the general public, the forum is an interactive and enlightening look into Agriculture and what it means to each of us. One of the purposes of this contest is it provides the members an opportunity to gain knowledge of the career responsibilities of a fashion designer and illustrator. Also, it develops visual communication skills. The theme for this year s story board is nature s four elements - fire, water, earth and wind. We will have a workshop to help you learn about this new contest on March 10, 2011 from 6-8 p.m. at the Chambers County Extension Office. Please RSVP by March 4th. 4 Lamar University and LIT are hosting a free Kids Kollege on May 19th in Beaumont area. Kids Kollege is project of the Southeast Texas P-16 Council and many partners. The project gives 7th and 8th grade students experiential exposure to careers in the Golden Triangle. Visit: The 4-H Veterinary Science Project is a 5-year curriculum based project with 100 lessons and 50 activities that gives youth interested in veterinary medicine opportunities to work in the field. The project is career-oriented and jobtraining so students can determine if this is a field they would like to pursue. Students who participate in this project will work with licensed veterinarians at their practice. By doing this hands on training they learn the knowledge and skills that are expected of a veterinary assistant. This will also be valuable on a resume and will help them to prepare for a professional program degree from an accredited university. This project has a set curriculum that allows youth and adults to work together to achieve success. It also allows for youth to develop an interest in veterinary medicine, human medicine and other allied health fields. A Vet Project Orientation will be held in April for Liberty County 4Hers interested. Please contact JoLynn at the Extension Office by April 1st to discuss details. 4-H has Talent How to get involved Submissions must be uploaded to YouTube (all links made public) Submissions must be appropriate for 4 H youth. A 4 H member may only participate on one team/entry. Intermediate and Senior aged 4 H members are allowed to participate in this activity Teams maybe one age category or a combination of both intermediates and seniors. An individual and/or team (max 7 members) may only submit one video. 10 finalists will be selected by a expert panel of judges. Those 10 finalists will then have the opportunity to perform on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the Tuesday night assembly in Rudder Theater at Texas A&M University. After all finalists are finished performing, the audience will have the opportunity to vote via text messaging to select their winner.
