2 SUMMER CAMP HELP NEEDED I am asking for some help for the H Youth Summer Camp for Lake & Mendocino Counties. Eric Smith has stepped down to pursue other activities in his life. We have enjoyed his enthusiasm and skills in helping to build our camp what it is today. I am attempting to fill his position as Executive Director and I can't do it without some help. We currently have two committee positions that are imperative that we get filled soon. They are: Program Director (Filling and organizing camp workshops) Head Cook (Not much sleep and not much pay, but very rewarding and have great help) If you or someone that you know would be willing to take either one of these position on please let me know. I'm also willing to answer any questions. Thank You! A New Model for County 4-H Leadership Dynamic and well-functioning leadership is so important to a vibrant 4-H community. The 4-H Youth Development Program style of leadership has not changed for several decades. This style of governing body is long overdue for a tune-up. So, it s time for a change and not a tune-up, but an over-haul. Council meetings are marked by limited attendance, difficulty in recruiting officers, and an uncertainty around authority and purpose. Often times the Council s work is on administrative and management issues budget, bylaws, and the like with little emphasis on planning and program development. And its focus is generally on 4-H clubs and not the entire 4- H program. Perhaps most importantly, young people do not often enthusiastically participate. Our 4-H program deserves a leadership structure that is engaging and empowering, one that supports leaders to envision our program s future, and set a path forward. Both San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara 4-H communities have inspiring stories of new leadership and management structures that have transformed their organizations. Staff and volunteers report new events and programs, increased membership, a rise in volunteers, greater community involvement, and an increase in revenue. And they report that energy that hard to measure intangible is abundant. Lake County will convene a 4-H Futures Task Force to set in place a new, similar leadership structure. We see the rebuilding of our leadership team as an opportunity to: Revitalize or expand the use of adult volunteers and young people as program managers. Develop an integrated and coordinated program delivery model Attract new high-performing volunteers to 4-H Engage more youth as equal partners in 4-H program development, management, and evaluation Expand 4-H s reach to touch the lives of more young people Vision all that 4-H can be in our community, and to create a plan to make it happen. Our first 4-H Futures Task Force meeting will take place in February 7 th from 3:00-5:30 p.m. If, you would like to attend the Feb 7 th meeting please contact the 4-H Office. Work will be completed by July. Know that we re moving forward, and in a very positive direction.

Can You Top This? The Centennial of 4-H in California will be celebrated in 2013 in many ways, including traditional events and special programs. Culminating the activities is the State 4-H Leaders' Forum, Nov. 8-10, 2013 in Sacramento. As part of the celebration, the SLF committee is searching for the family with the most generations involved in the 4-H program. How about yours? Another search is looking for the oldest living 4-Her. Do you know someone who was in 4-H in the early days (1930s, 40s, 50s) of 4-H? Please contact Charlean Andes at teacherc2@gmail.com for more information or to register your family or old-time 4-Her. ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR UPDATES As a young person in 4-H, have you ever wondered what the impact of 4-H is on you? As a 4-H adult volunteer, have you ever wondered what the impact of 4-H is on young people? Of course not because you live it and see it every day. All of us in 4-H see first-hand the value and beauty of the program. Not only is it fun but it helps develop healthy, happy, thriving people who make a positive difference in their communities. We want to tell this story to everyone and you can help us! We have included surveys in the 4-H Online Record Book (ORB). The surveys ask questions related to sparks (what excites and motivates youth) and goal management in addition to questions about academics, science, healthy living and citizenship. Help us document and demonstrate the value of 4-H for youth, families and their communities by taking the surveys in the ORB before February 15, 2013 or if you are an adult, by encouraging young people to take the surveys by the deadline. This will help us to continue to secure funding to support the program that we care deeply about. Survey data can also help us make this program better for youth, and make the program fit their needs. We want to make sure that 4-H is not only fun, but is helping youth find their spark, reach their goals and contribute to their community. As if that isn t enough of a reason 4-H Thrive is awarding $20 gift cards to every 4-H member that completes all SPARKS Score Questions (including the Bonus ones) and adult volunteers that complete observation tools in the 4-H Online Record Book (ORB). SPARKS Score Questions appear twice a year; you must complete both time points to be eligible for these gifts. In addition, these same individuals will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a new ipad Mini. The current SPARKS Score Questions and adult observation tools must be completed in ORB no later than February 15, 2013 to be considered. The second set will appear in ORB beginning May 1st, these must be completed by August 31, Thanks for helping us tell your story the story of 4-H! Shannon UPCOMING SHOOTING SPORTS EVENTS Shooting Sports Workshop Muzzle Loading Discipline 5 Dogs Range - Bakersfield, CA Saturday, March 23, :00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, :00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Upon successful completion of this course, 4-H leaders will be certified in the shooting sports discipline of muzzle loading. 4 Robotics Project Comes to a Close Submitted by Elliot Serena 4H Emerald Star Project Over the three day weekend, the 4H Robotics program had its last meeting. In it, the kids learned about gears and buoyancy. The first module was dealing with gears and their ratios, easily the hardest lesson so far. The teen leaders used a bicycle as an example of gears and gear ratios. With this example the kids were able to understand the concept and we moved on to creating drive trains with gears that would later power their own small cars. The small cars were made to complete one challenge; move up a ramp using a large to small gear ratio. After the car challenge, we moved on to the next module, this time dealing with buoyancy. First, the kids built a raft out of 2 pieces of tinfoil and attempted to place as many pennies on the raft as they could before it sank. After learning about the concept behind their tin rafts, they moved on to experimentation with different objects to find floaters, sinkers, and flinkers. The flinkers were the objects that didn't quite float and didn't quite sink. The group needed those flinkers for their final build, a submersible vehicle. After the subs were build, the supplies packed away, and the kids were sat down, we asked them to fill out a survey for us. The results of the survey showed that the kids enjoyed the robotics project and were very receptive to the idea of participating in the Level 3 Robotics Project next year.

Our goal is to have 4-H members produce films that feature how 4-H is impacting their community (for example, 4-H Revolution of Responsibility projects) and recording 4-H alumni and creating films featuring the "Voices of 4-H History" for the CA 4-H Centennial. The project is coordinated by the 4-H Technology Leadership Team: Hosting four-hour video production workshops around California using the National 4-H Film Making Curriculum (workshops limited to 30 people) Lending video equipment kits to counties Showcasing completed videos at the State 4-H Film Festival and on various websites Steps to Participate: 1. 6 Elements of a Strong 4-H Project The number of years a member remains in 4-H is closely related to the amount of success and interest she/he experiences in their projects. Project leaders have considerable freedom in designing their programs. For additional information on project planning pleases refer to the Project Leader Guide. The following are a few suggestions to keep in mind when developing a strong 4-H project. With the help of your Junior and Teen Leaders plan the project meeting using the 4-H Project Planning Guide. At the first project meeting, provide each family with a Project Outline which includes: project cost, requirements, goals, and beginning and ending dates. Provide all members hands-on learning and skill developing opportunities. Encourage members to set personal goals and take an active role in the project. Encourage members to give presentations and provide other opportunities for building leadership skills. As a group, plan a service learning activity or community service. Help members keep their project records up-to-date. Keeps parents informed and ask for help with specific tasks. Incorporate interesting activities, such as, guest speakers, judging events, field trips and community service projects. A strong project is a well-organized project which helps members develop new skills, learn from hands-on learning experiences, maintains interest, and includes a variety of fun activities. For additional information, resources to help plan your project contact the 4-H office or visit Additional Project planning Materials: 4-H Project Proficiency
