4 Sales Management Comments All year, the talk of the great set of cattle that were assembled at last year s Ultimate Red & Black has been a steadily offered conversation piece. And deservedly so! I can t count how many times during summer farm visits I heard, Your Red & Black sale should ve been one of the highest averaging sales of the fall with that great set of cattle that were there! Too bad for the consignors the weather was so bad. At least we know we have a lot of happy buyers, one of which is Mader Ranches who were prepared enough to buy some cattle, one of them (that was purchased from GSB), I saw being named Jr. Champion female at the Olds Show in early October. Now if we can just catch a break from wicked old Mother Nature who definitely dictated a buyer s market at last year s Red & Black. That was the most severe winter storm that I can remember in all my year s, at least since I was a pre-schooler growing up northwest of Regina! We have always been proud of the consignor group at R&B for the fact that it is the everyday man sale. We do combine some very highly visible names within the Alberta and British Columbia Simmental fraternity with many smaller herd bases, everyone being treated as an equal on site to generate an annual roster of the highest quality from the western most regions of our great country. Some year s while travelling in the summer months I sometimes get an extra special feeling towards one particular sale as to how it appears to be coming together. You guessed it, Ultimate Red & Black did it for me this year! I usually start the earliest near B.C. s West Coast and the boys from Progressive Simmentals had a set of bred heifers that would make anyone envious. Then it got better when they told me they were cutting me loose (as they usually do) to pick whatever and however many I wanted. I didn t get greedy and sorted four fantastic breds for R&B. Back in Alberta, many of us already had a preview of the Tymarc and C Bar K potentials on the ASA Tour Day, two of which have already sold at National Trust. I think we stashed the best Tymarc bred on the back shelf for this event. Staying in South Central Alberta, we have exclusivity for selling Czech Mate bred heifers in the fall of 2010 at R&B! Not to mention the excellent set of heifer calves that will accompany them. Czech Mate s Bull Spectrum ally, Yellow Rose will present two of the soggiest outcross red heifer calves you will see anywhere sired by the incredibly huge ribbed, heavy-haired Twin Chief Turbo. A half hour Northwest of Red Deer is home to the Beechinor Bros who have cattle in both sales today sorted from their 300 mama cows. Just outside of Red Deer is always the nice herd at Oh Kay Farms who have been long standing consignors and will certainly add to the bred heifer sale as always. Moving into East Central Alberta, is a cowherd numbering nearly 400 known as Skor Simmentals. Yes you ve heard of them of course and certainly ranking as one of the top cowherds in the country we are able to tap into the virtually un-tapped female side of the herd with some of their very best Red and Black breds and heifer calves. Still in this region, the South Holden prefix has affixed itself as one of those places you should just buy from because they always work out for their new owners. This remains the same. Brownfield, Alberta s Adair family carry deep cattlemen roots exclusively selling bulls only for many year s - until now. They have picked into the calender year heifers for the first time in a long time and will offer two practically designed front-enders here. In over a section of rolling native grasslands is where I had the chance to pick out the Mud Butte offering no-holds barred! Moving north we claim a very high quality string from Lake Bottom Cattle Co. that features progeny and service of their walking herdsires including and most notably the Czech Mate bred, Unique who is a former Bull Spectrum high seller. Way more North to the Peace Region of Alberta we attain the Smith s Willowdale string that includes their best breds and their best 2010 heifer calves. When I referred to one of Dale s bred heifers as a whale, he laughed and knew I meant it in the best sense of the word! Moving to the more southerly end of Alberta, we bring out the best of Strathmore area s GSB Simmentals bred heifers. Earlier on, I referred to the GSB heifer calf that sold here last year and has already started decorating her resume in the showring. Getting us closer to the Montana border are the always good finds from a helluva good guy Don Heggie that to never holds back at selection time. Glenn and Shane had the privilege to view and sort in two herds that are making waves in recent year s, SIBL Simmentals and Rattray Livestock. They both gave me very positive references on these two offerings from these two outfits. Make a point of being in Red Deer, Alberta the first Friday in December (which coincidentally used to be the annual sale date for my good friends, QAS & Anne at Bar 15), for a showcase of not only the best Red & Black Simmentals, but the top Fullblood Simmentals that hail from B.C. & Alberta.
