1 MARKET REPORT April 2015 Friday 10 th Store Market Matford Park Road, Exeter, Devon, EX2 8FD
2 674 STORES & STIRKS Auctioneers: Simon Alford Alan Webber A cracking entry for our 3rd Anniversary market here at Exeter saw a flying trade, despite the easing price of beef, with a top price of 1335 for a cracking 25 month old Charolais steer from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock. The same vendors reached 1300 a piece for a super pair of younger Charolais steers which were awarded the first prize in our show. Douglas Horton of Kingsbridge saw a pair of smart 25 month old British Blue steers at 1250 apiece and the best of Ron Moon s grand run of cattle hit 1200 for a two year old Limousin steer. Others over the 1100 mark include Peggy & Phil Keast of North Tawton ( 1160 for two year old Limousins), Russell & Alison Retter of Cotleigh ( 1145 for 27 month Aberdeen Angus), John & Jenny Squire of South Tawton ( 1140 for six British Blue steers) and Roger & John Dennis of Tedburn St Mary ( 1120 for three 25 month old Limousins). The heifer section was equally dear with the highest prices taken by Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey with grand month old Blondes at 1260 and 1200 (x4), with Russell & Alison Retter seeing 1075 apiece for a pair of good 25 month old British Blue heifers. Following closely with two smart 22 month old Limousin cross heifers for Ron Moon at Others breaking the 1000 barrier include Hubert Chugg of Stockleigh Pomeroy at 1055 for 23 month Limousin heifer, 1050 apiece for the same age and breed from Graham & Roger Davies of Uplowman and 1050 for Andrew Palk s 17 month Blonde, 1045 for the Calcraft family from Aylesbeare for 22 month Charolais. Of the younger stores, 14 month old Limousins steers fetched 1000 apiece for Caroline Runnalls of Liverton, the same price being achieved by Andrew Palk s similar aged Simmentals with five grand 12 month old Charolais steers reaching 980 for Julian Courtier of Whiddon Down. Steers Show Results Heifers 1 st Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock 1 st Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey 2 nd Ron Moon of Broadclyst 2 nd Julian Courtier of Whiddon Down 244 STIRKS Auctioneer: Simon Alford A massive entry of well over 200 young-stock included several runs of first class suckler bred sorts entered into our 3rd Anniversary special show and sale. Demand still outweighed supply with a flying trade to match. Top priced calves and winners of the award for the best pen of steers went to David Skelley senior of Ivybridge with a stunning bunch of five 10 month old Charolais steers which sold to an impressive 950 apiece. Other groups of steers with the same comments and off the same farm sold readily to 935 and 905 with ten Charolais heifers reaching 805 each. More very well bred and reared calves from Leo Bradford & family of Iddesleigh saw a pair of Limousin steers reach 935 a head whilst eight superb females of the same breeding rose to 780 each. John Vooght of Dunsford brought his usual quality types and saw his 10 month old Charolais bullocks top at 905 and quality females, which included the show winners sell to 790. British Blue stirks hit the 900 mark both for Christine Moorhouse of Doddiscombleigh and SG Brimacombe & Sons of Yeoford. Tremendous out-wintered Simmental steers averaging 10 months of age ran to 885 for Keg & Kath Hoskin of Christow as Phil Skelley of Shaugh Prior saw young Charolais bullocks to 810 and Blue cross heifers to 745 apiece. Show Results Steers 1 st David Skelley Senior 1 st John Vooght Heifers 54 BREEDING CATTLE Auctioneer: Mark Davis A useful entry of Sucklers sold to a cracking trade topping at 1620 for a 2011 born British Blue Cow who sold with her October born twin Limousin steer calves at foot from John Vooght of Dunsford. The same vendor sold strong Charolais cows to 1420 for a 2009 born cow with a February born Steer calf at foot. The dispersal of In Calf Cows due in June and July to a Pedigree Limousin on behalf of Messrs DC & PA Toms of Hittisleigh met great interest and topped at 1220 for a 2010 born Limousin x cow. Others sold to 1100 twice, 1075 & 1050 twice. A pedigree Shorthorn cow sold with her Shorthorn heifer calf at 720 for Mark Tundley of Okehampton.
3 A large entry of calves sold to a strong trade topping at 445 for an outstanding Simmental bull calf from Ron Andrew of South Brent. Charolais bulls sold to 412 for Messrs RH & MJ Hurford of Axminster who also sold a Limousin bull at 385. Other Charolais bulls to 368 & 345 for Frank Pike of Cullompton. Other Limousin bulls sold to 375 for Messrs KH Alsopp & Partners of Cadeleigh. British Blue bulls sold to 405 for Mr PC Clarke of Aylesbeare, 390 for Messrs SG Brimacombe & Sons of Yeoford, 352 for Messrs Higgin of Totnes and 350 for Messrs FM Blowey & Sons of Tavistock. Simmental Bulls sold to 375 for Maartin Burnell of Chulmleigh. Native bulls in strong demand topping at 318 for a Devon bull from Martin Paine of Cadeleigh who sold others at 252 & 240, a good run of young Devon bulls sold to 230 & 225 x 3 for Andrew & Debbie Cook of Umberleigh. Aberdeen Angus bulls sold to 302 for Messrs SG Brimacombe & Sons. Friesians a good trade topping at 175 for a British Friesian from Messrs KI Cottey of Whimple. Holsteins sold to 145, 135 & 115 for Anthony & Gill Bond & 100 for Messrs RH &MJ Hurford. Other young Friesians sold to 112 for Andrew & Debbie Cook, 110 x 2 for Messrs HH Wastenage of East Budleigh. Montbeliarde bulls sold to 200 for G Davis of Tiverton. 88 DAIRY - 11AM Auctioneers: Mark Davis & Mark Bromell A useful entry for our monthly dairy sale saw a steadier trade, but there were very few first quality heifers forward. Top of the day was 1900 for a non-pedigree heifer for Gordon Davis of Tiverton. Medium heifers sold to 1580 for Malcom Trevor-Jones of Shropshire. Only a handful of cows forward which saw the best to 1550 from G Davis of Tiverton who also sold a Swedish Red third calver at A pedigree Ayrshire heifer sold at 1450 for David Sayer of Bridgewater. The English Gold Top sale of Pedigree Jerseys saw a tremendous trade and an entry of five fresh heifers from Oliver Neagle s Hiltonbury herd of Hampshire sold to a top of 1680 for Hiltonbury Signatures Offer sired by Family Hill Avery Signature with another heifer by Hollylane Lilibets Legacy selling well at Two more heifers from the same vendor sold at 1350 apiece with the consignment including a ¾ d heifer averaging well at A bunch of fourteen Pedigree Jersey heifer calves from Messrs WE Eddy & Son s Chyanhall herd in Penzance sold to great interest at 300 apiece! Friesian heifer calves topped at 240 for G Davis with British Friesian heifer calves selling to 220 from Andrew & Debbie Cook who also sold a cracking Roan Shorthorn heifer calf well at 280. 4 1081 SHEEP - 11AM Auctioneer: Russell Steer ORPHAN LAMB A massive offering of lambs were a straight trade from the start to finish. Strong sorts to 35 (x6) for WJ & EJ Mann of Petersmarland and also for five from Derek Reddaway of Harberton who had four more at also for John Vooght of Dunsford and TH & PM Bolt of Tiverton, plenty more sorts with mediums 12 plus. Only a handful less than 10 and overall average was 18.05, back 1.45 on two weeks ago but very pleasing considering the number on offer. 243 STORE HOGGS A real shortage of numbers! But what a trade! Dorset ram hoggs to 100 and for H & M Farmers of Newton Abbot, 90 for both E Brook of Doddiscombsleigh and KG & TH Pearce of Crediton and 87 for John & Arthur Cuming of Moretonhampstead. Others to 85 for Sarah Chambers of East Allington, 81 for Peter Webber of Farway and 80 for Winston Thorne of Umberleigh. Average of is up almost GRAZING EWES A strong trade again to a top of for Robert Phipps of Exbourne, for WD Webber of Silverton, for Graham Nichols of Parracombe and 100 for Joe Emmett of Cullompton. All others but one over 60 to average overall. 658 COUPLES (254 EWES & 404 LAMB) A decent entry of couples were a very strong trade throughout. Bow YFC kicked the sale off to a flying start with their Suffolk x 4T s selling to a top of 232 for Lauren Woodman s double that was placed Reserve to C Drayton s Champion single that achieved 210. Second prize single from Edward Quick reached 198 as others sold to 190, 185 and 182 and further doubles sold to 225 for Alice Palfrey and 215 and 195. In the commercial pens, top prize went to Mark Reed of Kingsnympton with his pure Texel doubles, being the last pen to be sold, they achieved 250 ( per life). Joe Emmett of Cullompton sold his FM Zwartbles doubles well to 238 and 226 as well as a triplet at 222. Graham Ward of Iddesleigh sold his flock aged Charollais outfits to 235 (second prize in the show) 230 and 220 as well as 188 for singles. Likewise, strong outfits from David Snell of Kentisbeare sold his first prize couples at 230, another pen of doubles at 228 as well as singles at 182 and 180. Ollie Rose of Tarrsteps sold his Suffolk cross shearling twins well at 230 as both Helen Fuller of Simonsbath and Robert Phipps of Exbourne sold their best at 218 and both Jason Cane of Bishopsteignton and AP White of Farway reached 200 of theirs. Averages were helped by the improved quality to level at per outfit (up 12.28) and per life was 5.82 better than a fortnight ago. 130 PIGS 10.30AM Auctioneer: James Morrish CULL SOWS / BOARS Another very useful entry of 130 pigs saw the cull sow trade improving again with a top call of 120 for the pick of six from Andrew Freemantle, with others at 117, 112 & 106. Miss Stephens was well rewarded for making her way up from Tavistock with her trio topping at 110, matched by Richard & Vicky Gibbins of Poltimore with others from the same farm at PRIME PIGS A superb entry of 57 prime pigs saw the best up to 116 for a pen of three from Messrs Baker of Kennford who sold another at 110. Colin Gibbins of Fenny Bridges saw the best of his team of fifteen at 113 with others at 106, 105 & 104 while Richard & Vicky Gibbins saw their ten medium weights sell well to 93 (x6) and 90 (x4). Best of the native breed pigs came in from Glynn Priddis of Woodbury Salterton at STORE PIGS A good entry of 60 store pigs saw Michael Kelland of Chevithorne sell his best five to 42 with the pick of a large consignment of young weaners at 22 on behalf of Mr Chidgey of Lower Ashton.
