2 Monday 15 th May 78 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Prime Cattle to 213ppk & 1320 Barren Cows to 165ppk & 1295 Good numbers forward again and with a several top quality prime and cull stock on offer. Prime Cattle sold to an impressive high of 213ppk ( 1113) given for a tremendous Blonde heifer (25m) from Keith & Hilary Harvey of Bovey Tracey, a Blonde steer off the same farm and of a similar age also sold well at 202ppk ( 1277). More smart steers (25m) from Keith Rowell of Crockernwell saw a trio of Limousins to 198ppk and a notable 1320 whilst 201ppk was attained by both Alexander Darwall, Cornwood and Adrian Bowden of Drewsteignton with Blonde steers at (29m) and (25m) respectively. Another trailer load of well fleshed prime cattle from Rosie Fishleigh, Sourton Cross topped at 197ppk for her best Limousin heifer closely followed by RJ Macbean of Plymstock with a young Limousin steer (19m) which sold for 195ppk. Over Thirty Month prime cattle rose to 179ppk for a Limousin steer from Adrian Bowden. Barren Cows still very much in demand with high prices attracting larger numbers into the market. A young Gelbveih cow from Tom Turner of Pocombe Bridge headed the sale at a brave 165ppk whilst top price realised was a massive 1295 (141ppk) given for a huge 922kg Friesian (yes a Friesian!) from Paul Hendy of Aveton Gifford. A very decent run of barreners from Bottor Rock Farms of Hennock saw Blue s to 157ppk ( 1120) whilst their Blonde fetched 146ppk and a Limousin saw 145ppk or Jeremy Brown of Poltimore received 148ppk ( 1076) for his best Simmental, with South Devon s to 146ppk ( 1164) for Terry & Jennifer Arscott of Chagford and 141ppk ( 1109) for Dave & Karen Smith up from Littlehempston. Angus cows rose to 143ppk ( 1220) for DT & VJ Pyle of North Tawton. Forty six barren cows averaged 120ppk or 785. Just a few cull bulls on show, with a Limousin from DT & VJ Pyle reaching 119ppk and at 1030kg totalled Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers. 3 2487 SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneers: Russell Steer & Ian Caunter Lambs to & 236ppk 221 Hoggs to & 187ppk 1146 Cull Ewes to & Rams to PRIME SPRING LAMBS A near identical number to last week were a stronger trade throughout with all buyers livelier for lambs. Not many heavy lambs forward due to the strength in the light lamb trade and farmers keeping on top of picking their lambs meant heavy 48-52kg lambs reached for Suffolk s from MA May & Son of Copplestone, for a single from NJ & B Tucker of Long Drag and for Charollais from Gerald Burrough of Dunkeswell. 47kgs sold to 98 (209ppk) again for Charollais, this time from Colin Smallacombe of Bow and John Simmons of Poltimore exhibited his usual quality three quarter bred Suffolk s with a double pen of 46kgs achieving (207ppk). 45kgs sold to for both Michael Down of Payhembury and Phil & Peggy Keast of North Tawton as was achieved for both Chris Irish of Woodland and Richard Rogers of South Milton and the best of the 43kg lambs sold to 94 (219ppk) for both MA May & Son and Alan & Lisa Johns of Slapton closely followed by David Churchill of Axminster at (218ppk). 42kgs to (220ppk) again for Phil & Peggy Keast and (218ppk) again for Michael Down whilst 41kgs sold to (219ppk) for Graham Sercombe of Cheriton Bishop and (218ppk) for Ian & Sue Tall of Modbury. 40kgs were headed by Eddy Yeandle of Cheriton Fitzpaine with a classy pen at (223ppk), whilst a definite highlight of the sale was witnessing BBC Countryfile presenter Adam Henson nervously turn his hand to auctioneering and sell Richard Hartnell of Honiton s two pens of 40kg Suffolk cross lambs. The two Sale commencing at 9.30am Weight No s Fwd Top s Per P.P.K Head PRIME LAMB (+4.80) (+1.50) Average s Per P.P.K Head pens sold at 88 & (220 & 219ppk) before Adam handed back my gavel and announced he s not going to give up his day job! Well done Richard for being a good sport and helping the BBC with their filming, and everyone else who contributed, they were very grateful to film on site and the footage will be aired on Sunday 28th May. Back to business and other 40kg lambs sold at 88 (220ppk) for John Attree of Harbertonford and (219ppk) for Les Palmer of Chillington. A smashing pen of tight skinned, nicely presented 39kg lambs from Steve & Jackie Mitchell of Pennymoor raced away to 92 and a sale topping 236ppk as others sold to (225ppk) again for Chris Irish. 38kg lambs sold to (229ppk) for Texel crosses from Chris & Katie Steer of Modbury who also had 36kg Charollais crosses at (234ppk) whilst other 38kg Beltex and Rouge crosses from David Churchill made (228ppk). 37kg lambs rose to (228ppk) for Marcus Tucker of Talaton, 35kgs to 77 (220ppk) for Graham Hill of Sidmouth and 34kgs to 75 (221ppk) for Fred Janes of Moretonhampstead. SQQ was seven pence better at 211ppk. 221 PRIME HOGGS & MATURE SHEEP (+4.50) A noticeably sharper trade all round with every class keenly bid for and dearer on the week, in some cases by 8-10 per head. Overweight Charollais hoggs sold to for Gerald Burrough, for Colin Smallacombe and 87 for Clifford Dennis of North Tawton with various others at for Dr Peter Holley of Buckfastleigh and 82 for Brian Webber of Cullompton kg hoggs sold to for Roger Wills of Coffinswell, 84 for Roy Harvey & family of Harbertonford and 83 for Robert Shilston of Bovey Tracey. 44kg hoggs to (183ppk) for Chris & Katie Steer, 80 (182ppk) for Welstor Farms of Ashburton and 79 for David Churchill. Best per kilo of 187ppk was paid for 42kg hoggs making for Fred Janes closely followed by the same weight at (185ppk) for John Stanbury of Throwleigh and 41kgs topped at (182ppk) for John Reddaway of Cossick cross. 39kg Cheviot cross hoggs to 66 again for Welstor Farms of Ashburton, Steve Harris of Littlehempston achieved the same figure for 38kg hoggs (174ppk) and Heather Bond & daughters of Bovey Tracey sold 34kg Whitefaced Dartmoor s well at 56 (165ppk). Mature sheep sold to 66 for Clifford Dennis and 143ppk for Welstor Farms CULL EWES & 33 RAMS SHEEP 11 EWES 1112 RAMS 34 Another superb entry of cull ewes and rams met an overall slightly steadier trade on the week, especially for the heavier and often over fat types, whilst leaner lesser sorts still looked a good price. Ewes topped at for a pen of cracking Texels from Chamberlain Bros of Chevithorne, three vendors hit the 100 mark, firstly Steve & Rachel Lang of Plympton, secondly Gerald Burrough of Dunkeswell, both showing meated Charollais, and thirdly Bill Quick of Crediton this time for Suffolk crosses, who sold further Suffolk crosses at 99 and Russell Stevens of Crediton realised 99 on three occasions, Baker Bros of Highampton attained the same figure, Adrian & Julie Rich of Halwell showed Suffolk crosses, again hitting 99 on two occasions, whilst Alan & Lisa Johns showed powerful Suffolks which also reached 99. JT Venning and Son of Fowey attained and 98, the Westcott family of Cullompton reached 98 for Suffolk crosses with others to 97 on two occasions, whilst J Bullock of Down St Mary achieved a little less at A tremendous entry of Dorsets from Ben Mortimer of Exeter saw the best realise 84.50, with others to and 83. Mules this week topped at for John & Helen Putt of Tedburn St Mary whilst hill bred ewes reached figures into the early 50s. Rams continued on a similar vein in terms of trade with the best topping at for Baker Bros for a pair of cracking Texels, John Stanbury realised 100 with another pair, whilst a pen of seven tremendous Dorset rams from Ben Mortimer attained CH Trace of Sheepwash fetched for another large pen of Dorsets, whilst Dave Folland of Witheridge reached 94.
