2 Monday 11 th July 34 PRIME CATTLE & BARREN COWS 10.45AM Auctioneer: Simon Alford Prime cattle to 199ppk & 1290 Barren cows to 157ppk & 1045 Big difference now being seen in price of assured compared to non-assured finished cattle and barren cows Prime Cattle A much reduced entry met a continued strong trade with several better sorts in the 190 to 200ppk range. Top per kilo on the day was 199 pence, given firstly for a striking Bazadaise steer (22m) from Michael & Stephen Harvey of Hennock which realised 1290 followed by smart well covered Limousin steers and heifers (28m) from DH & SM Churchill of South Chard which also rose to 199ppk. More shapely Limousin cattle from Phillip Rowell of Crockernwell saw 195ppk or 1244 for a steer (26m) whilst 194ppk was achieved by Michael & Stephen Harvey with a Blonde heifer (26m) which totalled 1200 and Keith Rowell of Crockernwell who saw his best Charolais steer to Barren cows A young muscled Limousin cow from Gerald & Jill Vallance of Ashburton topped the section selling at a notable 157ppk or 982 whilst highest total priced barrener came from Edward Adams of Torbryan with a grand South Devon at 1045 (138ppk). Another quality South Devon from Phil Rogers of Newton Ferrers ran to 135ppk ( 871) with Charolais cows to 116ppk and 914 for William Bromell of Chagford, best dairy types to 110ppk and 871 for Graham Thompson of Diptford. A tremendous 920kg Limousin cull bull from John Robinson of Cruwys Morchard reached 124ppk and a respectable Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction in advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers. 3 1880 PRIME SHEEP 9.30AM Auctioneers: Russell Steer & Ian Caunter Lambs rise for the fourth week in a row! Selling to 105 and 215ppk, SQQ 196ppk Cull Sheep sold to PRIME SPRING LAMBS A mixed entry met a flying trade that saw lambs getting dearer as the sale went on, with the majority of even ordinary 43kg+ lambs in the second half of the sale trading at 2 per kilo. A couple of lots of overweight Rams topped the sale at 105 & 100 for Bill Quick of Crediton, who also sold a classy pen of 48kgs at 99 (206ppk), while neighbours Russell & John Stevens sold a single 49kg lamb at (200ppk). Some cracking 47kg lambs sold to (207ppk) for David & Mary Stark, for Francis Brewer of Silverton, for Andrew Walter-Symons of Churchstow and 92 for Michael Vooght of Hennock. 46kgs sold to (210ppk) for twelve smashing Charollais lambs from Mark Harvey of Slapton, who also sold two further pens of 45kg Charollias at 94 (209ppk) and a large lot of eighteen excellent Texel bred lambs that weighed 44kgs and climbed to 94.50, providing the top price per kilo at 215ppk. Other quality lambs of those weights saw 46kgs at 94 (204ppk) and 45kgs to 93 (207ppk) both for R Brayley of Jacobstowe, 45kgs to Weight Sale commencing at 9.30am Top s Per P.P.K Head PRIME LAMBS Average s Per P.P.K Head (206ppk) again for David & Mary Stark while further pens of 44kgs sold to (213ppk) for Derek Arnold of Morchard Road and 92 (209ppk) for DJ & SJ Mills of Lapford. Best of the 43kgs were headed by Richard Yabsley of Dartmouth at (210ppk) closely followed Derek Arnold at 90 (209ppk), a price matched by best of the 42kgs (214ppk), being Beltex crosses from Andy & Wendy Reed of Blackborough. Other 42kgs at 87 (207ppk) for Keith Rowell of Crockernwell and (206ppk) for J Sanders-Carr of Kentisbeare. Lighter weight lambs generally just under the 200ppk mark, as buyers are stronger on heavier, better killing out lambs. That said, an outstanding pen of 40kgs from Russell & John Stevens of Crediton achieved (214ppk) and the same vendors sold a smart pen of 39kg lambs at 80 (205ppk). More 39kgs at (203ppk) for Alan Bickley of Puddington with his fresh Dorset s, (202ppk) for Jeremy & Jenny Brown of Poltimore and (199ppk) for Roger & John Dennis of Tedburn St Mary. 38kgs to (195ppk) for Phil Squire of Holbeton and 37kgs to 74 (200ppk) for MJ & CE Greenslade of Blackborough. A considerable drop in the numbers forward after last week s colossal entry met a near identical trade throughout. Similar words regarding the best-selling types, with fat remaining hard work whereas leaner sorts continuing to tick the boxes. Top draw Charollais ewes from Ben Watts of Ashburton hit 99, Suffolk s from James Heard of Okehampton attained 97.50, Hannah Palfrey of Yeoford realised 97, with Paul Bowden of Drewsteignton achieving the same figure. Douglas Horton of Kingsbridge hit 96, both Lyn Loosemore of Yeoford and David Chapple of Tiverton reached 95 whilst Eric Palmer of Thurlestone and John Searle of Crediton realised 94. A large proportion of Mules forward with the best topping at for Les Barons of Diptford. A short entry of Rams met an improved trade topping at 115 for Lyn Loosemore, Alan Boorman of Trusham showed two cracking Suffolk s hitting 110, Bill Quick of North Tawton topped at 108 as did Steve Pitts of Germansweek. Reg Nicholls of Berry Pomeroy reached and Eric Palmer realised 100. All in the 638 ewes averaged down 4.50 on the week.
